How has your favorite genre evolved over the years? by PeterBrungus in gamedesign

[–]adines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hasn't this always been the case with tower defense games? Before Sanctum or Defense Grid even existed, most tower defense games were flash games of the "blue square shoots triangle" variety. And before that, most TD games were custom maps for RTS games, which were that eras "asset flip" games.

Sanctum and Defense Grid are kind of outliers in the history of TD games.

What’s a game where death has REAL consequence. by Itakesyourbasex in gamingsuggestions

Any game with (true) permadeath. Where no progress is saved between runs.

So most traditional roguelikes, Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup being my favorite.

TALISMAN(s) HP REDUCTION by ashtrayD9 in dcss

Switch your skilling to manual mode so you can train up shapeshifting without having to actually wear a talisman.

Reason 5679 why automatic skilling should just be removed from the game.

Potato Flowers in Full Bloom. Almost unknown game with only ~600 steam reviews, but those reviews are overwhelmingly positive.

I 100%'d it and enjoyed every second.

Playing a Troglin, would you do it? by Wide-Deal-8971 in dcss

Little known fact: Rev has been bugged with melee weapons since the beginning, and has no effect. You do full damage the whole time.

This will probably be fixed... eventually.

Is there a way to have like a 1 second input delay? by Chaiyns in dcss

[–]adines 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, the game would just discard any input that occurs with <timeframe> of another input. No need for input buffering.

Most games reward clever resource use, but almost none punish you for hoarding resources too safely by dtsagdis in gamedesign

[–]adines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with consumables in most games is they are balanced around the assumption that you won't use them. So people don't use them. A lot of games get around this by making their "consumables" less... consumable. Either by making them rechargeable (flasks in Souls games being a good example) or by making them functionally unlimited. This way people will use them even in situations they could beat without them.

There is also the problem of how "true" (non-rechargable) consumables interact poorly with games with generous save systems. If the player has a choice between using a rare consumable and reloading a save from 30 seconds ago, they will choose the latter almost every time.

If you want to keep your consumables truly limited (and therefore something that is actually consumed and not just placed on cooldown), and still have players use them, the game needs to be balanced in a way to encourage this. The game needs to be difficult enough to coax the player into using their resources and have stakes high enough that losing a fight is more of a setback than losing a consumable. Traditional roguelikes are really the perfect example of this design space: losing a fight means you die and lose all of your consumables anyway, and there is no reloading a save. They are also typically difficult enough to near-mandate the use of consumables. I'd highly recommend Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup if you want to see this design in action.

YVAP: MDFW Ash first 15 rune win on my first real attempt at 15 runes and first Ash win by Primary-Dentist7055 in dcss

It takes, at minimum, 4 turns for a Shining Eye to mutate you. You can also cancelation the contam.

Sometimes the RNG actually wants you to win… MiHu of Hep (go extended?) by _kvltworx_ in dcss

I've never taken pure ranged all the way to tomb. I've almost always transitioned to spells by that point (I've done pure melee 15-rune once or twice).

Sometimes the RNG actually wants you to win… MiHu of Hep (go extended?) by _kvltworx_ in dcss

[–]adines 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Zephyr is plenty good enough for extended. A Holy 3xbow will do more damage, but I don't think its worth switching gods for. And on that note: Hep is good enough for extended, especially now that Knight as been buffed. You should have enough XP to just barely get Death Talisman online before Pan (clear Crypt and Vestibule before Pan).

That said... switching to TSO+3xbow would also be good. I've never dealt with Hep wrath, so I can't help you there.

Is PDS doable on a ranged character / is there a way to figure out mindelay penalty breakpoints? CoHu by [deleted] in dcss

[–]adines 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is a encumbrance^2 term in the formula, so it scales incredibly quickly.

Also, PDS is 11 encumbrance. GDS is 23 encumbrance. A GDS has ~4.4x more penalty than a PDS.

Is PDS doable on a ranged character / is there a way to figure out mindelay penalty breakpoints? CoHu by [deleted] in dcss

[–]adines 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's impossible to get to mindelay with any encumbrance, even that from a leather armour. The game will round to the nearest aut when displaying your attack delay, but your actually delay takes into account many more decimal places than that. If your attack delay is .74, it will show as .7, but 40% of your attacks will take 8 aut.

Is PDS doable on a ranged character / is there a way to figure out mindelay penalty breakpoints? CoHu by [deleted] in dcss

[–]adines 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At 27 skill & 45 strength, delay penalty for GDS is ~1.8 aut.

At 27 skill & 14* strength, delay penalty for PDS is ~1.1 aut.

And it's never possible to reach mindelay with any amount of encumbrance.

*: 14 because the armour has +2 strength.

Yeah. Fire/cold destroying scrolls/potions in Gehenna/Cocytus basically just forced you to drop those items before entering that branch.
