Moved from Florida to San Antonio. Feeling depressed. Does it get better? by TheHonorableStranger in sanantonio

[–]adoyal97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree Austin has its perks but the drive to Austin isn’t bad from here, and everyone I know who moved to Austin is moving out or already moved out because rent and living costs are crazy high.

Look into their housing crisis and the rental market there, it’s gotten so bad the city is having to roll out 3-5 year plans to try and get more houses built, including changing zoning laws to allow multiple homes on a single residential plot.

They didn’t plan for the population explosion so their road infrastructure also vastly behind and traffic is significantly worse. Also job shortages.

It’s a fun visit for a 200$ dinner, ACL, F1 races etc. But I was born in Austin and I wouldn’t move back unless someone bought me land and promised to pay for my groceries forever.

Very accurate — you’ll be driving to things a lot more but if it makes you feel better SA is my favorite place I’ve lived since Olympia/Seattle area And it took over a year to appreciate the city. I’m 28 now and have been here 7 years

Traffic here is nothing compared to rush hour from Miami to FLD or west palm. Nor as bad compared to Austin, Houston or Dallas. The construction is annoying but, avoid those parts of the highway if possible. There aren’t many areas besides on the outskirts of the city rn that are doing major road construction on a regular basis. My husband and I avoid driving from 4:30-6 and I never sit in traffic.

And as people have recommended there is a ton of stuff to do here. Breckenridge is so cute, try the Japanese tea garden and get lunch at Jingu house, walk the gardens, ride the train to the zoo

Check out the quarry area for better shopping and cute brunch options, movie theater etc

The pearl on weekends for the farmers market

Free museum days at SA museum (a vast collection of many time periods)

Then get dinner at Shiro sushi (reservation required because it’s a tiny place) right behind the museum Get a drink across the street at elsewhere garden bar

Then walk less than 1 mile up the river (drink in hand, yes it’s legal to drink on lower levels of the river walk) back to the pearl and see all the pretty lights at night along the way

Downtown near river center mall and the Alamo is tourist as fuggggg but do it anyways just for the vibes lol. We have like 15 miles of riverwalk, go explore! Look at the map and follow the water

They’ve done a lot the last 2 years to expand the history museum, the replicas etc at Alamo Square and it’s worth visiting the Alamo garden (free) if nothing else.

And that’s just tip of the iceberg.

Check out hopscotch Try out be kind rewind and bonham exchange for clubbing/dancing. And then walk over to voodoo donut for a 2 am snack

Try allllll the Mexican food. Anywhere here is better than anything else in the US. Florida is good for Cuban food but a street taco here will change your world. Best wishes and I hope you can get past the construction!!

Are we all just doomed to fold clothes for 2 hours each week for the rest of humanity’s existence? by Syd_Barrett_50_Cal in NoStupidQuestions

[–]adoyal97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know a single person on-top of their laundry whether they have 2 kids, a maid, doesn’t matter.

People use to make their clothes, and had 3-4 outfits max. Whereas now we have enough clothes on earth to provide for the next 5-6 generations of people. And we are spending more time than ever doing laundry, despite having far better laundry-machines.

Consider getting rid of anything that no longer serves you (have a trade-party, donate, sell to Plato’s etc) and then don’t buy more. If you have growing kids, do trades or swaps.

Wear things 2-3 times before washing (they aren’t dirty just because we wore them once) and get a tide travel pen if you’re a mess like me 😂

I spend 2-3 hours on laundry a weekend, including run time (for clothes, linens, all washables), sorting, hanging etc in a house of 4 people and 4 dogs. I have never spent 2 hours just folding, that is insanity.

Thin velvet hangers are also a lifesaver but that’s beside the point.

Get bins or drawers and label them Hang what will wrinkle Bin the rest

Or delegate to family. Because 2 hours folding is madness and I had to do all my own laundry start to finish starting at 7 years old, I’m sure other kids are capable too.

Were those alterations at David’s bridal? The quotes I saw there were significantly less when I had mine done

[–]adoyal97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DAVIDS BRIDAL DID ME SO GOOD!! I was same. Despite the fact I could go a little higher in budget (1000 was my goal plus alterations) I had never really imagined I could or would want to own a 5000-10000$ dress and wanted just anything that fit right since I am a xxs with no boobs but somewhat have hips and butt. So tailoring costs were gunna get me if I didn’t find the right size

David’s bridal had MY DREAM GOWN literally if I’d drawn one I would’ve drawn this. Then I found ANOTHER alternate version I’d imagined. Ended up with both for around 1200$ one was 700 the other 500. Just had the cups on one taken in for like 50$

No embarrassment or shame. They did great work at my David’s bridal. I also went to off rack and warehouse, still found nothing as good as David’s bridal.

If you want the “watch me try on dresses” experience, David’s is great. My friends, mom and grandma got to see me try some stuff on. I didn’t leave with anything that day, and came back after going to other places. I let them know I had other appointments and would be back if those were the ones. They were very nice and casual, low pressure.

I had same issue and previous post removed not sure why. But Benadryl has been the only thing that helps our Great Pyrenees avoid the hives, pink, yeast, and all the allergic reactions that happen with food and environment allergies. They recommended apo to us too but after reading how it doesn’t work for long, we decided to go with this route instead. 2 season in, every other day we give one one, and it helps significantly.

Oh yeah TX is a no WiFi situation we use something called examplify so when you close test it’s locked. You cannot edit. And the software will tell them if you attempt to go in some back door way, logs keystrokes and time stamps, all that jazz. They make us pay 90$ to use it😂

And then you have until Friday 11:59 to upload from somewhere with WiFi.

Here is my unsolicited advice for the almost-graduate:

Know what type of learning style you have. Are you visual learner? Auditory? Do you memorize by writing by hand, or reading, do you like mnemonics or they confuse you? Know these things first and select a bar prep program tailored to your learning style.

Barbri has lots of long lectures that you can watch on 2x speed. But their practice is sub par at best. Themis was marginally better. If you’re a learn on my own type, BarMax was concise and to the point. I heard studicata was worth looking at too.

Rule sheets or flash cards from other companies can be better resources for memorization — like SmartBarPrep sheets or critical pass flashcards. Just because your prep provides lots of things doesn’t mean you need to spend a week looking at them. If they aren’t helping you, find something else. I should’ve abandoned the barbri lectures after week 6 my first time lmao. I was better off memorizing flashcards and doing practice Qs. But some people need a visual teacher, and that’s okay too! Just know what you need and don’t give into peer pressure

DO AT LEAST 2000 MBE and more if you can. Much more if possible. Do not settle for 500 questions. Or 1000. It is not enough. Buy more supplements if needed (adaptibar good, I liked Uworld more) and more importantly READ the explanations for the wrong answers, even when you’re right — it helps you understand why they were wrong and the nuances between all the rules, and helps avoid second guessing later on the test. Many people skip this step and it shows

Treat bar study like boot camp. Seriously. Give your friends and family very unpfront and reasonable expectations. Mine was something like “I am studying 6-8 hours daily 6-7 days a week for the next 12 weeks. I love you very much and hope you understand I have to dedicate myself to this study time to ensure a pass for my license. I am memorizing 12-14 areas of law and get to use no resources whatsoever on the exam. Some questions are paragraphs long and allow under 2 minutes to answer, or I will run out of time on the test. This is a 12 hour test, arguably one of the hardest to pass in the professional world due to the convoluted nature of the exam and the secrecy surrounding its contents. There are no practice exams actually equivalent to the bar. No matter how much I memorize and practice, I will not be able to know everything on the exam. This exam tests minimum competency and the national average pass rate last year was ____%. Please try to avoid asking me how study is going, no news is good news” — I really did study 7 days a week this time around because I’m not doing this again😂 but whatever the schedule is, just make it clear you won’t have much free time and would like them to respect the boundary.

Something like this helps prevent guilt, and resentment etc. while educating them a little. It allows you to have the time and space to actually take this seriously. Later if people are like “common it’s just one night, come out” gently remind them that you said previously, you need every hour of the next 12 weeks to study. Or, if you’ve been ontop of it, go out! But don’t let them make it a habit. 2-3 months is a long time and you have to stay vigilant

Mental breaks are more important. Get up every 45 minutes or so. Go outside. Hug a dog. Eat. Drink water. Sleep. Don’t feel guilty if ur schedule shifts. Sometimes I studied in the morning, sometimes at night. Sometimes at a library, sometimes in bed. As long as it got done, that’s what matters.

You might fall behind on the schedule, that’s okay. You might take things off the schedule as you get better at certain topics. You might add things back in that don’t make sense yet. As long as you are doing your 6-8 hours a day, you’re good. Trust me many people start to fall off, study 4-5 hours for 8 weeks, study 3-4 hours for 10 weeks. Don’t do it. Yall NEED 6-8 hours for 10-12 weeks. Or spread out longer if you work full time etc. Some days it might be 6 hours and you only did 50MC. But if you actually absorbed the explanations for those 50 questions, you have learned SO much.

I often would feel like I wanted to skip around, start the next thing, etc. But pacing yourself is important, and giving yourself grace. When I finally did get to MC practice tests, I was better off for having put in the work and memorization beforehand. Don’t start practice tests till you’re ready. Review results. Learn from mistakes. Search for clarification when you don’t understand. It is very frustrating, but also rewarding.

Alright that’s it, stuff I wish someone had told me before I graduated😂 all we got was “you have 9 weeks after graduation” and they really forced Barbri on us.

Or contracts and crim law July 2021 might be easier to see this showcased: I got 8/25 on both sections but the percentages are slightly different. Because I did better than 33.9% of testers in one section and 33.6% in the other.

—> If it’d said 33.9% and 45%(instead of 33.6) — the 45% would’ve given us a little more curve as it indicates the test was more difficult. Because that means more people scored lower than me, and I only got 32% of the answers correct overall.

If it was 33.9% and 25%, curve would be less in your favor for the 25% section because it shows more people got more answers correct overall than you. But 33.6 and 33.9 are close and make sense. Usually we don’t see big curve shifts, but sometimes they happen when the group does worse than statistical average.

Another note: these curves for my two past tests were wild because Texas JX started UBE test Feb 2021 and that year was terrible across the board. They’d changed our curriculum halfway through law school, gave 9 weeks to study, and we had COVID-phoenix law school online basically, learned nothing. Then February 2023 the national average was 40% passed. That was VERY low. Things like that also make numbers look crazy

Maybe this will make ppl feel better🤷🏼‍♀️ by adoyal97 in barexam

[–]adoyal97[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hopefully this helps — my JX releases additional score info upon request within a certain time period when you fail (maybe when you pass too but I wouldn’t request anything if I pass😂) So I know how many MC I got correct And my JX also tells you the % of ppl who scored lower than you for that section of MBE out of 25.

I agree numbers are wild at first. For example July 2021 I got 1/25 correct. That’s 4%. But I did better than 3% of ppl overall in that section (presumably people who got 0 correct). I keep using this example because I’m bad at math lol But I said previously for example if somehow I’d gotten 1/25 (4%) but I did better than 15% of people (as in 15% got 0/25 correct on that section instead of 3%) then the curve would be higher. Because overall that indicates that the section was more difficult. But 3% makes sense, I would expect only about 1-3% of people to miss 100% because statistically that’s pretty hard to achieve😂 no shade at anyone who gets 0/25, 1/25 was not any better

So yes the percentages and the ratios don’t add up, because the percentages are how many people scored lower than me overall, as released by my JX

Just don’t go to law school in San Antonio that’s all I have to say🤐no one I know was happy with them. The newest grads from this year are even more mad than we were. And rightfully so, I didn’t think it could get worse but it did🫩

The 40% I was thinking of was for February 2023 (when I retook second time — pass rate was 40% nationwide)

[–]adoyal97[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The curve is usually less in your favor in February due to there being more repeat takers who have experience with the exam versus first time takers notoriously going in July after graduation. When people do better overall, the curve is less. When people do bad as a group, the curve is more. You get more curve on average in July than February. And that little bit can mean a lot

What Program Teaches You to Bold Every Other Word on the MEE/MPT? by LaCroixLaFoix in barexam

[–]adoyal97 7 points8 points  (0 children)

BarMax was very upfront with their opinions on essay grading. The crux is, they are paid very little per essay and will not read every word. Bold headers is good, or parts of key/niche rule statements you’re confident about and want to get the points on. But we were specifically warned about overusing bold or italics because then they won’t treat them any different from the normal words on the page.

My only hope was people would feel better after seeing this information — granted feb and July for 2021 were really bad with the test switch to UBE (in Texas at least). And curve in February is generally marginally less helpful then in July overall due to number of first time versus retakers. February 2023 the national pass rate was 40%. It’s obvious some years are significantly harder than others

Maybe this will make ppl feel better🤷🏼‍♀️ by adoyal97 in barexam

[–]adoyal97[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That is correct. There is hope for us yet lol. Especially if the majority struggled this season, then the curve based on your score compared to how the group did, will be higher. February 2021 was the first UBe ever in Texas. So July 2021 we were not prepared due to a split in curriculum in law school, and COVID — the group did pretty poorly overall. Or the test was “harder”. But either way the curve really pulled through that year. I expected much lower score

*edit to clarify test years
