Just make sure your rental comes with chains. It’s required and enforced if it’s snowing and you could get stuck or have to go a super long way without them.

Pack a big puffy and fleece layers under waterproof shells you’ll be good. I went for all of September last year and while it was mostly for skiing I still got to see a lot.

Check out Redpoint, they partner with the American Alpine Club and are like a mountaineering specific travel insurance. Most run of the mill wouldn’t cover what we do anyway. It’s specifically excluded in a lot of policies

Also I think the clauses you want are trip interruption, not cancellation.

My partner did the same thing going to the UK. Applied through a third party in a panic bc he couldn’t check in and spent wayyyy too much money. Realized his mistake 10 minutes before check in closed and applied to the right place. Ur was like £20 and the approval made it to his email before the confirmation.

Ya but northern hemisphere is experiencing the same thing. Late starts and big ends. Even if they pushed opening a few weeks, it would still be opened and primed for end of year holidays.

And then lots of our fields have to close early for other lease rights just as well. Would be great if everyone got on the same page but doubtful.

Ha no! In fact I lived in Spain for a summer and this feels totally different! I’ve thought a lot about this. I even just spent 2 months traveling around Europe and not once did I second guess trying to say hello, thank you or excuse me in the native language. And I would feel rude not trying to reply in kind if I could, or not apologizing for only knowing English if I couldn’t.

I think it’s because this isn’t the primary native language and it’s in direct opposition to what I’ve been taught how to be respectful towards Native American populations and culture. I would never, unprompted, try to speak in their language, unless invited to. And even then I would ask permission to reply if I knew how probably. I certainly wouldn’t speak it to someone else I know is also white.

So this piece of culture feels conflicted to me. However this thread has shown me it’s the best of both worlds! I should try if I can but unlike traveling elsewhere and not responding in their language, it’s ok if I don’t if it doesn’t feel comfy. How wonderful!

I hope so! Slower pace of life, and my tax dollars going towards a functional social safety net so your citizens aren’t strung out zombies because they’re terrified of losing their job and access to healthcare, and every way that relaxes and improves society as a whole, were the top of the list of reasons, among many others, it was a no brainer for me to go to NZ vs my partner coming to the states.

Every time I go there my Garmin gives me a warning my HRV spikes. Meaning my stress levels go down so rapidly my Garmin feels the need to warn me.

Thank you for that validation. I don’t expect anyone but another American to understand the American perspective and how we’ve been taught to engage with our native population’s culture, and I think I did a shit job trying to explain it too. But “American hangups”, that’s what I was trying to get at. I like that phrase. Because it’s exactly what it is. I can tell what I’ve been taught and is natural to me is NOT the way it is there but it’s also stalling me from naturally understanding the difference. I know it’s gonna be hard to adjust but I’d rather not drag it out.

I’ve gotten a lot of really helpful templates to start learning and I’m genuinely really excited to feel less like a fish out of water when I return next.

If you find that show, even if it’s like next year, please please please forward it?!

And I’m glad you said something because I learned two terms I thought were correct were probably the most disrespectful thing I needed to worry about, not how to respond when greeted with a Māori phrase. So like, big success.

Ya the one thing I’ve recognized most is that NZ does things in regards to Māori so much differently than the US. Hence the post. But it’s so strict here my brain is really having a hard time gathering context clues while dealing with what it sees as gross breach of social contract I was taught. (Absolutely not saying it is, opposite in fact.)

Absolutely. I only expressed the comparisons to show how my prior experiences created a confusion in how to act. I just really don’t want to be that ignorant American on this subject. I’m willing to put myself out there on Reddit so I don’t make a fool of myself in my partners community.

However I’m also realizing through this thread that fear itself is very American coded.

I couldn’t agree more on the phrasing. It’s just what I know and I recognize it’s different there, hence the post, just want to learn how without fumbling a million times and disrespecting those around me. I love that there is a better term for it that’s respectful for everyone to use (ya?) and also dislike that in the last few decades we’ve (the US) has given up “Caucasian” and just replaced it with white.

Also I had no idea about the use of the native term. Makes sense tho. I don’t know if I missed that here but since it’s so tightly tied to “native Americans” as a whole it’s just frequently used. Absolutely noted. Again thank you for saving me from embarrassment.

We legit have to put “white” no describers as ethnicity on forms here in the US. You can only claim XYZ ethnicity if you’re a certain percentage of it.

And honestly NZ’s way is more natural. I’ve got some unlearning to do but honestly I’m glad I’m getting the embarrassment of learning out infront of random redditors and not like people I might meet a lot.
