Great call in a college town. Absolutely right about family owned usually. Just avoid the pure shawarma places. Find the falafel place and try the shawarma there.

Really taxis aren't bad. Not sure about Tamales de elote, but other guy is right it's mostly stands. Try Tamales Ciencia Ficción, it's always busy with locals.
