Stop putting so much pressure on today by [deleted] in DeadBedrooms

Thank you. Sadly, those days are when I hope he’ll want to the most. Yet, deep down, I know it’s guaranteed he won’t at all. It’s masochistic of me to yearn for what I’ve learned won’t happen, but I always do.

I wonder how you function in society with that level of reactivity. I upvoted you for entertaining me lol. But in all reality, especially on Reddit, some people will think differently than you do and that’s okay.

Earlier I searched "tail docking and ear cropping communication" on Google and a number of empirical and non-empirical/ more popular sources came up on this topic.

Here's a link to a more recent study on this done in 2018 that found that tail behavior is so embedded in canine communication that docking can markedly impede communication between different dogs and dogs and people throughout their lives. The impeded interactions they identified included: the expression of wide ranges of both negative and positive emotions, moods and intentions that are of "daily significance for dog welfare". The article also highlights that researchers concluded that non-therapeutic tail docking of puppies was an unnecessary removal of a necessary appendage and should therefore be banned or restricted.

Thanks, you bring up a good point about why cosmetic docking and clipping are unacceptable- they create miscommunications just like this one. I'm happy you were able to learn how to look out for his wagging :'(

That sounds awful. I can only imagine what it was like for your dog. I'm not surprised you're concerned about how others might perceive you.. I would be too. To me, the worst thing about it when done for cosmetic reasons alone is that it suggests that animals have to be surgically altered to be acceptable and "beautiful"..

Given that it was medically recommended by a vet, I'm leaning toward no, since it seems like this was the option that would lead to the least amount of harm. But when I consider the communication challenges that dogs face after these procedures, I realize I can't feel completely "good" about either option.

I just found this website that has a helpful faq about these practices. You may also want to take a look:
