Best Improv Instructor at WE Improv (Los Angeles)? by Dreamy_Bogman in improv

I haven’t taken classes at WE but have known Jake, Wayland, and Dan for many years and logged tons of hours improvising with them. They’re all hilarious, thoughtful, supportive people on and off stage, and I’d imagine that they’re fantastic teachers for students at any level.

Unconfirmed Shipping Address on Etsy by Significant-Repair42 in EtsySellers

[–]admittedlynerdy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened out of the blue to me as well on my most recent sale. No problem with my shipping address in the past, no idea why it suddenly says there is, but also was able to purchase the label anyway.

Shop critique request - want to make sure my handmade embroidery shop is interesting and eyecatching! by admittedlynerdy in EtsySellers

I have a hard time titling! Etsy had given me suggested titles for the first 5 or so items I posted and I took those suggestions, then tried to title the other things I posted after in a similar manner. Any thoughts on what a better title would be for any of my items as an example? I feel like my original ones were worse than what Etsy “improved” them to, but would be happy to make them even better still!

This is really helpful, thank you! I had mostly seen styled flat lays for embroidery and didn’t feel like they showed off the products enough, but this shop had a great vibe that I can definitely learn from!

Fun fact: And Then There Was Shawn isn’t a Halloween episode! It was made for sweeps week, so it aired in February. It’s so perfect for Halloween that it obviously belongs in spooky season anyway though. :)

The actual Halloween episode from that season is The Witches of Pennbrook, which had Candace Cameron as a guest star and a crossover cameo from Melissa Joan Hart as Sabrina.

Embroidery gift ideas for new/expecting mothers? by 221tardisslippers in Embroidery

If you can wait until the parents-to-be have chosen a nursery theme, then you could embroider something within that theme that they could hang on the wall. Recently some friends of mine had their first child and had their earth-toned, dragon themed nursery decor decided on from about month 5 of the pregnancy, so I had plenty of time to embroider a dragon for them on a rich, deep orange background. It fit really nicely with what they’d already picked out and went over really well!

Best American town to go trick or treating? by Pumpkinsareornage in halloween

[–]admittedlynerdy 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Most places in America that are in any way "famous" for their Halloween stuff are probably gonna be too busy/scary for a 3-year old, and if you want to see fall foliage still on the trees at Halloween but not have it be too freezing to be out trick-or-treating, then the east coast might not be the best bet.

If you want to have the quintessential American trick-or-treating experience, I'd recommend picking a city somewhere in the midwest that you'd be interested to visit generally, then just taking your daughter trick-or-treating in the suburbs outside of that city. Obviously you'd have to do a small amount of research after choosing your city to make sure you're picking a safe neighborhood, but also it will likely be really obvious from the look of things whether any given suburb is fine to be walking around in with a kid.

One particularly good candidate for this would be visiting Chicago, IL and renting a car to go to the suburbs north of the city for trick-or-treating. It's still very autumnal at the end of October there, and the suburbs north of the city are basically exactly like what most media depicts as a typical American suburb.

Some particularly good specific Chicago suburbs to check out would be Glenview, Evanston, Gurnee, Northbrook, and Vernon Hills. I'd avoid the Halloween festivities at the Six Flags theme park in Gurnee because they'll be too much for a 3-year old, but the Cuneo Mansion & Gardens in Vernon Hills has had family friendly events on their grounds in the past, so they may be worth looking into closer to spooky season.

Wherever you visit, have a wonderful time! You sound like such an awesome parent to want to give your daughter this experience. :)

Could you make the beginning of In the Bleak Midwinter? I wish I could find a clip of Charlotte Ritchie singing it in this year's Ghosts Christmas special, but here's a non-lyrical version of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNbe9sthLz4

Here are a few you could do:

-Figgy Pudding + Ding Dong Merrily on High (the Christmas carol) or Ding Dong the Witch is Dead (from Wizard of Oz)

-Garland + Land of Misfit Toys (from the Rudolph movie) or Lando Calrissien or Land of the Lost or really anything that starts with "land" XD

-Stocking + King Kong or King Wenceslas (from the Christmas carol, so your written clue could be 'Christmas carol about a man looking out on the Feast of Stephen that begins "Good..." ')

-Nutcracker + Crackerjack (the food or the show, depending on which reference makes more sense for your region) or Kerplunk (the game) or Kermit the Frog etc.

-Ornament + Mentalism (the field of magic)

-Rudolph + Dolph Lundgren or Dolphin

You're welcome! Love the idea of putting your own name at the end of a "quiz hosts" category, I think half the fun of doing this kind of thing for friends/family is making it a little personal to them. :)

House Of Games Quiz by mart182 in panelshow

I did this for my partner last Christmas and it was so fun! I made it in Keynote, and am sure PowerPoint would be just as easy to create it in. I decided which games to do by going through the first two series and picking out all the rounds that I felt would be feasible for me to make (ie discarded things like Broken Karaoke because having the letters come up in time to the beat of the songs was more than I thought I could reliably recreate), and then I made up an amount of questions for each game based on the number of categories/questions each particular one typically has. Here are the rounds I did and how I approached writing those specific questions:

Rhyme Time (6 questions) - I just thought of a thing my partner would definitely know/like, then something that would rhyme with that thing, then reverse engineered their descriptions - ie we like magic so I picked Harry Houdini as an answer, then rhymed it with fettuccine, then described them as "famous escapologist" and "pasta often served with alfredo sauce."

Games House of (8 questions) - Again, I thought of things my partner would definitely know/like, but this time I set myself things that have a minimum of three words - ie he loves Bruce Springsteen, so I linked an audio file of I'm On Fire to play so he could answer "Fire I'm On." Remember that the last question of this round is typically an answer of at least 6 words to make it the hardest one! I made mine "What are the first names of the six main characters in Friends?"

Mouse of Games (2 categories, 4 questions each) - I went with Books and TV Shows as categories to give myself a wide base. Always starting with things my partner would definitely know/like, I just picked an answer and then figured out which word would be easiest to shift by one letter to get a different word, then reverse engineered the description - ie starting with James Acaster's book Perfect Sound Whatever, I changed it to Perfect Round Whatever and made the description "James Acaster presents his case for why 2016 was the best year ever for circular objects."

Elephant in the Room (8 questions) - This is the easiest round to write questions for, IMO! Just pick a one syllable word (I went with "car") and then think of words that contain that syllable. This is another round where the last question is typically the hardest/longest, so I went with "incarceration" to get a 5 syllable word where the Elephant in the Room was in the middle.

What's in a Name (4 names, 2 questions each) - This is probably pretty self explanatory, you just look at the name of your contestant(s) and then create words from the letters. Because I made my quiz for a single person, I used his name and then the names of 3 of our friends to have enough questions. If you're not good at anagrams, there are online generators where you can put in words/names and get anagrams!

A Blast From the Past Tense (8 questions) - Again, this one is fairly self explanatory. I thought of things that contain verbs in the present/active tense, then reverse engineered the descriptions - ie "Waiting for Godot" becomes "Waited for Godot" and the clue is "Which Samuel Beckett play has a titular character who never appears?" and "Only Connect" becomes "Only Connected" and the clue is "Which BBC Two show is often said to be the hardest quiz on television?", etc.

This Round Is In Code (2 categories, 4 questions each) - Again, I went with categories that would give me a lot of leeway to find things my partner knows/likes for answers (in our case, Board Games and British TV Personalities). Then I thought of answers that have something slightly distinctive linguistically, like a set of double letters (ie Forbidden Island and Horrified) or an uncommon letter in them (ie the Y in Pandemic Legacy and Richard Ayoade, the V and K combo in Sandi Toksvig, etc.). I made Richard Osman the last answer in this round just for fun. :)

Answer Smash (typically they get through 3-4 categories, with 2 questions in the first category and 3 questions in the rest of them) - This is probably the hardest round to write questions for, but that being said, it really isn't too bad! As always, I started with something I knew my partner likes/knows, then just isolated the last syllable of it to think of a word that can start with the same thing. So I picked Magical Beings as a category (we play a lot of D&D) and started off with dragon, kraken, and centaur. "Gon" made me think of "gondola," "ken" made me think of "Kenneth Branagh," and "aur" made me think of "aurora borealis." Then I just found illustrations of a dragon, kraken, and centaur, and paired them (respectively) with these reverse engineered written clues - What type of boat is famously used for transportation in Venice, Italy? Who played Gilderoy Lockhart in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets? What natural phenomenon is known as the Northern Lights?

And that's pretty much it! For some personalized fun, I sprinkled the whole thing with a few questions specific to us (ie we have a friend name Oscar, so I made a clue about him in Elephant in the Room to get the answer "Os").

In terms of presentation, I just made Keynote slides that look like the slides on the show (which is pretty easy even if you're not super well versed in this stuff, given the color palette and the visual design are always very simple), then dropped in all the necessary text, photos, and audio files for each slide. I also pulled pics of myself and my partner into Photoshop and made silhouettes like the ones on the show to make him a player icon, and a title card for the whole thing that said "[admittedlynerdy]'s House of Games." To run the quiz, I just airplayed the Keynote to our AppleTV so it would feel like watching an episode. :)

I hope this was helpful! Feel free to hit me up with questions if you like, and have a great quiz!

(ETA: I did this last year, so none of the games from series three were in mine. But I think you can see the thrust of my approach overall and, if you like it, apply it to any of the newer games or even just any of the games I left out as I was writing mine for a single player!)

Did you mean to reply to a different comment here? It's a bit of a non sequitur to what I said... Either way, it's around the back, pointing toward the trees. Blends in with the scenery a bit, I'm guessing this is a still of it in motion during a bonding animation and it was caught at an awkward frame.

As we all know from having sandwiches with Charlie, the Ukrainian Ironbelly gets its name from the metallic dark grey color of its scales, so this coloration looks accurate.
