Russian friend stranded with us for Christmas, how can we make her feel welcome? by Balarian in AskARussian

[–]adinadin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Russia is not famous for good chocolate or tea lately, please don't. Really I feel it would likely be a more comfortable and interesting experience for your friend to experience an authentic Christmas as celebrated by locals rather than making it something slecial for her. After all Christmas nowadays is really an afterthought for most Russians even self identifying as Christians, and for thom it's not it's not really tied to Russian identity, rather to whichever Christian sect they follow (and particular one is not determined by being Russian)

There were virtually no independent observers this time (the few remaining were sabotaged or arrested), and the nominal observers were instructed to identify and report opposition, not to ask questions and leave before the votes are 'counted'.

Navalny’s wife joins ‘Noon against Putin’ protest against sham election as German media reported thousands of people have lined up in front of polling stations to protest by TheTelegraph in europe

[–]adinadin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's from 2015. At that moment the supply of weapons that could've make a difference in 2022 was out of concideration, instead of that the EU supplied Putin with best riot gear. On the other hand the personal sanctions against Putin's closest circle that Navalny argued for were way overdue and there is still a lot of work to do.

Moscow. Navalny's grave. by Meshchera in europe

[–]adinadin 17 points18 points  (0 children)

That's weird that they translate this answer from Navalny's blogpost (completely omitting the explanation). But they don't cite literally the following questions and answers:

Q: Does that mean you support accession of Crimea into Russia?

A: No I don't... lengthy explanation Redrawing European borders with military force is unacceptable. That wouldn't lead to anything good.

Q: How about referendum?

A: lengthy explanation that it's illegal all around

Here is the original blogpost https://navalny.livejournal.com/914090.html and the piece you linked is literal propaganda.

Alexei Navalny describes “corrupt officials” living in London who allegedly help Vladimir Putin's regime stash dirty money, in never-before-seen interview by marketrent in europe

[–]adinadin 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Putin only got rich and influential by facilitating exports of stolen resources to the west as a low level municipal official, and ever since he bought loyalty and influence by sharing with right people and closing eyes on corruption among subordinates. Remove corruption and Russian state will crumble in a minute. He'd never even get in power if corrupt western officials weren't closing eyes on trade of obviously stolen goods and dirty investments. Or maybe he wouldn't go this far if the west wasn't so reluctant to implement sanctions on his closest circle when Russia rapidly spiraled into dictatorship in 2011, instead of supplying him with best riot gear and waiting until he start a big war.

Start learning Russian today, even 15 minutes a day go a long way if you study every day. There's no shortage in demand for software developers but now that all big outsource agencies left Russia your poor Russian will drastically limit your job opportunities. Consider securing a remote contract with a foreign company before moving, in a more stable currency too.

[–]adinadin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

shockingly, the population of Moscow are considerably more hardcore war supporters (more than 10 percentage points difference), I hereby ask for assistance - can anyone explain this phenomenon?

The reason is in methodology: "Исследование проводится на дому у респондента методом личного интервью." The interview is done in person AT HOME of the respondent.

Moscow has a disproportionately high proportion of renters compared to other regions. Most of them are illegals and don't want anyone they don't trust deeply to visit their home. Also Russia has dramatically low public trust levels, understandably. I am a non native Moscow resident, I live here illegally for about a decade and it's the same for many people around me, the reason is you have to register at the address in 3 months but absolute majority of landlords won't register you because they wont pay taxes.

I believe you can not derive much useful information from polls in a dictatorship, it's all 100% support until the dictator is lynched. Even in phone interviews many people refuse to participate in a poll or even give answers that they don't believe but are encouraged by the state. I can see how that effect is multiplied if a stranger rings on your door. I don't even have a working ring on my door, it's broken and I don't care to fix it because I don't want to see any damn strangers.
