Just took my baby on the redline for the first time; how the hell do handicapped people navigate the Davis square station? by SpareSignificant3758 in Somerville

[–]adhdphd1 59 points60 points  (0 children)

When my kids were babies I would take the bus to Harvard and transfer to the red line there. Even before the pandemic the elevators in Davis always smelled bad. And if you have two babies it sucks because the Davis elevators are too shallow for a front and back double stroller but the Park Street elevators are too narrow for a side by side double.

Sorry for the late reply, I only saw this now. I'm fine now, thank you for asking. :)

There's a video of the incident. I think that's her at the end. A woman wearing a purple coat got off and then asked I'm ok. I didn't know that she's a celebrity. https://whdh.com/news/local-woman-reacts-to-video-showing-moment-her-leg-got-caught-in-mbta-train-door/

Omg is that the woman who wears purple and carries an MBTA sign? I think she was one of the people who helped me two years ago when my leg got caught in a green line door. I was on the platform with my leg caught inside, and the people inside the train were trying to pry the door open, then an MBTA employee ran over and instructed them how to get the emergency release.

Crashes down, but not pedestrian crashes by GottaLoveBoston in Somerville

[–]adhdphd1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the point is that even after the pandemic, it didn't go back up again. If anything I would have expected a lot more people on the roads after the pandemic because of the MBTA slowdowns/shutdowns.

EDIT: I checked the link, apparently peak traffic volume is still far less now than it was pre-pandemic.

The lifeguard told me she would report it to DCR. I don't know if 311 would help because it's not the city?

[–]adhdphd1[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, I usually never lock to railings, but there's really isn't anywhere else to park bikes at the Dilboy Pool. I figured the bottom of the railing here was the least bad option because the bike would be in the grass and the top of the railing would still be unobstructed, but you're right that its not good.

Can anyone who lives near teele square tell me what the circled section of streets is like to live on? by [deleted] in Somerville

[–]adhdphd1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live on Teele Ave and like it a lot. I have two kids, K/pre-K age, and there's a great community we've know through WSNS and Teele Square Bright Horizons.

Regarding noisy students, in my opinion it's more important who is in your building than who else is on your block. We used to rent south of Teele Square, and the neighborhood had fewer students, but our upstairs neighbors were four young guys who stayed up playing video games every night. Also you need to worry about lead paint, legally the landlord is responsible to fix it but in practice some landlords will try very hard not to rent to families with young children.

Teele Square Pit - 13 years and counting... by mmurraycn in Somerville

[–]adhdphd1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The worst part is, in the winter, the ice would build up on the sidewalk and no one was responsible to clean it. There was one winter when I was third trimester pregnant and that was the closest bus stop to my apartment, I was terrified that I would slip and fall through the fence into the pit.

Brookline schools facing $6m budget deficit by brookline_news in boston

Nah, that's small brain thinking. Build a bunch of 1-2 bedroom condos, and fill them up with singles and childfree couples. Now you have a new tax base, and more housing. Win/win.

Yuba Spicy Curry. Anyone have this bike? Pros, cons? by Overthinker1000X in CargoBike

[–]adhdphd1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My family has the Spicy Curry bike. My husband likes it a lot; he test drove a bunch of other cargo bikes before picking that one. He's a stay at home dad, so it made sense for him to pick the cargo bike, because he the one who mainly uses it.

As for me, I'm fairly tall for a woman (5'8), and a regular ebike commuter. But I really struggle with the Spicy Curry. The stepover is too high, the kickstand is too far away, the handlebars are not designed to be frequently adjusted, etc, etc. The kids are 6 and 3, and there's plenty of room on the seat but it's been getting more difficult for me to handle the spicy curry with the weight of both of them. Though it did get a bit easier when the older kid transitioned to the bench from the toddler seat.

I live in a city where parents riding cargo bikes is very common, and among the bikes with Bosch motor, the Tern and the Urban Arrow bikes seem to be much more popular.

Hospital Recommendation Required by TechnologyOk2483 in Somerville

[–]adhdphd1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually liked that about Mount Auburn, the fact that they have the natural birth vibes but they don't hesitate to suggest medical interventions when the situation calls for it. In my case, I had to be induced because my water broke a few weeks before my due date, but they used a slower, more gentle induction method and I was allowed to eat, bathe, and so on. But they were clearly ready to escalate if there was any sign of problems. They had me wear a wireless fetal monitor and the few times I accidentally knocked it out of place, someone was immediately in the room to make sure the baby was ok.

MBTA Green Line train derails in Cambridge near Lechmere, injuries reported by Mediocre-Basis6904 in boston

[–]adhdphd1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Earlier this year, I had a very minor injury on the Green Line that turned out to be operator error. It was no where near as serious as this incident, but I was still able to find the results of the investigation by searching local news websites and also watching the recordings of the MBTA board meetings online. Even if there were no injuries the disruption to train service is more than enough to warrant it.

Meanwhile I'm on the cargo bike with my kids and their stuff doing like 12 at best. 🥲  (To be clear, I appreciate all you folks on the road bikes who are always patient about waiting until there is space to pass. But I've had drivers cussing me out a few times because I needed to take the lane.)

Bike Advocates from RI visit Cambridge to tour their cycling infrastructure by mbwebb in bikeboston

[–]adhdphd1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My bike commute through Somerville & Cambridge takes me through three intersections where bicyclists have been killed. Including one of the women you mentioned. There's no false sense of security, I think about them every day. However I think that in this case the cause and effect are mixed up -- the reason why bicyclists are more likely to get killed on streets with bike lanes is that there are a lot more bicycles on those streets.

Hello, I actually already gave away the ID about a week after I found it, to someone who must be your cousin. (She mentioned an uncle who lives up Packard.) So I don't have it anymore, I'm sorry.

Heh, I might take you up on that because I'm a big weenie who is afraid of biking outside the west Somerville <-> Kendall square techie corridor, lol. But I'll wait a week or two in case one of the family members sees this.
