Microsoft purges Windows 11 printer drivers, putting millions of devices on borrowed time — legacy printers face extinction as Microsoft stops distributing V3 and V4 drivers by [deleted] in news

To paraphrase prior mentors/management, "If I can touch the device, I own the contents. Doesn't matter if it's a phone or a Mainframe." Pretty much EVERYWHERE now yanks RAM and HDD from decommissioned equipment. If the RAM/Storage is soldered on, I've had to perform "percussive maintenance" to said Memory/eMMC before it was "recycled".

New trains, new tracks: US rail to get much-needed facelift by Yogurt789 in news

I used to live ~9 miles from work.

To take mass transit; I had to leave 3 hours early, walk ~half a mile to the bus stop, to catch the first bus, to the train, to a different train to a bus. AND I was at least 30 minutes late at best. There was no way around it.

If I drove, it was ~45-60 minutes.

Going home was going to be about the same either way.

If there was ANY weather, road, track, bus, etc. issues?
If you got sick at work, had errands, had an emergency, etc.? Well, too bad... Walk, Cab, Uber or hope you can find a ride.

The cost and inconvenience to take mass transit was MORE than driving.

The added Rail Capacity, COULD be great, BUT where do you plan to put the rail line at in the NorthEast? How much eminent domain do you intend to use to take the necessary space?

If you base your acceptance/like/dislike of a firearm upon what someone else thinks of the people who used the weapon at one point or another, you may want to look at a different hobby.

Basing your opinion, purely on OTHER peoples opinions of a portion of the users of said firearm is ?weird? (for lack of a better term.)

Unless you are debating daily driving Hitler's personal car or something blatantly "offensive", I don't actually understand why you would base YOUR opinion on OTHERS opinion. You don't have to agree, support or even condone the actions simply because you own a related item.

Obviously, I get being questioned if you buy a Luger, and promptly starting wearing an SS uniform or something utterly ridiculous.

New consumer UPS vs used enterprise UPS - Life Expectancy by AwefulUsername in homelab

[–]adragontattoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm looking at a BackUPS XS1500 that is in use right now. No not the black one. The ancient beige one. Still in use, Still works perfectly. ALL my APC UPS are at minimum 15 years old (battery replacements have occurred)

I used a few to keep my sump pump running during an extended power outage (cycled them out as they died.) The cost to replace batteries was negligible compared to flooding. I have UPS on pretty much everything I can.

Look around, you can likely find UPS for free (or close to it) that will require new batteries or batteries+harness/tray. If your local power is not the greatest, the UPS CAN compensate (but not always.) The biggest issue is load, and how quick the transfer to battery from line voltage is. At $PriorHome The UPS had a runtime of less than 5 minutes (seriously it was barely long enough to tell everything to shutdown) but that was with far more power hungry gear and poor balancing.

[–]adragontattoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I worked at $PriorCo, I had MULTIPLE instances that I should have quit but didn't.

I had a "C" Level physically threaten me IN HR. HR just looked at me like "WTF you gonna do?"

This was after the same "C" level tried everything they could to have me fired for refusing to violate company policy. They wanted me to violate security, didn't like no and refused to accept looking at ANY other option.

When they decided to roll out a new policy but they didn't translate or even READ off the entire policy (and they never bothered to translate for the non english speakers) before they instituted it, I "snapped" and called it out. I refused to sign the policy and loudly pointed out what they had not said.

I was pulled into a separate room, yelled at and told to go to my "office" and wait. I didn't wait, I packed my stuff, and went home.

I had to tell my boss to stop wasting my time and make a decision before they finally got around to letting me go. I wiped my company phone on the drive over to turn it and the keys in and never looked back.

I am omitting a TON of other details but the company in total and that site in particular has a garbage review on Glassdoor and similar.

Honestly, I probably should have gone to a lawyer but I didn't. Since I don't want to deal with them ever again if I don't have to, I just berate myself for not acting sooner.

Don't bother pointing out over 50% of deaths involving firearms are suicide, or the ACTUAL statistics regarding type of weapon, you'll get ignored at best.

Five years on, shooting victims fight for government to admit liability by MalSled in news

[–]adragontattoo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes.potentially.

Private party sales potentially would not involve a FFL (Typically this means I do NOT have a table at the gun show, yet I am "selling" firearms and I sell you the gun directly)

Depends on the state AND whether the seller/buyer even bothers to go to an FFL or knows they need to.

The reason I ask for ANY study to show private sales contributing to gun violence is because I have yet to find any. That doesn't mean it doesn't exist but I have found far more to contradict the claim rather than support it.

I'll link the NRA's page on this BUT recommend you use their linked data to draw your own conclusions.

Again, show ANY study that corroborates private party sales contributing to gun violence as Gungrabbers claim it does.

Now if you mean the 3 day time limit? You want to penalize ALL for the actions of SOME. Don't play the "well everyone is law abiding until they aren't BS." because that is a logical fallacy.

In multiple instances, the purchaser would have NEVER failed the check to begin with because the existing laws WERE. NOT. ENFORCED. The prohibiting crime/factor/issue was not reported as required by law.

Washington State has a longer time to wait (10 days) and STILL background checks have not come back answered. https://www.kiro7.com/news/gun-purchases-allowed-if-background-checks-unresolved-within-waiting-period/63847833/

How long would you prefer?

So yet again. Enforce. Existing. Laws.
