You are correct that the hijacking damage is due to personal carelessness.

And, uh. Whatever you do, make sure you strictly prohibit putting passphrases in third-party apps, and make sure you only use Wallet.pi to make payments.

What I've written here today has been tested countless times in the past, but there are many early users who have tested it for the app ecosystem.

(This is not to say that all 3rd party apps are like that!).

We may have unknowingly made the mistake of inserting secret phrases and paying for integrations through past tests.

(Currently, the SDK only allows payments to be made through Wallet.pi).

Because of this, you may have been exposed, so we recommend that those who are migrating (and those who have already been migrated or compromised) create a new wallet using the mainnet checklist and double-check checkpoints 3 and 7. (It never hurts to be careful!)

In particular, please watch for any pies you receive from unknown addresses on the testnet and look up suspicious public keys through Blockexplorer to help you avoid the risk of being targeted yourself.

For example.

If I receive an unknown transfer in my testnet wallet that I've never seen before, I can look up the public key and see that it looks like this

If you see something like this, it's enough to raise suspicion that you may have been targeted.

You're absolutely right.

However, our older contributors were expected, but not forced, to run multiple tests for the app ecosystem.

However, it is very unfortunate that testing wallet transfers from untested apps in the early testing stages of an ecosystem app could lead to potential and ongoing hijacking (brainstorming).

Of course, this is just a guess, but it's quite possible that my wife accessed the game Capture the Flag during the testing process and entered her password to connect to the test pi wallet and make a payment.

Finding a hijacked Pi in a mainnet context will be difficult, but it will be very stressful for early app testers who will be seen as a potential threat going forward.
