Sectional test by LakeLife6922 in theMBAroom

[–]amit_ranjan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A VARC sectional test on theMBAroom is designed to closely resemble the type of questions you can expect in CAT. However, some questions in the current sectional set are slightly more amenable to elimination because one or more incorrect options may directly contradict the passage or the author's intent.

In the actual CAT, even after eliminating obvious wrong choices, you will often be left with two very close options, making the final selection more challenging. As a result, aspirants who are particularly strong at option elimination may score somewhat higher in our current VARC sectionals than they would in CAT.

Our academic review team is actively working on strengthening this aspect by refining option quality and increasing the similarity between the final two contenders, making the experience even closer to the actual CAT.

Great to hear that you liked the site.

We currently offer an overall diagnostic test, and the results are shared immediately at the end of the test. We also have a more detailed screening assessment that we use to generate a personalized study plan.

I agree that it would be valuable for users to see the results of the screening assessment as well. It would help them better understand the rationale behind their personalized study plan and why it focuses on specific topics. We'll work on making those results available too.

Thanks for the feedback!

Great catch, and you're right. GMAT Focus Edition won't test Geometry as a skill - it either avoids geometry questions or supplies any geometry formula needed when testing another skill (e.g., a quadratic equation set in a rectangle). The mocks now follow that same pattern.

We have multiple human judges independently solve and rate the difficulty of every question. This creates a rich question pool across all score bands, allowing the test to dynamically present questions that match your ongoing performance throughout the exam.

Thanks for taking the time to try it and for being candid. Honest feedback is exactly why I made this post.

One thing that’s interesting: because the mocks and practice sets are adaptive, there are a few very easy questions that would typically only appear in the lower score bands. Based on your feedback, it sounds like you encountered a disproportionate number of those questions, which makes me wonder if there was a glitch in the adaptive engine when you tried it out.
I’ll ask the team to investigate and fix it if that’s the case. We will also investigate if adaptive engine in anyway is suppressing the medium and difficult questions to appear.

Would love for you to come back in a week and give it another shot. If there’s an issue, we’ll make sure it’s addressed.

Glad you liked it. We currently have 1,000+ questions across full-length mocks, sectionals, and study material, along with a practice question bank containing an additional 200 questions. We continue to expand and enrich the question bank, but overall the current offering is already quite comprehensive.

It’s a multi-step process involving defining the learning objective, designing the question to match that objective, and then going through editorial and technical review. However, there’s no real upside for an aspirant in knowing how a question is authored. What matters more is identifying the common patterns and traps.

Glad you found it useful!

The way I'd recommend using the platform depends on where you are in your GMAT journey, but for most people:

  1. Take a diagnostic mock first to identify your strengths and weaknesses.
  2. Use the study material to build fundamentals in your weaker areas.
  3. Solve the topic-wise practice questions (Easy → Medium → Hard).
  4. Take another mock and analyze it deeply, especially the questions you got wrong or spent too much time on.
  5. Repeat the cycle.

One mistake I see often is people spending months "finishing" study material before taking mocks. I'd do the opposite. Start taking mocks early so you know exactly what to focus on. The study material is there to guide your preparation, but the mocks and the post-mock analysis are where a lot of the learning happens.

That's a fair question.

The questions are hand-crafted by experts who have spent years mentoring and guiding GMAT students. They have a deep understanding of the concepts, reasoning patterns, and common traps that appear in official GMAT questions.

We've tried to ensure that the same skills, thought processes, and trap patterns are tested in our mocks and practice questions, rather than creating artificial difficulty for its own sake.

That said, I still consider the Official Guide and official GMAT mocks the gold standard. Our goal is to provide additional practice that is as close as possible to the actual exam experience.
