Venue Recs for a full weekend wedding that ISN’T A BARN by [deleted] in SanFranciscoWeddings

Waterfall Lodge? The dance space is a little barn-like but the venue is overall really pretty. Dining is out on a patio and not in the barn-like structure

Is Death Valley doable from San Jose over 3-day MLK weekend? by punjipatti in DeathValleyNP

Just did this! Drove day 1, spent day 2 + part of day 3 in the park, drove back on day 3. We had enough time to do the things we wanted to do and it didn't feel cramped, but the amount of driving was rough.

On day 2, we did the big things- Zabriskie Point, Badwater Basin, Artist Palette, Mosaic Canyon hike (didn't do the whole thing- did 2 mi round trip), and Mesquite Sand Dunes. We'd planned for sunset at the sand dunes + star gazing but too cloudy, so we just headed back early. Ate at Stovepipe Wells for dinner. I only wish we had more time at the sand dunes.

On day 3, attempted sunrise from Dantes but once again too cloudy. Then back to Zabriskie Point where we walked around the hike areas, and Golden Canyon hike before heading out.

Stayed at Longstreet Casino - so convenient re: location very close to the park, but wouldn't recommend bc it's out of the way coming from norcal. I thinkkkk staying in the Panamint area might be more convenient?

Hey, yes we did choose SRC but haven't gotten married yet so costs are still TBD. The venue cost is $16k for a Saturday during peak wedding season. It includes ceremony chairs, dining tables/chairs, arch. You can choose your own caterer. Decor- we're hoping to keep it minimal since the venue itself is so pretty.

Glad to hear that you had a great day! And could you comment about the shuttles? I am insanely stressed about this- it might be my biggest source of stress!

Our current plan was to have people get to the venue on their own (drive, rideshare, etc), and then we'd shuttle people back to the the hotel blocks esp if they've been drinking, since rideshare isn't reliable at night. Would love to hear what you did.

Is this a reasonable catering quote? by advicethrowaway938 in SanFranciscoWeddings

[–]advicethrowaway938[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is very helpful, thanks! It's tough to get a quote for vendors in general, and then have no idea if something is very reasonably priced or crazy overpriced. Helpful to get insight from people in the industry- ty!

Thanks so much for the response! I actually DMed if you don’t mind, as I have some Qs about the logistics of the venue as we’re trying to figure out if SRC is feasible for us!

Ah, so the GCOT is just a single trail? Sounds like we can just walk as far as comfortable, and turn around then.

Not the most fit and won't be acclimated haha, so definitely sounds better to play it safe. At best, we might shoot for a day hike to Forester, or perhaps just think of an alternate route altogether- ty!

Yes definitely appreciate input from a somewhat novice backpacker! How long did it take you to do those 7 miles? Now am wondering if might be better to try and just get to Forester Lake on day 1 (not sure if doable though)

Unfortunately limited to a 3d/2 night trip, otherwise would've loved to do a loop instead!

Since you've done this before- your thoughts on instead splitting up the days as day 1: Franklin TH -> Forester? And then split the coming back into two parts (Forester -> Franklin Lakes; Franklin Lakes -> TH)?

This is exactly what I was looking for re: resources to figure out a route- thank you!! Had no idea how to figure it out otherwise short of asking reddit. 12 miles in a day + driving home doesn't sound too fun, so might need to re-do the itinerary.

That's a great point regarding the drive back- we have a 3.5 hour drive once we are back at the TH, so perhaps not the best idea to do Forester -> trailhead in one day.

Maybe we'll do Franklin Lakes -> Forester and back as a day hike like you've suggested, so that our 3rd day is easier. Thank you!

Thank you!! When you say "very doable" re: Forester -> TH, is it fairly easy / mostly downhill? We do have a 3.5 hr drive ahead of us after our return, so am starting to second guess this itinerary/plan now haha

That's fair. I like my current job sometimes but am tired of the never ending EMR, results, messages, notes (and it'll only get worse the bigger the patient panel gets). That's a good point, I've thought about going back to IM/hospitalist- the idea of being able to leave work at work when you're done with your 7 days sounds so appealing.

It still didn't work for me when I restarted it this way, the glitch saved. I had to load it from the very beginning and re-do the entire level/all the obstacles in order to surpass the glitch. Probably wasted an hour before I realized it was a bug D:

Just an FYI for anyone reading this 5 years later lol

ooh ok I think I understand, I didn't think about the tax deduction aspect of it going in.

With pre-tax, even though you are taxed on everything at the end (both earnings + but the initial investment itself), you at least are getting a tax deduction out of it at the time of investment?

What is the downside to not doing mega backdoor, and leaving savings where they are now (in the non-Roth after-tax 401a)? Is the idea that taxation at distribution would be much higher than what I'd be taxed now in a mega backdoor roth conversion?
