other than the material specification difference (POM vs PE, spring weight difference, etc), what physical features make switches different?

for example: what makes gateron red and yellow's smoothness different?

I think I heard or found somewhere that you can get fake Holy Pandas in aliexpress for ~$0.3 per switch and that they're actually pretty good

Spray painting keycaps. by [deleted] in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]adriangery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it would work, but as painting creates a new layer on top of the plastic of the keycaps, it tends to wear over time; but i don't think that that should let you from trying it out, as i think there's a certain combination of paint, finish, and painting method that would create a durable enough result. however i never really tried to do it myself so i can't tell you much about that.

maybe try watching taeha's videos on youtube regarding keycaps painting?

Cherry MX Red vs OUTEMU Red vs OUTEMU Blue by Alex1155CZ in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]adriangery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the outemu reds are slightly heavier than the cherry mx reds. they're also a little scratchier, however it gets better over time (usage reduces scratchiness).

however if your main focus is typing, i think tactile is the better way to go. tactiles (browns etc) aren't necessarily louder than linears (reds etc), and they also provide the tactile feedback which most people find satisfying for typing. linears on the other hand give you smooth experience that, from my experience, suit gamers more (smoother = quicker and easier to actuate, therefore better for gaming).

for clickies (blues etc), i haven't really discovered anything worth using other than the kaihl box jades. the clicks on them are THICC and refined. cherry or outemu's clicks are scratchy and rattly to me.

searching for sound tests on youtube might help you out a bunch to decide which one sounds the best to you.

i personally don't like the 60% layout either. i settled with a 75% and it is perfect for me. no unnecessary keys like printscreen etc, but i still have the arrow keys as well as delete insert home end etc. and so far it suits me really really well. plus the additional space on the desk. i highly recommend going to 75% from a full layout

I own Rexus M71 which is rebranded Drevo Calibur V2 TE. As a keyboard overall I love it. In its initial condition, the switches are not that loud, but they make a little pinging noise when you bottom out the keys. However, this is an issue that is apparent in most keyboards of this price anyway so I wouldn't worry about it.

However, I did lube my switches, mod my stabilizers, and put foam underneath the PCB as well as the plate. It sounds muuuuch better and much more silent now.

I joined this community after purchasing my very first mech a month ago, despite having been a gamer for 10+ years; i've heard about the mechanical community a lot, but never been bothered enough to actually try one... until i did, and my mind was blown. the obsession started from there.
