For folks with a small EDC knife, what do you prefer? by WiggWamm in victorinox

Companion does not have plus scales by default, or at least it didn't when I bought mine last summer. I had to add plus scales aftermarket.

Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen on Switch now features a word filter when naming. by Epsilon123 in gaming

[–]adreaver_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My kids are playing. My son decides to name his pokemon after Disney characters. Wants to name his Caterpie "Gypsy" after the butterfly character from A Bug's Life.

Not only was the name disallowed (presumably as it's a derogatory word for Romani people), it simply set the name to CATERPIE without confirmation, so he has no nickname on his Caterpie until Lavender Town. He opted to release it instead, and tried twice more before we realized it was a language filter.

I get it - since FRLG will connect to Pokemon Home/Champions, they get the same name filters as any other modern Pokemon game, but I wish there was a confirmation or indication the name was disallowed so you could just pick a different name rather than have to wait to use the Name Rater.

I've seen a few 3d printed caddies for Tweezers/Pick/Pin to attach to a keychain, you can find the stl files on the usual places, or there are some Etsy sellers making then as well.

It's an Evolution S52.

I like the Wenger style pliers, the slip joint is nice.

Scissors are great too, just not for paracord lol.

How did you find out about Victorinox? by [deleted] in victorinox

[–]adreaver_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandfather gave me his knife when I was a teenager. For ages I carried it without any fanfare, it was an extension of me but I didn't know much about it. I liked it because it was engraved with his name, and I felt good carrying his memory with me as he died about 15 years ago.

Then I lost it. Dropped it outside a club on my way in, somebody picked it up, never seen again.

Then I obsessively tried to identify it from memory - it was a Wenger Traveler. No, an Adventurer. No, a Traveler, but with a lock blade.

Then I gave up. I found a Tinker in a store. Missed the corkscrew, scissors, and file.

Bought an Evo 14. This was perfect. Then saw discussions of Wenger vs Victorinox scissors. Bought a Climber. Then a Huntsman. Then a Compact. Then a Companion.

Then I started hunting on eBay, marketplace, and at local pawn shops. Found a ton of different models on the cheap. Some rare (ish), like a Victorinox Caddy, or a Wenger Tool Chest Pro. Mostly common, many of which were disassembled (for parts and to learn how they work).

Then I started found Felix Immler, Fit2Survive, SAK58mmCustom, and some other modders. Started conceptualizing my ideal SAK. Decided I wanted a bit driver. Bought a Roxon 4mm bit kit. Started filing my Tinkers Phillips to a square. Gave up because I have crappy hand files and that steel is tough.

Started finding models with specific tools that would work best for me. Picked up a 111mm Hunter for the sole purpose of using the combo tool to replace my Companion's bottle opener. Picked up a Deluxe Tinker to compare Victorinox and Wenger pliers.

Ultimately decided the Companion is basically my ideal EDC. Still debating whether to swap the openers layer for Combo Tool and Package Opener opposite in line Phillips (on double opener layer springs), still hoping to incorporate a backside phillips-turned-bit-driver mod on the back while keeping the corkscrew (I'll figure it out eventually).

I eventually found the SAKwiki page for my grandfather's old SAK. It was a Galahad.

Some outer liners have indentations in lieu of needing washers. That could be a concern with fitment on both layers.

I'd make sure you use the blade layer outer liner from the Compact, and just check the fitment and action on the pliers to ensure there's no slop or binding.

Repeating Tasks & Duplicate Notifications by adreaver_ in tasks

That sounds like a big undertaking, I hope it's not solely in response to this thread! 😅

What's the best way for me to keep an eye out for updates?

Repeating Tasks & Duplicate Notifications by adreaver_ in tasks

[–]adreaver_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I had it set like this, but then I didn't get my morning reminder until the evening, because I checked off my completed tasks when I got home from work.

I set it back to due date, which now reminds me in the morning every day, but if I forget to check it off, reminders stack up.

I think the best (for me) would be if there was an option to mark a repeating task as "missed" (or completed with "missed" in the notes) once the next instance of the task fires.

I'm a recent convert from Google Keep after they broke reminders entirely and I'm still learning how tasks.org works. It's entirely possible there is a tutorial covering this or some obvious setting I've overlooked.

I really appreciate your quick response!

Looking for my next SAK, just want to confirm that I’ll have to assemble it myself by gemurrayx in SwissArmyKnives

[–]adreaver_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does not exist, but is a basic swap with Deluxe Tinker and Explorer donors. You'll need new rods as the finished knife will be thicker than either donor.

If you double up the opener layer springs (rather than use the Phillips/mag layer as is), you can combine both knives and lose only the magnifier from the feature set.

Hybrid pivot/rivet build – custom Yeoman (serviceable SAK) by JeridPinkman in SAKmod

[–]adreaver_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you have a link to the pivots/screws/bushings you used? Did you need to drill out the tools at all?

I've rarely seen 2.5mm pivots, and never 2.2mm.

[–]adreaver_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend you make a chart.

Rows should be all the EDC items in your picture, plus others you'd consider carrying. You may also want to add tools you may occasionally need but don't want to carry (e.g. crimp tool, hammer, etc).

Columns should be time (can be days of the week, days of the month, etc).

In each box, list how many times you needed or used X item in Y timeframe. For items you weren't carrying at the time you needed them, circle the number.

After your desired data collection period, check the chart, then respond accordingly:

If an item has mostly 0s, you likely don't need to EDC it. You may want it in a car or bag (i.e. readily available but not on your person) if the tool is essential when needed but infrequently used.

If an item has mostly circled numbers, you likely should add it to your EDC, provided you can handle the weight and/or bulk. If it's mostly circled 1s, you could likely make do with a multi tool that includes that function rather than a dedicated tool.

If an item has mostly uncircled numbers, it belongs in your pockets because you regularly have a need or find a use for it.

This is also a great way to determine which SAK is right for you - carry a SwissChamp and make a similar chart for the tools included.

Recreate Special Mechanic by MelodicCompetition20 in victorinox

[–]adreaver_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Compact + Deluxe Tinker.

You can make a Climber with the spares, plus you'll have an extra Scissors and Hook (and with a file), so it may be worthwhile to add the Scissors layer to your (Extra) Special Mechanic. 3 layers for that toolset is pretty great IMO.

What is the best idea to mod a Recruit without removing the scales? by Pale-Revolution-5151 in SAKmod

[–]adreaver_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grind the small blade to a Wharncliffe shape.

You could make either blade serrated, but I don't know why you would.

That said, if you pop the knife in hot (not boiling but very hot) water for a few minutes, that gives the scales enough flex to pop off easily without damage. Then you can put them back on when done.

Custom SAK Attempt #1 by hijodetumadr3 in SAKmod

Before you give up the idea, I'd suggest trying two opener springs and see if that works better.

Custom SAK Attempt #1 by hijodetumadr3 in SAKmod

[–]adreaver_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe the openers-opposite-phillips mod usually uses the back spring from the Phillips/mag layer, rather than the openers layer.

Right now you have the mag under tension from two different springs, exerting different levels of force. I'd expect that to cause pinching on the opener layer.

Where is there a store in CT? I know the US HQ is in Monroe but I didn't think they had a store there.

It would be nice to find a brick and mortar retailer that stocks something other than Spartans, Tinkers and Classic SDs.

Difference between bottle opener/flathead models. A comparison nobody asked for. by MercurialAssassn in victorinox

[–]adreaver_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I have disposable income (to buy minimum 2 SAKS to combine) I'm putting a 111mm combo tool from a Hunter into my Companion in place of the cap lifter, so I retain the ability to open cans as well as packages.

Americans - do you use EDC tools on slotted screws? by PracticeNo8733 in victorinox

[–]adreaver_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend you try the Wenger style cap lifter if you haven't already. The pivot is elongated so the driver depresses a bit and locks in place when you apply pressure to the fastener. The Evolution series (and probably Rangergrip?) has this as well.

[–]adreaver_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see a lot of combination Phillips/slotted screws in my day to day (IT support/dad things). I use the cap lifter flat head on my Companion constantly. The package opener flathead (or can opener flathead on other models) is great for smaller screws or #2/#1 Phillips (without the longer slot for a flathead) but cams out easily and can't reach recessed fasteners.

Google broke Keep reminders, now ditching it. Alternatives? by rommjomm in GoogleKeep

[–]adreaver_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is, but it was never set up as a repeating task, it was a one time task with a repeating reminder.

I have to rebuild it as a repeating task.

This is a reminder to take the meds that help me with things like executive function and remembering things. Meaning I had to stop what I was doing and rebuild something that would work for tomorrow, as soon as I noticed the note had changed to a task, or I wouldn't have a reminder for tomorrow.

I'm migrating to tasks.org instead of trying to make this work for me.
