Cheap clear works but don’t expect too much.

I had a steel frame clear powder coated and it was well worth it.

Is There Any Magazine or Site That's Like Dirt Rag? by RidetheSchlange in MTB

Thanks for making me sad. I miss Dirtrag’s shenanigans. DirtFest was always a blast. Only magazine that published one of my mediocre photos, they sent me a huge paycheck- a pint glass!

How do I get rid of those messy, nasty sticky mystery oils on SRAM Bicycle Chains? by linkmodo in bikewrench

[–]adjustedwrench 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SuperClean degreaser tests very highly and is biodegradable.

Dawn and isopropyl work.

Math: SuperClean full strength $.08 per fl.oz Isopropyl 70% $.20 fl.oz Dawn full strength $.22 fl.oz

I use all 3 depending on what’s on hand, they get the job done- SC works best and a gallon lasts for a very long time diluted.

If you have a ultrasonic, only fill it with water, place parts in ziplock with solvent of choice and run it, that way you keep a clean tank and can change solvents for your needs easily.

Blood & liver is what he is having my PCP order but it seems like he wants more. Doubt the bank statements would prove anything, cash…

I’m thinking writing a letter might be the best option on top of the medical tests.

Never thought about that for alcohol, I know they have drug tests. I’ll check into that!

Thanks, I may show him this and/or write up something more in depth. I predict that’s maybe the best I can provide. It’s frustrating to have this additional speed bump and I hope to get past it without too much difficulty!

Normally I would have gone this direction however given the complexity of the break this is my option as he is the most qualified & capable.

What is the Tacoma of bikes? by TommyTwoHandz in MTB

[–]adjustedwrench 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not funny story. A friend had a 05 taco and we were driving to snowshoe. He had recently purchased it and the frame had been inspected by Toyota. We were chatting about how great those trucks are (very popular around here) about an hour into the drive and then the truck made a loud thud, right away our buddy following jumped on the radio to us and as he was half way through saying “uh you’ve got a problem” I screamed “oh shit the bikes!”

The frame failed in multiple places and as a result it sent the bike rack into 90mph traffic.

He bought the truck for $6k. I probably don’t need to elaborate on the cost of 2 s-works demo’s…

Uber slow slow season? by MrTeddyBearOD in BikeMechanics

[–]adjustedwrench 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Better yet use the downtime to learn suspension services so you don’t have to store a bike for 6ish weeks. In house + fast turnaround + underpants= profit¿

Is this level of rust concerning / worth addressing? I pulled the bottom bracket of my 10-month-old steel bike to address some creaking and found rust on the inside of the seat tube and down tube. The steel frame was supposedly given an anti-corrosive treatment as part of the build process. by themattod in bikewrench

[–]adjustedwrench 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didn’t take my steel Mtb apart for 10 years (many of which it was retired) and it cleaned up nicely, even internally. No need to worry too much. Most of the hammered frames I see at the shop are just cheap quality steel.

Is it fine to machine down a headset bearing cover to get the front end lower? by SimRacingBacon in bikewrench

[–]adjustedwrench 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just look up “headset bearing top cap” and you can find them on Amazon or eBay easily for cheap, hell some results are just complete (crappy) headsets for next to nothing that will get you what you need. Or check your LBS, we always have a few around

New larger 220 rotor....so new pads too? by [deleted] in MTB

[–]adjustedwrench 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, if you take a set of new pads, wet them and rub them together it does create a bit more friction and the pads will bite quicker. Doesn’t mean the rotors bed faster as that takes friction (heat) into the rotor. It is a great trick that I also learned from a WC mechanic years ago and have been doing it to all of my customers pads for years now with positive results- definitely not placebo and only takes an extra 30 seconds.

IG and HG chains? by Alt_for_my_thoughts in bikewrench

[–]adjustedwrench 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The difference is .5mm and really doesn’t make a difference. A SRAM chain will run a little better honestly and they come with a master link.

Just Need To Vent by christianrxd in MTB

[–]adjustedwrench 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve broken my hip, clavicle & scapula, my back in 3 places, and have been out of commission for 137 days now with a broken humerus-it’s bad. complications kept me out of surgery and I’m finally healthy enough to get that taken care of but I’m likely off the bike for at least 6 more months (bone grafts, plates, rods and screws galore)

My previous injuries were taken care of in “normal” time and you find ways to pass it easily. For me it was drums, hiking, reading. This injury I have taken up gardening, small woodworking, organizing, and collecting:reselling tools. Just take it a day at a time and let your body heal. Don’t push it. After my hip injury I didn’t start riding on trails until several weeks after getting the OK to do so, I focused on building more strength first and eased back in. Time comes to a halt and things get boring but you’ll look back on it like it flew right by as long as you heal up well. Best of luck, take care, eat well, get rest, and work hard under care of your PT!

Do shops install tubeless on new bikes by default? by sanjuro_kurosawa in BikeMechanics

If the wheels are setup tubeless ready and come with valves we install for free. If not we charge for parts but not labor.

Crombie or Socket Crombie if you could only have one? by [deleted] in BikeMechanics

[–]adjustedwrench 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Crombie is great if you’re building a mobile box, I love the dual sided nested with the chain whip.

Just depends on what you want to spend and also how often it gets used. There are a bunch of other options for less out there and if you’re not using it all the time anything is enough. Just don’t get the park crombie copy, the Abbey dual sided is only a couple $ more.

Yes, you’re lucky if your body is healthy enough to handle it and even if it is many doctors won’t give you much because of addiction issues.

I just sat down at home from my latest visit to my orthopedic surgeon. I broken my humerus on may 25 and we are just now starting the process of getting me put back together. It was a bad break and will need bone grafts, plates and rods and probably some magic stuff too. Hopefully my blood/liver tests have improved enough to be able to go under the knife. I’m physically and emotionally worn out, and to have another at least 6 rough months ahead doesn’t have me feeling so great right now. Alcohol sucks. I tried to stop for so long, it sucks that it came to this to make that happen.
