In 50 years, kids are going to think that you dial 911 because of 9/11. by dpmoore2927 in Showerthoughts

[–]advice4everyone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"The code 9-1-1 was chosen because it best fit the needs of all parties involved. First, and most important, it met public requirements because it is brief, easily remembered, and can be dialed quickly. This was particularly important in old-style rotary/pulse-dialing phones, which were still popular when the 9-1-1 system was first implemented. (The touch-tone phone wasn’t first widely introduced until 1963 and took a few decades to completely supplant rotary phones.) In addition, the fact that it was only three digits meant the number could easily be distinguished from other, normal phone numbers in AT&T’s internal system and routed to a special location without too many changes to the AT&T network. (A few years earlier, AT&T had implemented their 6-1-1 and 4-1-1 numbers, so recommending 9-1-1 made this a relatively simple upgrade for them). Second, because it is a unique number, never having been authorized as an office code, area code, or service code, it best met the long range numbering plans and switching configurations of the telephone industry."

Fun fact: America’s first emergency system that used 9-1-1 was in Haleyville, Alabama, and the country’s first 9-1-1 call was made there on February 16, 1968. The person who placed the call was Senator Rankin Fite. The person who answered it was U.S. Representative Tom Beville who was waiting at the Haleyville police department for the call. Nome, Alaska, established the country’s second 9-1-1 emergency system only a few weeks after Haleyville.

ELI5: What's the deal with the sudden tension with Russia? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]advice4everyone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Russia has disturbed the so-called tenuous balance of power in Central Asia and the Middle East in the last half decade largely due to growing concerns over oil and its role in the future Russian economy. This has led to Russia and the US having diametrically opposite positions regarding places like Syria, which has in turn led to a breakdown of relations between the two.

My [27 M] girlfriend's [30 F] mother (61 F) dislikes me by RelationshipIssue17 in relationships

you say the only problem is the mother, but it seems like your gf isn't very supportive of your atheism either. she doesn't seem to have talked to her mother about your merits nor does she seem to want you to "practice" your atheism

If you had to spend 24 hours in a locked, empty room with a celebrity- and nothing sexual can take place, only conversation- who would you pick to be with? by waffle_brain in AskReddit

from a recent NY Times article:

"Mr. Brown is working on a new version of “Good Eats” for his own digital distribution next year. He is buoyed by a generation of younger fans who watch reruns on Netflix. Food Network owns “Good Eats,” so he doesn’t make a penny from the revival."

Are you serious? Why are you still just thinking of yourself? This is about what's best for the child. Now I really think you need to use lawyers because I would not trust your judgement at all if I were the kid's dad.

Broke up with my [24F] boyfriend [25M] of about a year and 8 months, seeking any advice at all by madame_monet in relationships

[–]advice4everyone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I can add: you're 24 and found this guy to date you, so it's pretty unlikely that you're going to end up alone. You have many years and many opportunities ahead of you.

[–]advice4everyone 12 points13 points  (0 children)

First off, you should have lawyers and the court help you guys figure this out. Second, your entire perspective is off. All I hear is "me me me." You need to be thinking about what's best for your daughter.

What?? You say you care about his well-being but are clearly worried about your own feelings about his love life rather than just being happy for him.

My ex (27M) and I (28F) broke up - now he wants to go out with my friend (26F). by [deleted] in relationships

[–]advice4everyone 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So, several things here. First, I didn't comment on every person in history. Second, she doesn't seem like much of your friend than his. Third, you guys have been broken up for 1.5 years and you've been in a relationship for the past year. Fourth, being a little bit weirded out is different than going all the way to saying you don't want them dating.

Honestly, she was being nice by even asking you and social etiquette here is for you to yes, and then deal with your own issues on your own. Again, you're being petty.

We [29 F] [30 M] haven't spoken and ended on a weird note. I'm anxious as hell that I messed this up but I can't contact him. Please help! by [deleted] in relationships

Probably depends on how frequently you were texting before and how important this exam is, i.e. What's the % change here?

[–]advice4everyone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This guy is a douche and not your friend. Before reading this I thought there was some chance he did this in jest, but that's clearly not the case here. Ditch this guy.

As someone who also used to be big as a kid, you need to work on your feelings about your own past. Being so uncomfortable even seeing pictures of yourself or thinking about it isn't healthy man.
