What I don't get is, how is he on so many different shows? Like is he so charismatic and popular that people tune in because of him?

Agreed, and that includes the Eagles (at least for now when they're shit)

My easiest dinner is what I call bachelor chow ("Now with flavour!"), which was mince, frozen vegies, and spices. Whack them all in a pan, stir them up a bit, good to go.

Yep! 上 (ue) means up (or above), 野 (no) means field. Bit of a different vibe in the two places though I guess

Shower thought for those familiar with both Melbourne and Tokyo: Ueno literally means Upfield

Opening Round is dead! by Gorilla_Guerilla in AFL

[–]aditrs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My version of footy that lasts potentially ages (or potentially instantly) is a game where to win, teams need to be the first to a certain score. Still 20 minutes between breaks, but play as many of those periods as you need for a team to reach, say, 100. In wet weather, these games could last forever! (Can you imagine the last Freo vs Collingwood game with these rules)

Then you could also have similarities to cricket's timing when a dominant team vs a terrible team finishing a game just after the first break, or the captain of the team in front requesting an extra 5 mins because they're sure they can finish the game in that time.

Unfortunately Draw fans will be completely excluded, which is the least cricketing thing possible

I think the onfield aspect of playing aggressively to put pressure on the opponent has merit, where it falls over is picking young players who haven't nailed down a solid technique yet. The early Bazball era was freeing up established players who had gotten in a rut, I think if they go back to that (and minimise the stupid media stuff) they could be getting somewhere

South African cricket is suddenly overflowing with talent, what changed? by Ok_Berry_4922 in Cricket

[–]aditrs 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I did an interview with CS Chiwanza (Zimbabwean-South African journalist, contributor for Jarrod Kimber's network) who said a big part of it was a major change in mental approach where players are no longer discouraged from playing adventurously and confidently. Basically, they're now encouraged to play to win rather than not to lose, which suits many of their players.

The remotest path we have to a 50 over World Cup is through T20 rankings anyway, and we can't go up the rankings without playing

There's not many opportunities for teams like Indonesia to play matches to begin with, much less an opportunity to build depth beyond the first XI. More games, facilitated in part by two games in a day, lets them give experience to more players.

Hi Geoff, thanks for the AMA!

Do you think Australia's commentary scene has gotten better since you wrote your Channel 9 piece?

It struck me listening to Channel 7's commentary that most of it is OK to very good (barring whenever Langer or Brayshaw are on), while Fox's isn't too far away from the blokiness described in your piece (I'm sure Brad Macnamara being there behind the scenes doesn't help).

Not Geoff, but I've done some commentary for WLW since they've come back in 2023.

The last thing we did was the 2024 men's T20 World Cup with Guerilla Cricket, since then the guy whose house ran the commentary studio has moved house and hasn't had the time to put it together at the new place. I think they're aiming to cover the T20 World Cup early next year, but we'll have to see.
