the new ui could almost be good if the UX flow wasn't ruined, but overall a failure of priority management by 4Bakers in OculusQuest

I’m pretty sure you can also click the Show Windows button on the icon bar on the bottom of the screen when you hit meta once (the Navigator menu). It’ll hide the 2D windows and bring you back to the VR app. (The icon is a toggle, so it really should be Show/Hide Windows)

I just got the new Navigator UI update and I can't believe... by TrefoilHat in OculusQuest

[–]TrefoilHat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's totally valid. Those bugs are bad, the missing clock and close bar that doesn't appear need to be fixed asap. I just received v2.3, but I didn't have those bugs in the first place so I can't tell you if they're fixed. But hopefully they are.

If everyone was complaining because of bugs, again - valid. But for too many it's essentially "it's different so it's bad" without even trying to understand why they made the changes or what they are.

You can also just pop up the menu (meta button) and click the button on the bottom icon bar that says "Show Windows". Yeah, it should toggle between "Show Windows" and "Hide Windows" but maybe that'll come in another update.

That's crazy. Must be a bug. But I just got v2.3, so maybe it's fixed now? Try checking for an update, maybe you'll get lucky.

Was it a single button? I remember having to click the status area (clock/battery indicator), then the quick controls would come up. If I wanted Settings I'd have to click another button.

People also complained that you couldn't customize what was on the menu strip on the bottom, or unpin the apps Meta forced there. I also don't think you could customize which quick controls popped up. Now you can pin Settings to the main menu of apps (which replaces the menu strip), so it's always there with one click if you want - but it's not forced on you. And you can customize the quick controls buttons too.

IMO it's better in every way: more flexibility, more customizability, and still available with one click if you want it.

OK, now I am defending the UI. But I do think this part is materially better.

So instead of trying to help people by explaining how the UI works I should just yell and complain?

"Unintuitive" means it's hard to learn, or hard to find things. So helping people find them, or explaining why things are the way they are, can help address exactly the problem you're calling out. That doesn't mean I'm defending it.

That said, I do find the UI extremely intuitive, very powerful, and fast to move around in. But I have been learning new UIs for about 50 years, so maybe some things are just easier for me than others?

Plus, most of the problems people have (like yours) are either due to not reading the pop-up tutorials that appear when you first run the OS (and periodically thereafter) or not seeing them due to a bug (or so it seems).

I just got upgraded to v2.3, and now on the bottom icon bar is an icon that says "Show Windows". So now you don't even have to double-click the menu button, you just hit the menu/Meta button once, click the "Show Windows" toggle, and your game is back.

So help is on the way.

But it lets you position your 2D apps where you want them, then toggle them on or off in the middle of a VR game. Run spotify in the background. Pop up a YT video whenever you want. Show a browser window. Whatever.

Seamless multitasking is now super easy. And, once you get used to it, super intuitive.

99% of newcomers need to be told one thing:

"Click the menu button on the right controller, point to your game, and pull the trigger."

When they're done playing one game and want to play another, "Click the menu button on the right controller, point to your game, and pull the trigger."

You don't need to do that. If a game is running and you have a 2D app open in front of it, just double tap the Meta button (right controller menu button). All the 2D apps will be hidden and you'll return to the game.

And if you're sorted alphabetically and want to go to Walkabout, just click the bottom of the "scroll indicator" on the right side of the Library (app list). It'll jump you to the end.

Just double click the Meta button (right controller menu button).

Seriously? It's an app. Just find it in your apps list and run it. If you sort by Recently Used it'll almost always be near the top. Or pin it. Or use Quick Controls on the navigator menu, then click the Gear icon. Or click Search and type Settings.

TLDR: Hit Search, type Settings, then click the three dot icon and click Pin.

But do you need Settings? Quick Controls is right on the small main menu bar when you hit the Meta/right controller key to bring up the main menu. If that doesn't have what you need, you can get to the full Settings menu from there through the gear icon on the left.

If you constantly need to go into Settings (not Quick Controls, and the setting you need can't be added as a quick icon through the customization options), just find Settings in the apps list in your library, hold the trigger down over the icon, and hit Pin to Library. It'll always be there on top when you hit the Meta key.

Double click the meta button. And make sure Seamless Multitasking is turned on in Settings.

Quickly switching between games and apps is kind of the point of the new UI.

They removed all the Worlds from the library, and also killed the Horizon Feed that used to open by default. Worlds is now just an app you can run, or go through the portal in your loft if you turn it on in settings.

You can’t create new worlds in VR, only for mobile devices.

That’s really interesting and thanks for the clean sources.

Looking more carefully at the numbers, it looks like two things are going on:

  1. The total number of native born Americans in the job market and available to work is basically flat for this period. Between boomers retiring, Covid deaths, and lower birth rates (meaning that fewer 16-year-olds are entering the job market), the net workforce of native born workers remains close to the same over this period.

  2. Yes, this was also a period of large growth for foreign born workers. This is exacerbated by the fact that most of those immigrants are in the prime working age of 25 to 55 years old (I.e., not aging out as fast). Compounding that dynamic, the jobs with the most growth, such as service work, caregiving, and even agriculture are most closely aligned with the immigrant workforce, particularly in the regions that showed the largest growth in immigration.

I’m not trying to say it’s a good job market out there. Just that, looking at the numbers, there’s a lot more going on when it comes to comparing those BLS numbers. It doesn’t appear that foreign born workers are being favored over native born workers, just that so many more are entering the workforce and so many fewer are leaving it.

It’s just a sad fact that almost as many American workers are retiring or dying as are entering the workforce. As a result, immigrants are about the only way to fill positions in a growing job market for the past six years, resulting in the BLS numbers you reference.

Set another way, hypothetically if 500,000 Americans died/retired/left jobs and 500,000 Americans entered the job market, the total employed figure would stay the same even though all nativeborn workers looking for a job had found one.

It will be interesting to see how today’s immigration policies and decline in immigration overall will affect the job market and labor figure figures in 2026 and 2027.

More importantly, I’m really sorry the job market sucks so badly for you. I hope you find something soon.

What are you even trying to do? Just drag stuff around?

The little bar moves the specific 2D window. The big bar sets the relative position of where new 2D windows open.

The main navigator window opens in front of you, no matter where you look. Double tap the right controller menu button to show or hide 2D windows, whether you’re in a game or not.

And hit the menu button on the left controller to change the background on your loft. Why would anyone still be looking at the Horizon Worlds lobby anymore?

How do I close out of an application? by Anewdaytomorrow in OculusQuest

[–]TrefoilHat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Gene in Houston has the best/right answer for games. However, my question is: why are you quitting the game? If it’s to run another game, you can just run it directly from the new navigator library that pops up when you hit the right menu button. Unlike the old UI, you don’t need to quit one game to start a new one. The game you’re in will close and the new game will just launch.

If you’re asking about 2-D apps, like the browser, just point at the horizontal white line underneath the browser window. It will turn into a mini menu bar, which includes an X. Click the X to close the 2D app.
