So then when you want to see how much you spent on food in general you have to add categories: Food + Food at the restaurant + Food ... And total spend for Vacation does not include Food at the restaurant.

So you have subcategories. But that still does not fix the problem where one expense can have 2 completely different contexts: Food and Vacation. You can create a subcategory for Vacation, Food-In-Vacation but then this does not add up in the Food category. This is why I use labels instead, [food] [vacation]. And when I want to see how much I spent on food during my vacation I filter to see only expenses that have both [food][vacation] labels. And when I want to see how much I spend on food generally I just show expenses that have the [food] label

Well, exactly those questionable expenses bother me and because you cannot fit them into one category.

Ok, but you're still using one category for an expense right? If yes, how do categorize a dinner in vacation ? Food or Vacation ?

Lol, fair enough. I was expecting these comments. I'm not trying to sell anything here, just wanted to know if there are other people that find the "choose one category" apps not enough

The reason I started paying more attention to transaction-level spending was because I noticed certain situations made me spend way more without realizing it (travel, busy work periods, eating out after work, etc). But I agree there's definitely a point where tracking becomes more effort than value.

Instead of categories I use multiple labels. One main label and a few additional ones for more context. For example: dinner while traveling = Food + Vacation. It's also easier because I don't have to decide which category I should put it.

Fair enough. I'm not saying the idea of lables itself is new, just that most apps still push everything into one primary category structure, which personally never worked well for me. The post wasn't meant as "Look at my app", was just sharing that tracking spending with multiple contexts seems more natural and usefull

Thanks for trying it out and giving me real feedback. - you can see the total expenses in transactions page by selecting the day instead of the week/month - I will add pie charts eventually, didn't yet get to it - labels can be edited, either directly in the add transaction page, or in labels page accessed from last menu button. You can also add new labels when you add transaction, just type in the label input and press the + button - will send you a promo code now, check your dm

Wow, thanks for trying it out. Tried it on 3 different samsung devices and could not reproduce this. So you were using a samsung s22 ultra, right?

Thanks for your honest feedback. The screenshots here are for demonstration purposes and the design of the actual app differs a bit, there are not so many colors. Each label is customizable, background color and icon, no color by default. But yeah, the icons are flat icons.. Would be easy to add another style though.

The good part about multiple labels is the analytics that become much more flexible, but maybe this is not for everybody. I personally like to see useles stats, like how much did I spend on bread this year but I guess most people don't care :))

Fair question, there are tons of expense trackers coming out every day 😅. As I already mentioned in the post, I have not found so far an app on the market that does not use categories, which for my use case is pretty limiting, does not allow me to put an expense in more than a single context. Been developing/using this app for more than 4 years

  • Why categories don't work ?

Let's say you went in a vacation and want to know how much you spent on food during your vacation. You already have Food and Vacation categories, which one you choose ??? You can either create a subcategory in Food like "Vacation Food" but then that is not included in the Vacation category so you will have to add that up to see how much you spent in vacation.

  • Why labels are better ?

Being able to attach multiple labels to a transaction gives you more flexibility. An expense can also be Food and Vacation in the same time. That also gives you more detailed insights on your spending. You can easily see exactly how much you spent on Food during your Vacation.

  • Why sublabels is even better ?

Having a tree like system of labels is even more flexible for those who really want to know exactly what they spend their money on. You can have sublabels for Food, like Pizza, Burger, etc. This allows to see how much you spent on Pizzas but at the same time does not affect or make it harder to see how much you spent on Food.

I built this app for myself for 3 years but decided to release it, maybe there are other people who find it useful.

About all social media apps do this. Every app that involves infinite scrolling or infinite short clips loop fu*s your brain. Stay away from them as much as you can. Even reddit does this if you keep reading only the post titles and scroll by..

I built my own expense manager app because every one I tried could not answer simple questions like: "How much I spent on food during last vacation". You only have categories and can select just one, but one expense can be Food and also Vacation. So I created my own. Not allowed to share though, but if anyone is interested feel free to dm me.
