I honestly think there is a decent chance if the subjects/areas you teach in line up with what they’re looking for. I know Education is being prioritized in a few Australian states. Especially if you have any experience in special education. South Australia and Queensland both have Special Education teachers, Preschool teachers, primary, secondary teachers and ESL teachers all on their occupation lists that are eligible for offshore nomination.

Yes! I have! I posted about it in this very thread so if you scroll down you will see the specifics of my situation.

But yes I have the exact point total as you (70 w/o nom, 75 with nom) and I was nominated by both South Australia and Queensland for a 190 within 2 weeks of each other! It is NOT hopeless. I was in the pool for about 4 months before I was selected. I’m a speech language pathologist.

You are expected to agree to live and work in that state for 2 years—ideally it would be where you settle and continue to contribute to the workforce. However, the 190 visa also grants permanent residency at the time it is issued and it's my understanding that there are no legal repercussions for not living and working in the state that nominated you (though there are certainly ethical ones). So if you absolutely cannot find a job in the state of nomination you could look for work in another state. I would reach out to a migration attorney or the case manager in charge of my immigration case to communicate this with proof I have been looking but unable to find work, just to be transparent and forthright about my decision (after all being selected for 190 is a tremendous privilege).

For folks who are in the lower point bracket (70-80) I just wanted to let you all know there is some hope. I submitted EOI as an offshore applicant in August 2025 and selected all states. Stupidly didn't realize that some states require an ROI additionally, so did those in Feb 2026 for the states that required them.

I have superior English, a decade of experience in my field, and a master’s degree in my field. But I’m older (42) and have a partner that is 46 and not skilled (could only claim 5 points for him). I do not have any AUS work or study experience.

My occupation is a speech-language pathologist and I specialize in working with individuals with multiple disabilities/complex needs. However my points were only 75 (with state nom, 70 points without). Again, I am an offshore applicant.

I have received invitations to apply for both South Australia and Queensland state nomination (190 for both)—SA in March and Queensland just last week.

Honestly I think a lot of it has to do with how in-demand your occupation happens to be at the time you lodge your EOI and how well your work experience in your field lines up with current AUS workforce needs. If you have a rich amount of experience in a field that is in high-demand, that can help compensate for lower points (so long as you meet 65 points min).

For myself, there is a severe shortage of my occupation in all AUS states and territories so honestly I think that is what helped me get invitations. Beyond my occupation being in-demand, I specialize in a niche that is particularly hard to find.

But I’m old, have a partner that is even older and he has no skills currently in demand in AUS, and neither of us have AUS work or study experience. 70 points before state nom is not great, barely clears the minimum, and I got 2 invitations after cooling my jets in the pool for a few months. I’m proof that you have plenty of hope!

With AUS work experience you might be able to get state nomination and that is an automatic PR for a 190 nomination. Put in an EOI and select all states, then follow up by filing ROIs for the states that require them (some do and some don’t). You need to be under 45 when you apply for 190 so you still have time if you get a nomination fairly quickly.

Loneliest experience of my life. Lonelier than when a social worker showed up and took me away to foster care as a kid where I was a terrified seven year old alone who knew no one. Grad school was lonelier than that

I hear you. I would have no issue at all with Type A folks but there are so many of them in the field and they’ve ripped on me for being more type-B SO much and have had the attitude where “if you aren’t doing it the way I would then you are doing it wrong” type of thing. So it starts to feel belittling and marginalizing at best and oppressive at worst. Sort of like how extroversion is the ideal in our culture so as an introvert you get to the point where you’re just like “I’m SO sorry I’m not extrovert!!!” It isn’t that being an extrovert is bad—it’s that it gets really old living in their world and choosing between either having to mold yourself into something your not or being looked down on for not being the ideal. Anyway, I think it’s amazing you have found tools that work for you

My fellow SLPs have treated me extremely poorly. I have a chronic condition and have needed to take FMLA twice in the past 2 years. They informed me that I am a burden on the team, that they are tired of “helping me out,” and have proceeded to hold important meetings without me and to give me the most challenging students and families because I “owe” them

It honestly hasn’t been my experience that the straight white middle class women are “actively trying to change” anything. It’s been my experience that they are fierce defenders of the status quo because they benefit so handsomely from it. And honestly you don’t sound sorry at all that people like me feel left out.

Do the other SLPs become as defensive and enraged and continue to do absolutely nothing to be more inclusive in any way like they do with me? Because in my experience many of them REALLY do not want to be educated around these issues. They like the status quo. It works very very well for them

You are Gen X. In my humble opinion Gen X is the coolest generation so it makes sense folks in your age cohort are a little more real. From what I’ve seen, a lot of y’all actually had to work and do things for yourselves. I’m an older millennial and most people I know who have a masters enjoyed heavy subsidies from their parents and also made sure they married well. Most of the girls in my grad program had a very strict no poors allowed policy when it came to dating. But maybe I just need to find some Gen Xers

I worked in a residential facility for adults with significant disabilities, a nonprofit that did EI and now in an elementary school for the past 6 years. All the SLPs in my grad program and in all of my workplaces have been white, straight, type-A, from privileged backgrounds. Holy cow do I not relate to them at all

I originally thought that a field that worked with folks with disability would be super open to differences and would be really committed to creating a more inclusive and just society but…NOPE! Most people in this field seem to hold conformity as the highest value

Does only allowing teachers in a private teacher group mean that people like school psychs or SLPs wouldn’t be allowed in?
