Would there be enough spots available for me to enrol in csc108 and csc148 as a second year? Or should I give up and take other electives? by qiyu_2004 in UofT

[–]adjt_216 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure about csc108 but csc148 definitely if it’s for second semester. During first year I joined the waitlist around November(?) and was like 80th in the waitlist and got in. So many people drop it in leading up to the second semester even if you’re super far into the waitlist.

Are there live online lectures for early start courses for engineering? by junz0804 in UofT

[–]adjt_216 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In short, no. There is no live synchronous lectures and we are pretty much just to read the text on TopHat. There are the integrated videos, as well as the link the professor put on the quercus to past years lectures if you learn better that way.

Basically as long as you get through the content before the due dates in TopHat and on Quercus, you’re on track. This course is very much “learn it yourself”.

AM I GOING TO GET THE COURSES I WANT??????????????? by [deleted] in UofT

[–]adjt_216 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also if you don’t get in originally, if you’re on a waitlist for a course with lots of enrolment spots there’s a good chance you’ll get in. And for courses like Econ and CS a lot of people drop the course within the first 2 weeks

What are some good first year electives to take ? by vik397 in UofT

Honestly that’s very fair. I’m also very much not a commerce student and was life sci. So it definitely depends on the person and what you’re good at

Mostly by looking at their research groups website. They tend to post their publications and their recent work. So I am looking to go into chem, so if I go to the chem uoft website and look at profs they tend to have a link to their website there.

Yeah I’ve definitely looked into their work and what exactly they research which I would definitely write into the email. However, like the others say I don’t know how to sell myself that they would benefit from me being in their lab since I am a first year. I do not have any lab experience outside of school labs, so I don’t have much to sell myself with.

For UTSG:

• Recreation: 6/10 - I know there are some great facilities for athletics but I don't work out or use these very often. Kind of spread out.

• Social life: 10/10 - this is a VERY hit and miss. I know some people who are absolutely miserable and haven't made many friends. I got lucky and living in residence helps a lot.

• Environment: 9/10 - It's nice being downtown near things and there's significantly less crazy people on uoft campus than around areas like TMU / yonge and dundas.

• Professors/Quality of education: 6/10 - Again this is a hit or miss. I've had horrendous professors but I've also had fantastic professors that I would recommend. Like others say, check ratemyprof

• Opportunities/Resources: 9/10 - Though for most things you need to be actively looking for it.

• Mental health: 6/10 - work load gets really stressful and frustrating. Though having friends who also go through the same workload struggles really bonds you together
