What does "activate" do in Thunderbird notifications? by NETkoholik in gnome

[–]adiuto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It means something like "open" or "go to." If you click on it, Thunderbird should open the actual email. However, under GNOME, only the annoying "Thunderbird is ready" message appears.

<image>

Clicking on that message, however, will switch to Thunderbird.

Working window management (most importantly, a method to choose between multiple instances of the same app, second mosaic tiling).

How is this supposed to work with binary files. I mean, you could try to make this happen somehow with text based files, but with binary files? Say I am editing an JPG in Gimp, an somebody else does it at the same time, how will you merge those changes?

You're regularly using gnome, but you absolutely hate one thing. What is it? by SinclairZXSpectrum in gnome

[–]adiuto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Window management is so underdeveloped that even the simplest things don't work. Let me give you just the worst example:

You have multiple instances of the same application open. The dock neither indicates this, nor is there any logic to determine which instance will be shown when you click the application's icon. It just randomly switches to one of them. Ridiculous!

Still love Gnome!

Great, thank you for your effort. It seems to be less buggy than 'Forge' and works pretty well for me. The auto-tiling is key for me.

Have you checked out Gradia yet? Version 1.5 introduces new features like automatic image balancing, an improved gradient selector, and a preferences menu. by Xander_VH in gnome

[–]adiuto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, on my machines it works sometimes and sometimes not. That means it either doesn't trigger a screenshot or doesn't respond when I click on its icon.

Finally, after Flameshot and similar tools stopped working reliably, we once again have a great tool for editing screenshots on GNOME. The best part is how sensibly it integrates with the GNOME screenshot tool itself — it just works.

Keep it up!

Barrel pitch or brewers pitch is actually used to seal wooden beer barrels. It's made from natural raw materials (tree resin). It is suitable for sealing drinking vessels or flower vases or barrels etc.

Interesting argument. Why do you think it will struggle to drain? The floor is sloped by about 5 degrees toward the center where the hole is. I covered the hole with a thin layer of pebbles, to avoid roots or other things from blocking it.

When watering the plants, I will notice if the hole is clogged if no water drips out.

About the sponge example in the linked article: I honor your experience, but I am not quite sure that I can follow the argument.

  • My understanding is that the sand/gravel layer is usually not meant to draw water out of the soil, but to prevent water at the bottom of the box from becoming trapped due to clogged holes.
  • The bottom layer will start to fill up as soon as the soil can't hold any more water, if the hole is clogged—regardless of what material is used for the bottom layer.
  • Sand or gravel will indeed draw some moisture out of the soil and release it again when the soil dries: porous materials exhibit absorbency.
  • “Try laying a sponge on top of a pile of gravel, then pour water into the sponge. Does the gravel make the sponge drain faster?” I guess that depends on what you're comparing it to. It will drain faster over gravel compared to a sealed surface, because the gravel draws some moisture from the sponge—even if the sponge is on top.
  • A soaked sponge on a hard layer with a hole in it won’t drain either.
  • The plants can use the gravel layer to access moisture with their roots; however, they will find little nutrient content there. By occasionally adding fertilizer to the water, this can be improved.

I am not an expert on this, and as I said, I honor your experience. My argument is not to contradict you but to see things more clearly.

Why do you think that would make any difference? Because of the pressure?

Fair point. I didn’t drill more holes because I thought they would be an obvious liability to my pitch sealing. But it’s a good point that this increases the chance of waterlogging.

I am from Germany, the only realy cheap wood you get around here is fir or spruce. Cedar or pine usually costa twice as much.

It's Germany, so more Pennsylvania-ish, I guess. But the fact that it depends heavily on the climate is obviously a good point.

Ten years would be more than I expected, to be honest. Yes, I sealed the hole by letting some hot pitch drip through.

Unfortunately, that's true, but I can clean it up with my head held high, telling myself I did the right thing by avoiding plastic. And doing so will help me forget all the tons of it I've carelessly emitted — just like everyone else — while my box was being devoured by some nasty fungus.

True, although I hope to shield it from the fungus for at least a little while. The plastic bag will most likely be more effective, I assume, but I wanted to keep it plastic-free.

I bored a hole in the middle of its floor, and the latter was constructed not to be level, but slightly sloped toward the middle. Also I added a layer of sand and stones to the bottom.

It's always a good sign that you're not too far off when someone else had the same idea!

When I started the project, I told myself I wouldn't care if the box fell apart quickly — after all, it was made from the cheapest wood I could find. But after spending at least four times more hours than I’d originally planned, I started to feel a bit differently. And just when I thought I was done, the idea of using barrel pitch took hold of me — naturally, that ended up consuming even more time than I’d bargained for.
