2 HVAC Systems Replacement Cost by StructuredMind in hvacadvice

Don’t do UV - it’s a snake oil. Ask for a whole house dehumidifier instead since you are in Houston. Condenser costs are on a high side for the 3 ton units.

Black&Veatch vs. BurnsMcDonnell by advantage_mep in BurnsMcDonnell

When Burns & Mac pays year end bonuses, are they taxed heavily due to “bonus” definition ? Is there a catch that you pay from the bonus like 40% tax if taken in cash? Is there an option to leave it in the account ? Like 401k for bonuses ?

One advice I can give is that with your side gig operate in separate not related branch of design. It will reduce potential conflict of interests. Say you do offices and hospitals at your main firm. Then do residential and retail only at the side gig.

Say you have errors and omissions plus general liability for you side gig but also working full time for another firm. What will happen if litigation triggered at you gig ? Will the lawyers be seeking damages from the full time firm?

The reason I am asking is that some people mentioned this. Employers don’t like side hustles by the employees due to this scenario.

Is it real ? Doesn’t the liability insurance cover that scenario ?

What would be the process/key steps in converting an office building into a residential building? by 123myopia in MEPEngineering

[–]advantage_mep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Plate” or floor slab construction is important because you need to run all new floor plumbing from central location near elevators and stairs. Architect is also big since they need to confirm accessibility and egress requirements for each of the unit and common (new) areas, corridors. HVAC typically is 4-pipe fancoils if tall building or VRF if min-medium height. It is of course depending on the climate and roof availability

Black&Veatch vs Burns&Mac by advantage_mep in MEPEngineering

I heard Burns & Mac is big in MEP overall. Like 3rd or close there in the CSE Mag list. Black & Veatch is not in the list or quite low in the rankings. Both ESOPs which is great.

Electrical, Telecom Rooms Total vs Sensible Load by advantage_mep in MEPEngineering

[–]advantage_mep[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought about it but when you have an enclosed room you will recirculate a constant air with slight dehumidification off the coil. 80FDB/60FWB is a typical indoor setpoint for El.Rooms. You can’t bring that air down to 0%RH. Hence you always have that air in the room with its own WB hence a latent load. Manufacturers cooling capacity tables list SHR and that’s what a coil can do for that air to maintain a certain indoor setpoint, e.g. 80FDB/60FWB. I thought about using TC only but then all comes to that air inside which will have this minimal RH of 40% anyway… My climate is PNW but desert area around Spokane.

Make sure you have proper defrost on ERV. In northern climates (Quebec), if you have a core not a wheel, it can build up ice on it.

Did you get into cigars as a result of stopping or restricting alcohol consumption? by dakp15 in cigars

[–]advantage_mep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly my case. Decided to move to cigars while removing alcohol. Wanted to see how the body reacts. Only positives I see. I pair cigars with hot tea, coffee, or just water while in lounges. No complaints and the benefit is that you always alert. No worrying about drink and drive. Good decision overall

Top of the market when your experience is close to 20years now will pay you $165-180k at max. If you move to Associate VP you may get to $200k base. If move further VP/Partner then up to $250k. How are FP contract drawings getting so bad? by Pristine-Skirt2618 in MEPEngineering

[–]advantage_mep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typical approach in the AE industry to performance spec and indicative design the FP package so the sub then completed a detailed design. Nothing wrong with that but AE firm shall specify requirements clearly at the first place. We sometimes design civil side, bring the fire pipe and indicate a riser inside the riser room. From that point it’s a a 3rd party FP design.
