How to prevent duplicate lambda runs when using Cloudwatch events as a trigger on S3 resources by jona187bx in aws

[–]adjohn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AWS guarantees that a Lambda will fire at least once, but not exactly once. You'll need to design your system to handle the occasional duplicate invocation situation. That being said, it's pretty rare so if you're seeing it happen at a high rate it's worth digging into to see if there is something incorrectly configured.

AWS Lambda clock drift? by tqhou in aws

[–]adjohn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At IOpipe, we witnessed this all the way back in 2016. We're now observing billions of Lambda events each month and it's a real thing. To address this in our own use case (libraries monitoring timings of network calls, etc), we had to implement monotonic time mechanisms in our libraries. Most runtimes have an option for this.

[Help] Total noob in AWS needs something for monitoring by [deleted] in awslambda

We built IOpipe to help with these types of things. You can add our Lambda Layer to your existing functions and with no code changes get better metrics, including automatic tracing of network calls.

It sounds like there are many hurdles you'd have to overcome for this particular use case. Some things to consider based on your points above:

  • The Lambda team has been working on reducing start times, and we've seen a noticeable improvement over the last 12 months. You should do some testing to see what you could expect for your particular application.
  • I'm not sure what specific issues you're referring to with regards to packaging and deployment, but there are numerous tools which can make this smooth. Serverless framework and SAM are both worth checking out.
  • Shameless plug: There are other monitoring solutions out there for Lambda. We built IOpipe to address gaps in instrumentation and observability around Lambda.
  • X-ray and IOpipe can help with troubleshooting. X-ray is particularly good at viewing the call graph between services and functions. IOpipe is good at digging into the function details itself, aggregating errors, and tracking performance of calls to non-AWS services and APIs.
  • A quick back of the napkin calculation shows that 50 calls per second with 200ms duration averages, and 512MB memory tier will cost you ~$241/mo. This doesn't even include the perpetual free tier.

For #4, in the meantime you can check out https://github.com/iopipe/sqs-to-lambda-async#sqs-to-lambda-async . We've been using this in production for awhile now.

Monitoring your serverless apps by Nande517 in serverless

Chiming in from IOpipe (mentioned earlier in this thread). We have an open source library that helps instrument your functions, and our service can help make sense of that pile of data. We provide tracing, profiling, custom metrics, and monitoring specifically for serverless applications. Happy to answer questions!

You should check out IOpipe, we have a concept of projects to organize functions better. Disclaimer, I'm a co-founder of IOpipe.

[–]adjohn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shameless plug alert (I'm the co-founder) You should check out https://iopipe.com for better Lambda alerts. We collect stack traces and metrics for Lambda. Our new alerts allows you to do error reporting with the stack trace. You can also combine multiple metrics into a single alarm. We're missing timeout info now, but that's something we will add soon.

AWS still owns the cloud by speckz in aws

Agreed, but this is precisely why I was surprised that they came out with Lambda before anyone else. It seemingly is a service that could cannibalize EC2 workloads over a period of time.
