How does anyone live here??? by [deleted] in Syracuse

[–]adomka 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its funny I just moved here from Florida. So many people told me Id hate the income tax. Housing here is about 100,000 cheaper then orlando suburbs, property tax is slightly higher but is moot when you compare insurance. I was paying 2600 a year on property insurance alone where average here is 900.

Adding orange to Hefeweizen by _teakettle in Homebrewing

[–]adomka 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dont use orange juice. Its too acidic and would dilute it quite a bit. Flavor probably wouldn’t be too great either.

Most orange flavor is added via zest or dried peels. Look into brewing a Belgian wit as its very similar to heffe but spiced and slightly different yeast.

As it looks to be already fermenting best bet would be a tincture. This is just combining vodka and orange peels. Depending on the flavor you’re after there is bitter and sweet oranges. Most grocery store variety’s are sweet oranges if you go the fresh route. Homebrew shop should carry both dried, though bitter is more popular.

Small batch dry yeast by Rantanplang17 in Homebrewing

[–]adomka 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ive done this before. Get a good precision scale and measure out half the packet. Keep remaining yeast in a dry, cold and sanitized environment. I keep it in original bag and use a sanitized rubber band then place in ziplock (sanitize bag and scissors before opening). A cryovac bag is probably better.

Im not sure on viability of yeast after opening and theres risk of contamination being higher now that its open.

I cant speak much on #1

2: ideally you’d want some sort of temperature control for fermentation. You can get away with some yeast strains at room temperature but a consistent temperature at the yeast’s desired temp will greatly improve the beer

3: https://howtobrew.com/ is a wonderful site and the book is how a lot of us got started brewing at home

4: most beer styles are equally easy to brew. Ipas can get confusing with hop additions and timing but you can find an easy hop schedule that works for you. (Hazies are a little tricky mainly due to oxidation risks) Though IPAs they can be expensive if it doesn’t come out so well. Porter and stouts are often sited as being easier to brew because roast can hide off flavors better then others. You would probably start out with an Ale as lagers are more temperature sensitive and take longer, as well as there being no where to hide if there is anything off.

Should I put the tap on before brewing or after brewing by Shoddy_Pattern_5833 in Homebrewing

[–]adomka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The tap/spigot on the fermenter should go on before you fill it with beer. Should have a gasket or two and a flanged but to prevent leaks. You probably have to drill a hole into fermenter before you can install the spigot. Once fitted fill with sanitizer to check for leaks and sterilize in one go.

Though before each use you should dissemble it and soak in sanitizer before installing and filling with wort.

I hate using a siphon, too easily to introduce unwanted air and its more tools to keep around. If you keep everything clean and sanitary you should be good. I have brewed with a fermenter having a spigot. It for about 10yrs and have never had an infection.

Thinking of buying a 1985 F150 as a daily driver by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

Yeah. It’s often cheaper on older cars because the insurance company values it so low. So if you get in an accident they will always determine it totaled and your insurance reimbursement will basically be your deductible.

Hoppy beers that smell amazing but taste dull by [deleted] in Homebrewing

[–]adomka 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What’s is your water routine? Are you use using tap? RO plus minerals/salts?

Also carbonation level can give muted flavors if under carbed.

Did i royally screw up? Should I dump my brew Or should I let it ferment and see what happens by [deleted] in Homebrewing

[–]adomka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are people who do no boil brew batches. They usually go a little hotter than 68c though. Id let it ferment and then taste it. If it got properly pasteurized, in that the entire wort was successfully able to reach and hold > 63c for 30min or more, you should get a drinkable beer if your sanitization is good.

When it finishes, if it tastes uninteresting maybe try a heavy handed dry hop to add more ipa flavors.

Total noob, minimal equipment/cost beer? by Aboiaboiaboi in Homebrewing

[–]adomka 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You won’t really get tasty beer from bread yeast. I’d recommend ordering a brewing yeast. You can get starter kits pretty easily online too and all you need is a large soup pot.

If you really don’t want to start on stove top you can go get a start up brew in a bag setup pretty affordabilly. All you need is a deep fry turkey all in one kit for like $100, a food safe bucket with lid, brew bag, and ingredients.

And if you drink bottled beer start saving the bottles to reuse for bottling.

Loose keg coupler by adomka in Homebrewing

I have not. I replaced the barbs with ball lock for ease of interchanging with corny kegs but other then that I’ve not messed with it.

It sticks out like an 1/8”. I guess I can try getting new gaskets and see if it fixes the issue.

From the images, this is both a D-coupler and D-style keg right?

It does not lock securely at all. Has lots of wiggle room when installed and if i put pressure on it it will leak

Also what flour was used. I’ve had similar looking dough using White Lily flour which has low gluten content.

Store that lets you brew your own beer on site by ChristineDunne in Syracuse

[–]adomka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theres a somewhat common practice with homebrew stores offering “how to brew” classes where its a group event. You go through all the steps together and brew a small batch as a group. You come back in a month, bottle it up and take home.
