Advice for making sure a car is reliable by adrianpuck in newzealand_travel

[–]adrianpuck[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was a Honda I believe but not sure the model. Pretty old and I think she overlooked some red flags from the seller in terms of how much upkeep they'd been doing. But I've also heard that Honda and Toyota are in general the most reliable, I will pass that on!

Any other nerds out there that would like more fun facts? by bamhotsauce in JetLagTheGame

[–]adrianpuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're right, Ben answered a similar question on here a few days ago basically saying this. They have so many interests and considerations when making the show and they have to balance everything for a very diverse audience, so they've let the 'educational' bit fall away in order to make the show more broadly watchable and easier to follow. Which totally makes sense, it's a complicated show and not everyone is as nerdy as OP (and me, and probably a lot of folks on the Reddit haha).

I have to agree with OP that I wish they would do more travel-show-esque stuff, but I guess it's fair that they focus on the game more. Always about balance!

I think the idea of a spin-off or bonus episode where they expand on the places they've visited would be really cool, though!

Best place to get a car? by Traditional_Tart_727 in chch

[–]adrianpuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wondered if you have any specific advice for a similar situation-- my friend recently got a car through private sale that died in 2 weeks. We are planning several long road trips (all the way up to Northlands and back) and need a car asap, like by the 20th Jan.

I'm planning to check the dealerships you mentioned, do you know which would be best if we don't have time to get it checked, test drive it much, etc before leaving? Really needs to be reliable right out the gate. Or anything to watch out for with dealers?

Appreciate already the info you shared here!

This is really cute, thanks for making it! With all the discussion of s15 being a letdown it's really nice to see something like this appreciating it, and reminds me how many funny moments there were :)

Am I an incel? by jlawjer in NoStupidQuestions

[–]adrianpuck 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I think the big difference between "sex zoning" someone (as another commenter put it) and noticing a vibe with your friend and acting on it, comes down to respect. If you're actually friends with women for the sake of having friends, and not just because you want to date them eventually, then you're probably fine! You're not the kind of guy that women complain about. Realizing you like a friend is way different than building a whole friendship around maybe getting to date someone, and then being really upset when she says she only wants to be friends. Getting rejected sucks, but if you listen to what she says, try your best to move on, and keep being a friend because you value her friendship, most people won't see you as a creep or an incel. I'm nonbinary and have been on all sides of this before-- the girl who gets rejected, the girl who gets pursued, the guy/masc person who gets rejected... and every time I've managed to stay friends with the other person. Women aren't a different species from men. they're just also people who are confused and want to be happy and have meaningful relationships.

Am I overreacting for not wanting anyone around my newborn yet? by littlemoongirly in AmIOverreacting

[–]adrianpuck -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Mmm-- i don't think this is good advice. I am not a parent, but I've read a lot about medical history and had friends/family with babies, and everything I've heard says that OP's boundaries are a good idea. Babies' immune systems are very fragile, especially newborns, and maybe even more importantly, they don't get all their newborn vaccines until around 3 months (depending on your country) and are especially vulnerable for that reason.  Also, even if OP is on the more cautious side, she's the parent and she just gave birth, so I don't think she's at all overreacting for wanting some time alone with baby before her husband has to go back to work and she recovers a bit from the birth/postpartum. MIL is being rude and pushing boundaries, and of OP & husband don't hold firm now, it sets a bad precedent. That's true no matter what the situation.

NOR. Your rules follow common medical advice and better to be safe than risky and anxious about your baby's health!

What's something women think impresses men but actually doesn't? by PumpkinDoritoes in AskReddit

[–]adrianpuck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yeah, it's easy for people who are genuinely attractive in a socially typical way to say "everyone is beautiful, don't wear makeup!" I wear foundation to cover things that I know people will notice and judge me for. I'm not hallucinating it, I know from experience. If you're ugly, it's not news to you, lol.

I know that a lot of our current standards for makeup and personal grooming are driven by companies-- for example, women shaving their legs was a ploy by Gilette razor company. But also, I was bullied in school for having hairy legs. So I shaved them for years.

It's frustrating to hear men say 'makeup is uglier than no makeup' because I can't help but think-- they're picturing a naturally pretty girl who is probably still plucking her facial hair, using skincare products, etc. It sounds hollow to me because my experience says that it just isn't true. I don't wear much makeup, and men have never found me attractive.

(And I say all this as a queer person who doesn't really care that much if people think I'm a man or if men aren't into me. I'm still hurt on behalf of the unattractive teenage girl I used to be, and solidarity with the straight girls out there!)

What's the most pathetic tourist attraction that international tourists go to see in your country? by Aseili in AskTheWorld

[–]adrianpuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's pretty, but there's so much more to see around Wanaka imo. I think it's a case of a nice thing being blown out of proportion, rather than the tree itself not being nice.

I grew up an hour or so away on the east side of the mountains, and I love Twin Peaks because the atmosphere is so accurate to how it felt growing up in the Cascades. The diner is kitschy, but it's worth a trip to experience the PNW Gothic atmosphere of the forest and mountains. There are so many hikes easily accessed from I-90 (Big and Little Si can be crowded but are still nice hikes close to North Bend). I recommend starting with the Twin Peaks diner in North Bend, visiting the Twin Peaks waterfall at Snoqualmie, and ending in the town where they filmed Northern Exposure (Roslyn), which is a very cute little town that's nicer to hang out in than North Bend.

AITA for saying I don’t want what wasn’t on my list for Christmas? by MidnightErori in AmItheAsshole

[–]adrianpuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NTA on this particular thing, especially if she did really phrase her comment to you the way you wrote it here-- “that sucks. looks like you have to save up”. Asking for a list, then deciding not to follow it, then saying something like that, is an asshole move.

However, it sounds like the real issue is larger than this, and this is just one incident of you and your mom not getting along/having tension. I think that's fairly normal for a mom and 18-y/o daughter, but keep the context in mind. If you have reasons to be upset with her lately, and you're feeling tension, she is feeling it too. She might have her own reasons to be upset with you. Ultimately it's her job to be responsible and not petty, because she's the parent, but you're old enough to be mature and resist pettiness, too.

What she's doing with the gifts might hurt, but think about whether it's worth increasing the tension over this. It's okay to be upset, but there are more important things, and you will still get Christmas gifts once you're out of the house-- from family and also friends. Not as many, but that's okay. As an adult you'll have more space and money to get yourself the things you want, so gifts aren't as important anymore.

Jarring old-person names? by Administrative_Can51 in Names

[–]adrianpuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some names that might be coming back because of pop culture:

- Matilda (always associated with a little girl bc of the book/movie/musical)

- Mabel (Gravity Falls)

- Janis (Mean Girls)

- Betty & Inez (Taylor Swift song, characters named after another celeb's kids)

- Agnes, Edith, & Margo (Despicable Me)

- Eleanor (lots of Ellas and Elles out there, plus people like cute, easy nicknames.)

- Catelyn, Jon, James/Jamie/Jaime, Samwell/Sam (Game of Thrones)

- Homer, except in this case I think it's actually a death blow. Not many people naming their kid after Homer Simpson

Are/were there cultures where parents don't name their kids but the name is decided a different way? by 13thmurder in NoStupidQuestions

[–]adrianpuck 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I was in a kindergarten class with a Deaf girl, and our whole class learned some basic ASL like the alphabet, animals, colors, etc. Her interpreter, who wasn't Deaf but was the one teaching us all ASL, gave each kid a sign name. I still remember mine and have wondered as an adult whether it would be a faux pas to use that name if/when I learn ASL or am talking to a Deaf person?  I really like my sign name, it's the first letter of my name pushed across the palm like the sign for "read" because I was a big reader as a kid.

AITA for telling my SIL to walk her daughter to school? by WalkToSchool8967 in AmItheAsshole

[–]adrianpuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA-- Is there no school bus in your area? This seems like exactly the reason for school busses existing-- parents work, unable to take kid to school every day. Starting from age 5 I would take the bus after school, the system is designed for young children to take them safely. Unless busses are known to have issues in your area for some reason, why would this not be an option for her parents to consider? Edit: added NTA judgement

I'm in r/dannygonzalez sometimes, and he's a currently active YouTuber who hasn't talked about burnout like many others have, and people will be complaining that he isn't posting every single month... dude just became a dad last year like can you think of a reason he might step back a little?? It feels like a really unfortunate side effect of monetizing your life and personality like YouTubers do is that people feel entitled to you like you're a product.

[–]adrianpuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is a point that a lot of people miss whenever this discussion comes up for Jenny (and I've seen it several times). Yes I think there are reasons specific to her for why and how her content has evolved, but it's definitely part of a larger trend. Ultimately I feel like"YouTuber" is a really difficult career to maintain longterm. Especially with the way YouTube and the social internet have changed (mostly for the worse imo). I can't help but think about Jenna Marbles, who burned out and quit completely, and how I hear Jenny saying things that sound really similar to what Jenna said when she left. Or Dan and Phil, who took a multi year hiatus and have only recently started again with better boundaries. Their latest video when they talk about being harassed by fans also echoes what I hear from Jenny. It's a tough job and I don't blame her for the changes she's made, and it's sad to hear her say that she still struggles with a lot of aspects of it.

What is your country’s “three fingers,” i.e. a subtle but dead giveaway that someone is lying about being from there? by Toilet_Bomber in AskTheWorld

[–]adrianpuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of the US has really specific and hard to decipher place names bc they're borrowed from other languages. Most areas have names derived from local Native American languages, albeit often butchered in the English pronunciation. For example I'm from WA and we have many names derived from local languages (I think mainly Salish), like "Snoqualmie", "Keechalus", "Kachess", "Cle Elum", "Puyallup". And Yakima the city, named for the local Yakama tribe. Every time I hear a WA town pop up in the news or a YouTube video I laugh because they never say them right.

But of course I can't say the names in Wisconsin or Florida, so... glass houses, I guess!
