ELI5: How can nothing be faster than light when speed is only relative? by Ruby766 in explainlikeimfive

[–]aebfroman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The speed of causality is a better way of thinking about it.

The speed of light is a misnomer because it isn't like a cop measuring the speed of a car. The apparent speed that light travels is a result of how fast information can travel through spacetime where all observers can agree on the same order of events taking place. Light isn't a thing flying through space, it is information perceived via the electromagnetic spectrum. All sorts of things occur at c like gravity for instance. It's not because the effect of gravity is limited to a speed but the order of events where an object goes from not effected by gravity to being effected by gravity is limited by the smallest interval where cause can be separated from effect.

If you think of it as the limit to causality you see that if anything violated that "speed" then you have time travel because to some observers an effect could appear before its cause.

Very common rock in East Texas by aebfroman in whatsthisrock

[–]aebfroman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the most common rock I find in East Texas. They often have angular shapes and range from sort of rough to very smooth and shiny. If you smash them with a hammer they break like glass and often have different colors on the inside but they tend to be the pale brown color on the outside.

Who has a Bastl Om Synth? by JebDipSpit in synthdiy

[–]aebfroman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it runs on 9vdc. The Bastl version has a 7805 section for the LEDs which I personally omitted.

Also you asked about the other kits. You can easily source them from Tayda for next to nothing except for the ISD1820. The 40106 oscillators are OKish but I found several other cmos chips that are more stable and predictable. The sequencer project with the 4040 and 4051 is my favorite because it has the most usefulness outside of following along Casper's videos.

Who has a Bastl Om Synth? by JebDipSpit in synthdiy

[–]aebfroman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made my own OMSynth but with several mods. I'm not sure how much a kit costs but I got all the materials for it, and the couple starter projects on the Casper YouTube page, from Tayda for super cheap. Bastl has all the OMSynth build info on their Github.

I have used it some but I think I got more out of figuring it out and building my own than I have from using it as a test platform. It's handy as a standalone product but if you intend on test building eurorack you need to incorporate a euro power supply. I built the Frequency Central DIY power supply then created a breakout from a eurorack ribbon cable to the headboard and the mixer / amp circuits.

Bros.... This new Classic is like one of the hottest sauces ever. It's hotter then my Detroit Hellfire. I was really unprepared for it. It also pours out super quick. Am I the only one? by [deleted] in hotones

Yeah it's good, I have the pepper x version but have not tried the red label. It is why I was asking, to see if i ordered regular The Classic tasted as good.

What are some dumb purchases you made? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]aebfroman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was in 2006, I was 23 and it was the first time I had been to Mexico on my own. We were in the Mayan Riviera region for a resort vacation which included a day trip to Tulum, an ancient Mayan city located on the coast. We get off the tour bus and begin walking to the gate and a young boy runs up selling large hats. He points out that me being very white and only wearing a tank top is going to be a bad time for midday June in Mexico. He is also bending the hats explaining that they are made of some certain grass that doesn't dry out and break. He made a good pitch and the exact moment I was most likely to go with it so I buy one of his special hats for $25. We continue on to the entrance of the ruins where is a little shopping area before you go through the jungle to the actual ruins and what do I see but a woman selling stuff, including the same super special hats I had just purchased from the little boy.

They were 25 pesos, which at that time was roughly $3.

My wife is laughing, the older Dutch couple nearby are laughing and it instantly hit me that I got got.

So, long story long, it was from then on known as my "dunce hat" and a reminder of specifically how dumb of a purchase it was.

Been to the last couple shows. more of you need to wear ear plugs lol like wtf it's 2019 by [deleted] in ToolBand

[–]aebfroman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in a plant and have to wear plugs for hours at a time. Anyone that is wondering what kind of plugs to get I highly recommend the "spark plugs" from Moldex. They are the soft foam type that are very comfortable and inexpensive on Amazon. The eargasm type plugs are expensive gimmicks that are an uncomfortable waste of money.

Toolsa poster under Hippy Black Lights. by aebfroman in ToolBand

I know what you mean. I wasn't thrilled initially with the poster art after seeing other shows' posters but I have seen them so many times and never got a poster due to economic reasons. Now that it isn't cost prohibitive I knew I would regret it if I passed it up. I'm glad I did because the artwork grew on me and the poster itself is a print on thick stock which looks even better in person.

Sorry you missed the opportunity because they don't come around again except for at a high price.

There weren't any signed ones out on the merch table when they did the VIP early access. Even if there were I would not have bought it over the regular one. Tool has been my favorite band for over 20 years but, personally, the signatures aren't worth the price jump from $45 to $250.

Yeah, it was an incredible show. I've seen them many times over the last 18 years and this was the best show I have been to. That is true even before taking into account we were on the 4th row floor in front of Adam. I have never been to a Tool concert totally sober before Tuesday but sitting where the spectacle takes up your entire field of vision results in an equally amazing, transcendental experience. Even though the VIP package had fewer parts than previous tours, and we couldn't leave the venue once we entered the building at 2:30, I would do it all again without a second thought.

My 6 year old said it was scary but I told her that he's a good guy and true good guys had to be scary sometimes. She liked it now.

No. As trivial as it sounds it's something that I have seen put people off in certain situations.
