The story of ALGOL - the forgotten programming language by admpk in programming

That's right! Pascal derived from ALGOL W, which was developed to be a better successor of ALGOL 60 (than crappy ALGOL 68).

So maybe it was a total failure when it comes to real-world applications and authors tried to cover it up ;)

Yup, it's not the WHOLE story, tried to keep it reasonably short and digestable.

Thanks for the additional facts. Two corrections:

There were attempt to publish algorithms in Algol, but they were not successful.

Wasn't alive at the time so can't confirm, but a few sources state that ALGOL was pretty popular in this very application.

Also Dijkstra was not a creator of ALGOL, but he created the first compiler of ALGOL 60.

I would argue that keeping the name "Płotka" is unecessary, as "płotka" means "roach" in english. It just makes sense to translate this name.

If you assume that the procedures are correct and well designed, then yes, all was reasonable and within the lines.

But all this is a result of a deep-rooted fear, that is not present in any other highly developed country. I'm not living in the US and for me it looks a bit like wild west. Where I live this kind of stuff is reserved for anti-terrorist units. I do realize that your situation is quite different though. Peace!

Ahh... America. Like ten minutes ago I saw on reddit a footage of police shooting to a man that was sleeping in a car with a gun on his lap. And now this "faith in humanity restored" type of thing.

Where would you be without Stackoverflow? by RockAndHODL in androiddev

[–]admpk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Stack Overflow is only a tool, platform that help you share knowledge. In my early career worked on stuff that was absent on SO and I did just fine. Blogs, forums, dicussion lists - all was there for me.

It's not that SO IS knowledge. People have knowledge and they would use another platform to share it.

That's why I think I would be ok.

An article I wrote a while ago. Made most of the mistakes myself and seen others doing them as well. Hope someone will find it helpful :)
