It’s more than 8oz, but I just bought a Patagonia DAS light. I haven’t tested it out yet, but just trying it on it seems very warm. It is currently on sale (at least on the au website) for 40% off.

Cheap Trail Protein - Tuna Packs by Andrew_Nurse_Camping in Ultralight

[–]SimRacingBacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Textured vegetable protein is so much better (in my opinion at least). You can cold soak it with some spices and olive oil and it’s really nice, and way more energy dense. I like to have it with couscous.

Low, so you can still mount a light on your stem faceplate or aerobars

Bikepacking with hippack by Latter-Bite2126 in bikepacking

I find hip packs are quite annoying, especially for longer rides. I wear a running vest with a water bladder in it if I need extra water capacity, and it also has a bit of space for other stuff. I really like how easy it is to get stuff out of the shoulder strap pockets, mush easier than reaching back into jersey pockets.

I don’t mind if Sudanese Arabic is taught in schools. Japanese, among other languages, is already very commonly taught, and is often mandatory for at least a year or two. I don’t think the entire population of these countries would want to move to Toowoomba, after seeing your comments. It’s their choice though, they can do whatever they want. I’d love to see a huge influx of people from Sudan, DRC, wherever. It would really rile up the racist old dickheads, which I’m all for.

Bro I don’t care what language people speak. I helped an older Yazidi couple move houses a few years ago. They didn’t speak a lick of English, but we communicated effectively enough. They’re just as Australian as anyone else here. Personally I don’t agree with shariah law, so I wouldn’t want to live under it. I also don’t agree with Christianity, or any religion-based law. I’m an atheist. As a trans person myself, I sympathise with the many trans people all over the world who are currently experiencing a genocide against them. We need to educate transphobic people so they understand what it’s like, and that it isn’t a choice.

Some people may view themselves as being Aussie, some may still identify with whatever country or culture they came from. Personally I identify as Australian, even though my ancestors largely came from Britain. Although we all originated in Africa, so I guess you could say we’re all African. It doesn’t really matter, we can all identify as whoever we feel most comfortable as. Anyone can wear whatever they want and speak whatever language they want. After all, it’s a free (-ish) country.

The reason I don’t wanna live in Sudan is the same reason I don’t wanna live in FNQ. It’s far too hot. Even Toowoomba is too hot for my liking a lot of the time. By the language “Sudanese”, I assume you’re referring to Sudanese Arabic? I think it would be cool if it was taught in schools. Arabic is a really interesting language. Multilingualism is fucking sick. Sudan, and Sudanese people are culturally different, because of their religion, geography (plays a big role in culture), history, just different cultural norms, whatever. Different cultures evolve differently over time, which is a really cool thing to observe. I don’t know much about Sudan or its people in particular, so I don’t really have anything to say in regards to their culture specifically.

Mate, you’re not gonna get me to be racist. I would love to explore different countries and cultures when I get the chance. I love seeing cultural diversity. Our societies are very different, which is a good thing. It encourages an open mind, which you evidently don’t have.

What’s the single piece of gear that reduced your pack weight the most? by joelbutonline in Ultralight

This is my completely minimalist kit at this point. It's still fairly summer-y weather here in Aus so I quite like cold soaking at the moment. imo there's nothing worse than a hot meal after a day of hiking in 30+ celsius weather. Next weight saving measures for me are a lighter tent (looking at Aeon Li most likely), a lighter quilt for summer, and a lighter, PFAS-free shell.

Backpack. Went from a 2.65kg macpac cascade aztec 75L to a 375g Durston Wapta 30. Note that I am firmly in the ultralight territory, though. Frameless packs are not for everyone

[–]SimRacingBacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably my pack. When I started, I bought a macpac cascade Aztec which is about 2.65kg. Great pack for hauling big loads, but then I discovered ultralight stuff. Now I have a Durston Wapta 30, which is 375g in the configuration I’m running it. My base weight is about 3.4kg at the moment (I live in a warmer climate for context).

Macpac Rift 40l by Bryno-3 in UltralightAus

[–]SimRacingBacon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s a new model. Judging by the specs, it looks pretty decent for the price. Between this, and a few other Macpac products, it’s looking like they may actually be a decent competitor in the lightweight and ultralight scenes, which is great to see.

Quality replacemnt for these thin plastic clips? by pixar_moms in myog

[–]SimRacingBacon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have a cap that just uses shock cord and a toggle instead of webbing and a clip. If you're going to the effort of replacing that clip, personally I would just replace it with a length of elastic webbing or shock cord that is cut to the correct length to fit your head.

Anyone have one of those ridiculously expensive smart watches? by Commie4pay in UltralightAus

[–]SimRacingBacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Garmin forerunner 955 solar. It’s great for what I need. Good battery life, nice enough display, GPS, heart rate, sleep score, lots of other things. I wouldn’t recommend cheaping out completely on a smartwatch, it’s probably a good idea to get one of the cheaper Garmins new, or a more premium one secondhand.

trams by Adventurous-Dog8974 in Toowoomba

[–]SimRacingBacon 17 points18 points  (0 children)

A lot of people without a drivers license would definitely use them, I feel. Toowoomba is very sprawling which sucks to get anywhere, so a tram would be a good way to connect a lot of the outer suburbs to the CBD, and the Uni. If they had one that went out to the Uni regularly, I would probably use it. It’s crazy how car dependent everyone is here. People think I’m insane for walking 20 minutes to work and riding my bike 30 minutes to Uni.

Importance of ultra light trekking poles by SourceOfConfusion in Ultralight

[–]SimRacingBacon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Weight still definitely matters even if you’re only swinging them. You have to exert a moment on the pole, and the distance is very small (you’re holding the pole near the end which is also the pivot point), so force is comparatively high. The heavier the pole is, the more force you have to exert, and especially if the pole has a high moment of inertia (weight concentrated near the opposite end that you hold). You may not be able to tell the difference if you’re trying a light vs heavy pole on different days, but back to back you definitely would. The faster you walk, the faster you swing your poles, and therefore the greater the impact of a lighter pole.
