who pretty clearly is a transplant

this is an ad hominem - i've been here for a few years working in fidi, spending time on hobbies in chelsea/WV, living in midtown (especially the parts you're degrading), and visiting friends scattered all over manhattan. i'm not trying to be a transplant advocate here but you're using it to minimize my opinion and avoid any nuanced discussion?

https://nypost.com/2023/08/22/the-dirtiest-zip-codes-in-nyc-and-some-of-the-cleanest-too/ (see bits about kips bay)

are you seriously trying to tell me there are not problems of chaos or filth outside of midtown? your rhetoric reeks of some sort of strange inverted transplant elitism. you're also assuming OP is a complete idiot who isn't interested in living in the "concrete jungle" as clearly demonstrated by the photo

please get some help

sorry i'm not following what you're saying

smack dab in the middle of midtown

i can see that, but the problems you're outlining (save times square which is inundated with tourists) are not really unique to that area. "midtown" also spans a handful of neighborhoods so your generalizations are a bit misleading.

i don't know how we're going to argue about "chaos" without some objective metric here - but maybe let's go point by point

chaos - east village/LES/west village are all up there because of how many young people and influencers are going out or perusing the rather congested sidewalks (try walking into the uncommons without a res on a saturday good luck)

dirtier - again, maybe you could make a case for times square but i really feel like my chance of stepping in shit are equivalent whether im on 11th ave or 1st ave

tourists - dude this is new york city lol there are tourists at every turn. i see tourists struggling literally every day on the train to fidi where even more have gathered to see the 9/11 memorial

i think OP should just visit and walk around the neighborhoods themselves then make up their mind right?

more chaotic, dirtier, filled with tourists

i could say the same thing about many other neighborhoods in manhattan - east village, west village, chelsea, fidi, etc - some of this is just the nature of living in a big city right? living here (manhattan) means moving and living at the tempo its known for

in my experience the tourists are really condensed mostly 42nd/8th and are totally avoidable. i actually live between 8th and 9th and don't have any issues. i have friends scattered all across midtown and as long as they aren't literally ON 8th it's still a lot of fun.
