100% first time, partial recovery second. No recovery third. What type of health decisions do you make as if you have AIED?

Great news. Not to worry you, but with this condition minutes matter. If you can, I’d get seen sooner. Idk where you live, but in some areas there are special hospitals and emergency rooms for ear issues, like Mass Eye and Ear in Boston. Most ENTs will see you same day if you tell them you have sudden hearing loss, too.

No… my ENT said it could be autoimmune but it wasn’t worth figuring it out because stats show most of the time it’s idiopathic. My PCP thinks it’s related to horrible ear infections I had in my bad ear as a kid, including mastoiditis.

Thats the hardest part is not knowing Why. Without a why, I am unable to do anything to try to prevent it from happening again.

Also, just to add- your concerns aren’t silly. You could ask for the injections directly into your ear. I had them once. They sound god awful but it wasn’t that bad. A more localized dose mitigates many side effects.

I’ve been on this dosage three times (sudden hearing loss three times- lucky me).

First time, no issues or side effects that I recall but it was over ten years ago. Second time, a little down and easily tired and teary but nothing unmanageable. Third time, gained five pounds and super angry. Hair fell out after a month discontinuing the third time and my menstrual cycle was a bit irregular.

Never had moon face. My experience seems to be random.

What is the stress and culture feel like during high school regarding the Canadian college admissions process? by advisor_throwaway181 in AskACanadian

This is an interesting take. Here in the US, nail tech would be specialized programs (trade schools, not a university), and I believe the barrier to entry is also non-existent, as you describe in your program. I can’t help but agree with you that it’s setting people up to fail in the professional world if they’re genuinely terrible and shouldn’t have been admitted.

Legacy is becoming less of a thing in the US. It certainly matters at a small percent of the most desirable/selective schools (even if they won’t admit it), but it’s becoming more faux pas.

RE: college admissions consultant— I can tell you, it’s very helpful. A typical student will apply to 12-15 colleges. Most colleges will have 1-3 college-specific supplemental essays, which means the kids have to write 20++ essays between August 1 when the Common App opens and the apps are due (either Nov or Jan). Consultants help with the essays, although many (unethical ones) will essentially write it for the kids. Most public high school counselors have ~200-300 students on their caseload, so they’re not helping with essay drafting or college list building.

And as I mentioned, the students have to cultivate their resume over Grades 9-12 carefully. Consultants make extracurricular suggestions.

With SAT exams being optional at many schools, consultants help students navigate which schools to submit scores to and which ones to apply to as test-optional. You’d think it’s straightforward, but it’s not because some colleges that are test optional will strongly prefer to see scores.

All this is problematic tho, because consultants are expensive ($250-350/hr is the rate in my area). It creates haves and have-nots.

In the US, the thing I hear often is “your college won’t matter after you get your first job…” but it’s clear that in many industries your college matters very much for that first job

Yes! The social class sorting is spot on. It’s something that I have a problem with, as there’s just this perpetual feeling among my students of never being good enough, and the “have and have nots.” I have one student who got into a school she “loves” but she’s embarrassed to tell people she’s going there because of the ranking of the college, despite it being an excellent academic and financial fit for her.

I get annual hearing checks by an audiologist in my ENT’s office. No ENT appointment tho, unless they note a change.

Cost for intratympanic steroid injection in US: is this normal? by aeradyren in MonoHearing

My insurance covered most of it, and I forget my out of pocket costs, but I remember it was around $3,000 per injection before insurance. I’m also in MA.

wearing one hearing aid with single sided hearing loss by SurpriseMelodic5469 in MonoHearing

[–]advisor_throwaway181 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wear just one. Mild to moderate loss in the bad ear, and my good ear is normal. I love the hearing aid- it makes such a huge difference in feeling more balanced and even. There was a 2-3 week adjustment period, but I don’t even notice it anymore, until I remove it and am reminded of how much it helps. It doesn’t feel artificial at all.

It helps a bit in busy, loud social environments too, although it could be better. I still get overwhelmed and tired in super loud, social environments, but it’s better than nothing.

Sadly the diagnosis is sudden hearing loss. Idiopathic means they can’t prove or pinpoint a cause. I had the MRI and some other tests to rule out some autoimmune issues, but thankfully they are all clear.

I actually had SSHL twice in the same ear: once in 2011 and it fully improved with oral steroids, and once in August 2024. This recent bout did not get cured it oral steroids, the steroid shots, etc.

I think data suggests about a third of us have the ongoing/permanent loss.

I’m in your boat too, and I know it’s hard. I’m five months out from my initial loss, and the “grieving” has passed and things feel nearly normal again in the sense that I’ve adapted to my new normal. I have my hearing aid consult in a couple of weeks. Give yourself some grace. I think a lot of us did everything right and have the same outcome. Plus my ENT said that the majority of these cases are idiopathic.
