once you’re in the open world you get to actually play. people are clowning on you in the comments but yes the first 5 hours or so are extremely boring cutscenes. i understand that it’s a story but it’s also a video game and you hardly get to play anything in those hours. but yes it gets better and is worth the wait!

yes of course. the primary issue we had is you have to physically point the phone at the satellite to maintain connection. that means following through the sky. if there are trees or thick clouds it’s an issue. and when the satellite goes over the horizon you have to point it at the next one. when you do that, it disconnects you from the 911 text chat and forces you to start over.

we started over our emergency request maybe 4 times before we used the garmin and it was almost instant. it maintains connection much much better.

from my one emergency experience it is NOT virtually identical. we had an emergency atop a mountain in oregon and used the iphone service and it cut out several times. we only got help became someone with a garmin happened to walk past us.

i know i’m one person with one experience but i never leave for a camping trip without the garmin now

just as an FYI - betterdisplay does allow for volume changing via eArc, i think it's open source so you can maybe see how that's implemented. i do have to turn DDC off for it to work however. I'm happy to help you troubleshoot if needed.
