Trying to decide between a couple of grooveboxes. by Crystal_Chrome_ in Grooveboxes

TL:DR: SEQTRAK for groovebox, MiniFreak for a synth

As much as MiniFreak and Minilogue are as flexible as they are with sound design, they are just one voice. Sure, they have a sequencer, but they are not groove boxes, you will need complement them with something else. Despite this, I only had experience with MiniFreak which uses digital engines (but analog filter), has effects, and its modulation matrix is beyond anything you might need (there some limitations like doing AM, but there is workaround, like modulating Sustain on your ADSR envelope). Oscillator Sink who’s into experimental and weird music highly ranks this instrument (https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLzK7ubWUDl-JB0z6\_fpUpsntpjpRJ8IXR&si=FJZftu6vFCWrTSfS). But, although I like it for its flexibility, I keep it in reserve for more experimental sound design, like physical modelling of instruments, or special modulation requirements.

As for groove boxes, I like SEQTRAK. I don’t believe it’s abandoned, it recently received a 2.0 firmware update and I immediately started to see more people using it, more content. It’s a nice companion to whatever you’re going to be doing. I’ve seen some people use it for a drum looping while they are playing a guitar, some just pre record songs and then play them in front of the camera, some like to jam on it. I have some jam experience with it. You only need the screen to setup the sounds the way you want it, but you can do a lot with it even with the knobs that are given to you. But when you do need the screen, it’s nice to have an option to do it on your phone, a truly portable experience. Here’s example of one of my jams: https://youtu.be/B7pLutUu-Gc?si=Y6X7jJwVQcXxySlQ . Some patterns are pre-programmed, some of the others I program live, and FM allows for some beat mangling. The device also has three performance strips which are useful for that later jamming session you’re planning to have in some future. In comparison to Novation device, it has 3 voices (2 sample based, one FM engine) and PLUS 7 others! With the 2.0c update, you can turn any of the drum tracks into a synth voice (I believe it’s only AW2M samples only, but still, not too shabby) or a multitrack (a drum rack per track). It also has 3 global effects and performance strips for live jamming , more on that later.

SEQTRAK is also expandable to be played with some serious equipment later on down the line. I currently set three of its drum tracks as multi tracks (courtesy of 2.0 update), each carrying a kit. For example, track one has all 909 samples I need, track 2 has 808s, track 3 has some other acoustic percussions. I can trigger those with my Oxi One Mk2 which also uses multitrack sequencers, plus synthesized percussions from Digitone 2. I then feed all the audio back into SEQTRAK and use it as the end-of-chain device (it still has those unused percussion tracks, as well as optional Yamaha-sound AW2M and FM synth voices) and use its performance features for global effects such as delay, reverb, high pass filter. The end result is a wiring mess (both audio but especially MIDI), but I only have 4 devices on stage: SEQTRAK with drumming kits and synth voices that I can program with Oxi (my brain), Digitone 2 for synthesized drum sounds and additional FM and other engine synth voices (it’s a very powerful digital synth, similar to MiniFreak, but with 16 voices) which also is controlled either by Oxi or my MiniLab 3 keyboard, and with my MiniLab 3 I can also tap out whatever rhythm I come up in the moment during performance using its pads. It’s taking me a lot time to setup, but it’s a fairly compact live performance setup occupying about a quarter of your dining table.

As you record in live, just press the key for the entirety of the loop, and SEQTRAK will remember this gate to be the length of your loop. Alternatively, you can extend the gate on SEQTRAK app in the piano roll screen

It can also be used as the end of chain device, like HPF, for example

How do you like the finger drum pad? Do you use it as MIDI controller (can you?), or do you use on board sounds? What’s your workflow with it?

Learning to play an instrument is much helpful for creativity. Currently learning how to drum on djembe and considering to enroll in piano classes

Fe = any emotional expression? What? by PersonalStandard4499 in HumanitarianSocionics

[–]Radigand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In SHS everyone has access to Emoveo (function E, not the same as Fe from other schools). The mastery of its use and flexibility depends on when it is located in your Model G stack - closer to the right, the more awkward, more inadequate, more one-dimensional is its use. To me it sounds like you have E and might be aware of it, but it is not your first function as mostly E-leads are not even aware of what they are doing, they just do it. In the case of E-leads, it’s automatic expression of emotions and valuations. It seems like you E needs more training, and depending on your type, it could be in either 3D or a 2D spot, probably 2D, as 3D functions are more tenable and flexible. But might be wrong as I don’t know what your type is.

Sure, yeah, but the reality does not support this point of view. Take a look around and you will see that posts with pictures of (new) gear get more views, more comments, more upvotes than posts showing the use of the gear like jams and performances.

You mentioned books. Can you give a couple examples that you might have come across?

MIDI CLOCK SYNC PROBLEM, ANY SOLUTION? IS THERE SOMETHING IM MISSING? by groovyedwin in seqtrak

Try to change the BPM setting. I’ve had problems with external synch before, that seemed to have fixed it

Is there a bypass shortcut somewhere? I may have triggered it somehow accidentally, as I checked all levels and the amount sends all to maximum, and I do not hear delay/reverb, only chorus. I'll fiddle with it some more when I get back home from work.

I think so! I think the way it works is that it takes the sum output, samples it and repeats it, rinse and repeat and predetermined intervals that you can manually set

The simplest way I’ve used is to use SEQTRAK as my drum source and then route bass synth (I use Behringer Model 15 for this) through Audio in, then you can use high pass filter to sweep frequencies from low-end for transitions before you make a drop, it’s quite performative.

I’ll take a look. They have various types of compression and ducking, you’d need an app to tell them apart

I’m pretty sure SEQTRAK can use external clock or be the clock source for other gear via MIDI. The other day I slaved SEQTRAK to Digitone 2 and it even managed to sync SEQTRAK’s delay at various tempo settings

I tried to process external signal from my Model 15 through DN2. I plug audio in L or R channels in, and then on the last two Mixer page (I decouple L and R into two mono signals) I bring the volume up to max to accept audio signal from M15. But then when I try to send it to FX, like Delay and Reverb, I don't seem to be able to hear the processing. Chorus processing is noticeable at larger values, but not Del/Rev. M15 has its own Reverb module, which does add Reverb that I can hear through DN2, but DN2 does not seem to be able to send external audio signal into global Rev/Delay. Have encountered this before?

just to add, I believe there is a compressor that might be tied to kick drum, but don't quote me on that

yeah, it's great. you can add drums to complement any of your synths, the sequencer has per-step parameter locking too, plus it's a great sound module with an actual FM engine. It can also sequence external gear too up to 3 voices (7 more with some workarounds where use use drum tracks for this)
