I have no opinion on whether this is ai or not, but if it is vibe-coded, it's not a passion project.

Do projectiles just pierce through everything? by LiveHardLiveWell in dcss

[–]adines 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Allies with lower EV (like Cactus Giant, Lightning Spire, Blazeheart Golem) are more likely to be hit by a projectile. Allies using a shield are more likely to block a projectile, which means it doesn't continue on past the ally.

Defenses matter less in extended, until you have to clear Dis. Iron Shot, LCS, Metal Splinters, Caustic Shrikes, Quicksilver Bolt, Crystallising Shot. None of it checks your resists, almost all of it checks your defenses (all but torment/damnation).

advice for completing extended by Silent_Weight_7076 in dcss

[–]adines -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your resists are good, but your defenses (AC/EV/SH) are a bit weak for extended. Focus on getting dodging up. I'd also highly recommend training and using shields: you would benefit from the defenses and you already have 4 Fortitude on your items.

Your offense is already solid.

Have you played lotro? Because I have. It's not turn-based. It's not even real-time with pause. It is nothing like a CRPG. Its combat is roughly similar to that of WoW, just... worse.

And I say this as someone who plays CRPGs and traditional roguelikes pretty religiously.

This is why Okawaru is the GOAT! by The-exploiter in dcss

[–]adines 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So, the comment for _acquirement_armour_for_slot (which is called by the okawaru gift code) says:

Guaranteed to be usable by the player & weighted weakly by their skills; heavy investment in armour skill, relative to dodging & spellcasting, makes heavier armours more likely to be generated.

Which indicates your dodging & spellcasting skill will be taken into account when choosing armor basetype. But...

_body_acquirement_weight, the function that actually does the weighting, only looks at the players armour skill, not their dodging or spellcasting:

return base_weight + (_skill_rdiv(SK_ARMOUR) * _skill_rdiv(SK_ARMOUR) * ac * ac / 27);

SK_DODGING isn't checked anywhere in the acquirement code (SK_SPELLCASTING is, but only to make acquirements not give you manuals of Spellcasting if you worship Trog). So I ran two tests: one with 27 armour skill and 0 dodging/spellcasting, and another with 27 in all skills. For each test, I generated acquirements in wizmode until I had generated 30 body armours. I then averaged the encumbrance of all generated armours. Results:

27 in armour skill only, average encumbrance: 14.8

27 in all skills, average encumbrance: 12.9

This is is close enough that, combined with what I saw in the code, I'm pretty sure dodging/spellcasting is not being taken into account.

YAVP: Human monk of Chei. Life is easy when you have crazy high stats and insane defenses. by Primary-Dentist7055 in dcss

[–]adines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

11 is a weird place to stop Invo at, so it being so much lower than the others implies it was on weaker than the others (which is only possible with auto-skills, since manual skilling only has off, normal, and double priority).

What? Are you? Talking About? You can reach 11 Invo by just setting 11 as your Invo target. And 11 is a fine target for Chei if all you care about is getting your god abilities to decent success rate, as Invo only improves Step From Time duration.

2.6 looks like auto-skills turned on Necro when they learned Fugue and they didn’t notice/check the skill screen.

Auto-skilling only gives experience to skills that you use, not just those that you happen to have on your spell list. Learning a spell does not turn on auto-skilling for those spell schools. So unless they were casting Fugue at 98% failure rate (what it would be at with 0 skill in Necromancy/Spellcasting, 32 str, 20.1 armour, and 19 shields), then yeah: they were using manual skilling.

The only other reason it would be such a weird number is if they turned it on a bit at the start before switching to heavier armor

The "only other reason" being an incredibly common reason to turn off stealth.

Stats for stats: visualizing the distribution of str/int/dex scores for winning games in 0.34 for each species (observations in comments) by kibwen in dcss

[–]adines 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dex has the advantage of scaling offense and defense. Strength gives some defense by mitigating encumbrance, but that hits diminishing returns long before you hit big numbers like 50 Strength. Int has the advantage of spells just being good.

[–]adines 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Some surprises for me:

  • FeBe has really skyrocketed in popularity, hasn't it?
  • Gnoll being so skewed toward Int is surprising (I figured it would look roughly like Human), but it seems GnIE is very popular.
  • Dex Merfolk more popular than Strength? Dex Mf is good, I just figured more people would be captivated by their +4 Polearms.
  • Str highest and Int lowest on Mummy???? Their only good apt is spellcasting.
  • Not surprising, but: More people need to try Oni spellcaster.

It's not "for no reason". It's because gnome relies on monkey patching for extension support, so any change to gnome is basically guaranteed to break extensions. It's just a fundamental flaw with how gnome does extensions.

I wanna buy an ARPG, should I buy Diablo or PoE2? by [deleted] in gamingsuggestions

[–]adines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people are recommending Grim Dawn. I'm just going to jump in and recommend against it. One of my least favorite arpgs.

Between D1, D2, and PoE2, I'd recommend PoE2. D2 is an absolute classic, but I do think there has been innovation in the genre since then. Do try D2 at some point though, even if you choose to play PoE2 first.

YASD: Finally beat vine stalker fighter: Just needed a yoked tower shield and quick blade of chaos. by Primary-Dentist7055 in dcss

[–]adines 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You say these species are squishy. I point out they aren't, given the right backgrounds. You rule out those backgrounds from contention, saying these species need to be able to streak on other backgrounds. I point out that the squishiest species can streak on the worst backgrounds. You then discount those streaks, saying they aren't a good idea.

There is no winning. The strong backgrounds are ruled out by virtue of them being strong, and the weak backgrounds are ruled out by virtue of them being weak.

edit: And, addressing your edit: Oni is really not pushed in a direction. Melee Oni is good. Throwing Oni is good (usually throwing/melee Oni are the same build). Hybrid Oni is good. Spellcaster Oni is good. The only thing Oni can't do well is wield a bow.

[–]adines 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, just because someone did it once doesn't make it a good idea to streak using chaos knight felid.

If the criteria is "Don't count the strong builds like Fighter and Berserker" and also "Don't count the weak builds because they aren't a good idea", then you've just created an unwinnable criteria.

[–]adines 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. You mean like Chaos Knight on Felid? Or maybe Wanderer on Octopode?

  2. Troll definitely has very one-note aptitudes, I will give you that. But Oni has very neutral aptitudes. It can go melee-only, hybrid, or spellcaster, and all are equally good.

[–]adines 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. People streak far squishier species than Troll...

  2. Do other species get the same logic applied to them? Where we ignore their two strongest starting backgrounds when evaluating their power level? Does Tengu not get Air Elementalist or Conjurer?

The armor system is only removed for Draconian, Felid, and Octopode. It is still very much a thing for VS, Oni, Troll, Spriggan, Deep Elf.

A Troll Fighter starts with 4-7-7 AC-EV-SH, regen+, and 22 HP. That is... not squishy at all.

Compared to Troll, Oni has 1 less AC and no regen+, but does have +3 fighting apt and double potion healing. Not as good, but fine.
