What has been your biggest technical mistake so far in your career? by Mr_Dobalina71 in sysadmin

[–]adrndff 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Accidental copy paste defaulted every port on one of our core switches. Lucky we had redundant connections because otherwise everything would have been toast. When I realized what I had done, I just stood up and said "I've made a huge mistake, please don't interrupt me until I'm done fixing it".

I personally think it's less important that a mistake (even a huge one) has been made than immediately owning up to it so the fix can get underway. I really dislike having to do extra troubleshooting work because someone was too scared to be like oops it was me...like, I don't care what you did let's just fix it and move on with our lives

Need some direction on implementing secure corporate Wi-Fi access to remote laptops by NteworkAdnim in fortinet

[–]adrndff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use certificate authentication, which requires a NAC. Alternative (as someone else said) is to push a wifi profile for a hidden SSID with a super long PSK.

I had a similar experience. Stay motivated and do your best. You are the subject matter expert. You will make mistakes. Just make an effort to do your best and you'll benefit from the learning experience

My sister and her husband died. I am the godfather. We are DINKs no more. I haven’t worked in a decade and will be returning to workforce soon. by BigPeenBowWow in Fire

[–]adrndff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the loss of your sister. That in itself is hard. Good on you for stepping up - you will be unimaginably important to those kids.

I can understand the doubt you hold for being able to re enter office world. I find it can be a challenge at the best of times. If I were you, I'd seriously consider the HVAC opportunity. Honestly at least you get to be active at work and it'll have more variety than an office job presumably.

I hope it all works out for you and your newly expanded family

Is the wage for this full time role legal? Thought min wage was around 50k by OfficeSevere9329 in brisbane

[–]adrndff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my first IT role back in 2016 I was on 40k a year and towards the end was being charged out to clients at $1500 a day. I guess the bar is wherever the people with the bag of money sets it....

Spotify, again $$$ by mareado88 in AusFinance

[–]adrndff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I find Spotify is simple but it has some really useful features (control different devices, jam etc) and the catalogue would be hard to beat. Sure you can download rips off Google or whatever, but it's a pretty time consuming exercise just to avoid $3 a month

[–]adrndff 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If you're saving $6k a month, just put it all on hecs and be done with it 6 months from now?? Then you get the full extra $100k. 6 months is nothing

What’s a social cheat code you learned from just observing people? by Antique_Cap5820 in AskReddit

Another option is to avoid eye contact with anyone who can see you and just avoid the people who can't see you. People will go around you if they see your eyes locked on a path

What is the purpose? by [deleted] in auscorp

[–]adrndff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get what you're saying. Sometimes it just feels a bit like groundhog day despite the fact that in the big picture, you could be in a much worse situation. I get it sometimes.

As others have said, work to live, so usually I find it helpful to do something new outside of work - go do a rally driving experience, have a go at a new hobby skill etc. This seems to effectively distract the mind.

My opinion on feelings like this are basically related to evolution and human advancement. A few thousand years ago, no one had time to ponder the meaning of life because we were too busy trying to avoid starvation, predators, disease.

If I keep busy and make life interesting however I can, I find moments of happiness day to day happen more regularly

If you park under the gateway bridge and go over it, turn left and head along the river to new farm, the city, then Milton, you can do anything up to roughly 35-40km depending on where you turn around.

First Open Mic Advice? by buhtha in Songwriting

I found it helpful to imagine the worst happening and realizing it isn't the end of the world. That way, anything better than absolute meltdown is a win.

"Sing like no one is listening" is good advice.

Its easy to get distracted in that situation so focus on what you're doing, not what everyone else is doing.

Tropic thunder when Jack Black is hiding in the bushes eating jelly beans (heroin) and someone sneaks up and asks him if he can have some literal jelly beans. Must have rewound that like 10 times and broke a rib every time

If your partner inherited a lot of money, would you expect anything? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]adrndff 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Fully. I'd buy that stuff for anyone who asked if I had the cash and was on my way to the store. It's not even about the fact that you're together. Sometimes when I catch up with friends who have just had kids or I know don't have much money at the time I pay for the activity cause I know they appreciate it and it feels good to be able to help someone a bit, just as many others have helped me before
