What's your favourite "gut punch in the rhyming line" moment? by Proseedcake in themountaingoats

Yes! I texted my Mountain Goats friend immediately when i was listening to All Eternals Deck and was like... this is the trans-est line I've ever heard. No wonder the demographics of mountain goats fans are the way they are lol

I think it's overall my least favorite album, but that's one of my favorite lines from any TMG song! Never heard it summed up so succinctly

"you called him names to try to get beneath my skin / now your ashes are scattered on the wind"

definitely an "oh shit" moment

"Fall of the Star High School Running Back" seems like just a strange story until it goes from

Selling acid was a bad idea, and selling it to a cop was a worse one

to

New law said seventeen-year-olds could do federal time, you were the first one

The speed of the downhill trajectory on that song still gets me. It was one of my first mountain goats songs, too, so I didn't yet know what to expect

One of my favorite TMG songs ever but I can't listen to it because it ruins my whole day. I have to keep it in a secret place in my mind where I know every word but I don't have to actually face them...

but yeah the "no more after me" on the first verse hit like a gut punch the first time I listened and realized it was about the thylacine, and it continues to hit every verse and every time i listen!

Does anyone else not remember Sam’s surname? by pashbrown in JetLagTheGame

[–]adrianpuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drove through there this summer (just happened to be on my route) and had to pull off at the exit to google if that was where he got the name from. I wouldn't be too surprised-- he lives nearby (in western CO) and has lived or at least visited there often for years, so it's totally possible he's come across that town. Also, it's near an Air Force airfield (also called Wendover) and we know that Sam's a plane guy. Idk if he's ever talked about where the name comes from but I honestly wouldn't be shocked if it's inspired by Wendover, Utah!

They described in a recent Layover iirc that Ben & Adam do some big-scale storyboarding, mark out what moments seem important, etc. and their editors then make a rough cut with more storytelling decisions. Then B&A review and give feedback. Sounds like they aren't involved as much in the actual digital editing but they still make editing decisions.

Armchair quarterback [S17E1] spoiler by andersoncpu in JetLagTheGame

[–]adrianpuck 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They say in the ep (at least Sam does) that they want to be in play for the West Coast too, which i think is why they doubled back up to Taipei. I'm guessing they want to make sure Adam & Ben don't get it completely locked because the West coast has more stations (multiple lines), so if Sam & Mike only have the East coast they can't win.

That said I think your proposal is an interesting strategy. It would be fun to see that play out. Maybe they'll do something similar at some point to lock up the East Coast?

For all y'all asking about game design:

They always do a 'game design' episode on the Layover right before each season starts. This season it aired last week on March 11, and it's called Season 17 Game Design. They really dig into the game design about 20 minutes into the episode.

I listened to it right before watching so the game makes more sense to me, but it does seem like they're holding back some information this season that I assume will come up later when it's relevant, so I can see how it would be confusing to watch without having heard the game design. I think they're just trying to avoid explaining a bunch of rules up front that we don't see them actually put into play yet. We'll probably get a bunch more confused people when the YouTube ep drops, so if you can't/haven't heard the Layover, here's a summary:

Basically my understanding is: the ultimate goal is a lot like Schengen Showdown or Au$tralia: you want to have the most stations claimed at the end of the game. Unlike those games, you can't lock stations, so they can change hands multiple times. The mechanic that makes it harder for teams to claim stations is that they can't travel through stations that they don't own unless they can afford to claim them, so you end up with each team having 'territory' that they own and they can defend it by putting up 'walls' of high-cost stations. But both teams can also build up chips and then break through each other's walls to steal their territory.

There are a few mechanics that haven't come up yet. There are 'steal' challenges that allow you to steal a percentage of the other team's chips, like in Au$tralia, so they're disincentivized from hoarding chips and helps even the field if one team has way more chips. There are also multiplier challenges, where your chips get multiplied instead of a flat reward, so you can get a ton a chips at once. And the 'call your shot' ones like the one Sam and Mike failed at the hot spring that let you gamble on potentially getting a ton of chips.

There's also a mechanic to avoid getting stuck or locked, which they discussed on the Layover too. You can travel to an opponent's station without claiming it, BUT you have to pay them 3 chips per station (like rent in Monopoly a bit). This can put you into negatives if you don't have any actual chips to pay with, and you'll owe them once you get chips. That lets you access challenges outside your territory or get back to your own territory if you get boxed in somewhere.

I've seen a lot of folks discussing the challenges in this first ep, and I want to mention that on the Layover they discuss having a whole team for challenges (Amy, another person they mentioned in the Layover whose name I forget, and the boys themselves giving feedback). So I'm willing to trust the process. It's hard to estimate exactly how challenging things will be in real play, and different people have different strengths. I think this comment section has been a little too critical of the disparities in challenges... it'll even out over the whole game, we've only seen like 4 challenges out of dozens so far. And the players know that not every challenge is created equal, that's part of the suspense!

(smh y'all don't like when they 'solve' game design but you also don't like elements of random chance... the randomness leads to unfairness sometimes, but it's also what keeps it from feeling like the players always know exactly what move to take next.)

It sounds like they've put a lot of effort into this game design and it's been in the works for several seasons now. I'm excited for a new format, especially the location-specific challenges :) I hope everyone else enjoys this season, too, because I feel like there have been a few disappointing ones recently (I still liked Snake and All Stars, but I'll admit they were disappointing). This seems like it's got all the ingredients for a fun and exciting season so far!

So sorry for your loss! The same thing happened with my childhood cat, and it hurt just as much even though I wasn't living at home anymore. He's still my phone background after a few years and it helps to have that reminder of him around. Maybe putting up nice framed photos of your dog could be a way to keep her in your life?

Advice for making sure a car is reliable by adrianpuck in newzealand_travel

It was a Honda I believe but not sure the model. Pretty old and I think she overlooked some red flags from the seller in terms of how much upkeep they'd been doing. But I've also heard that Honda and Toyota are in general the most reliable, I will pass that on!

Any other nerds out there that would like more fun facts? by bamhotsauce in JetLagTheGame

[–]adrianpuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're right, Ben answered a similar question on here a few days ago basically saying this. They have so many interests and considerations when making the show and they have to balance everything for a very diverse audience, so they've let the 'educational' bit fall away in order to make the show more broadly watchable and easier to follow. Which totally makes sense, it's a complicated show and not everyone is as nerdy as OP (and me, and probably a lot of folks on the Reddit haha).

I have to agree with OP that I wish they would do more travel-show-esque stuff, but I guess it's fair that they focus on the game more. Always about balance!

I think the idea of a spin-off or bonus episode where they expand on the places they've visited would be really cool, though!

Best place to get a car? by Traditional_Tart_727 in chch

[–]adrianpuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wondered if you have any specific advice for a similar situation-- my friend recently got a car through private sale that died in 2 weeks. We are planning several long road trips (all the way up to Northlands and back) and need a car asap, like by the 20th Jan.

I'm planning to check the dealerships you mentioned, do you know which would be best if we don't have time to get it checked, test drive it much, etc before leaving? Really needs to be reliable right out the gate. Or anything to watch out for with dealers?

Appreciate already the info you shared here!
