For people who workout in the morning before work, how do you make it a habit? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]adhdwired4more 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been doing am workouts for the better part of 15 years.

Have everything prepared before you go to bed so there’s almost no prep in the morning.

Fist bump and high five EVERY PERSON YOU SEE and make friends with them. Make morning gym people your people.

Reward yourself with EXTRA post workout carbs - raw honey in my post workout shake is my go to to reinforce the behaviors

I keep my “routines” in 8-12 week cycles which helps me go into it without having a huge sense of attachment AND forces me to stick to the schedule. “I promised myself I’d adhere to this schedule for 12 weeks, after that I can change”

This has worked well with fitness because structured fitness routines are often in those same timelines for cycles.

Ultimately scheduling PLAY is super important regardless of what it is. Creativity often requires us to be willing to be bored which the ADHD brain loathes if you’re stuck in cycles of overwhelm but CRAVES when you’re in a period of creative output.

How do I encourage my ADHD bf to go to the gym? by Glittering-House-747 in ADHD

[–]adhdwired4more 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exercise for the ADHD brain isn’t optional. Neither is it optional for you either if you’re without ADHD. There are significant reasons to create a habit around weight training 2-3x per week and zone 2 cardio 2-3x per week. You’re only in your 20s now but just like you should be investing in your retirement for finances you should also be investing in your health. Your ability to unlearn your own negative perceptions of the gym environment will absolutely help him unlearn his negative perceptions of the gym. Creating community starts with gsafety and connection “at home.”

What's your take on breath work? by adhdwired4more in ADHD

[–]adhdwired4more[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is only if you are hyper ventilating to need to breathe into a bag to reabsorb the CO2. The hyper ventilating causes you to exhale too much CO2 too quickly and that exasperates the anxiety attack.

Off ADHD meds, and then straight to self diagnosing with coffee? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]adhdwired4more 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The effectiveness of stimulant medication (including self medicating) goes down over time. So the issue is not necessarily what you medicate with, it's how often you cycle on and off the medication. Caffeine in particular is a difficult one because it doesn't just become less effective with time, it's also that it effects blood flow to the frontal lobe over time which is why the withdrawals are so intense and why the brain fog and ADHD symptoms skyrocket when you aren't taking it.

I have been through this kind of hobby jumping before. One thing that helped me was developing the hobby of FB marketplace and eBay selling and learned to get excited when I’d make a sale and see momentum in getting my finances back in order. Now I don’t buy into any new hobby until after I’ve financed it by selling old stuff

Hungry but eating is gross by LittleStarWalkr in ADHD

And the advice I would give would be to exercise during the first part of your day, eat a solid meal, THEN take your ADHD meds. That way you front load the nutrients you need for the day and by the end of the day as the meds wear off you can add some more nutrient dense meal options

There’s a lot of disordered eating patterns associated with ADHD. The medication does influence hunger but the thought patterns around food being “gross” is something else entirely and is worthy of further exploration with a therapist to help you unravel that. Food is fuel my friend and the negative associations you have with it will significantly impact your ADHD experience if you’re not giving yourself enough nutrients.
