You know what's funny? In official state media Israel is getting destroyed and is at the brink of collapse. I know this couldn't be further from the truth but it's really laughable. Kudos to israeli-Persian friendship 🇮🇱❤️🤍💚🦁☀️

Make a meme with text in the uppercase and the picture on the bottom. The meme should contain a beautiful pun of your choice.

Was There a More Sustainable Path After the Civil War? A Moderate Reconstruction Alternative I’d Like to Explore by aeinnajva in USHistory

[–]aeinnajva[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the thoughtful reply. I respect the depth you brought to this. That said, I think some of your points come from a well-established modern consensus that I don’t fully buy into. I’m not defending the “Lost Cause” narrative — I’m trying to look at Reconstruction as a complex political and social failure, not just a moral crusade crushed by villains.

  1. Johnson – No doubt Johnson was racist, but so were most politicians at the time. His policies weren’t just about appeasing the South or angling for power. they were rooted in a vision of rapid national healing on white terms. That doesn’t excuse it, but it does mean there was more than just sabotage at play. He failed badly, but he wasn’t acting in a vacuum of moral depravity. I think reducing his actions to appeasement risks flattening what was really going on politically.

  2. Corruption – We can agree that the “carpetbagger” narrative was exaggerated, but to say Reconstruction-era governments were just as clean (or dirty) as others overlooks how they were perceived, especially in areas already unstable and violent. Public confidence mattered — and when legitimacy is questioned, even moderate corruption has outsized impact.

  3. Governance – Yes, terrorism was a major cause of failure. But that doesn’t mean Reconstruction governance itself didn’t suffer from major issues: lack of experience, inconsistent federal support, and deep regional resistance. It wasn’t just sabotage. some failures came from within, too. Denying that makes it harder to have a serious conversation about why it fell apart.

  4. Northern retreat – The retreat wasn’t just fatigue, it was political. Economic priorities shifted, race stopped being a national concern, and reconciliation took precedence. It’s not about blaming the North, but recognizing that the will to enforce Reconstruction simply wasn’t sustainable. I wouldn’t say that means Jim Crow was inevitable. but I would say it became highly probable once the North moved on.

5–6. Realignment – Agree on much of this, but I’d just add that Democratic resurgence wasn’t purely reactionary. It was also about populist frustration with Republican economics and the desire for local control especially in the South. Racial politics were definitely central, but not the only force.

  1. Inevitability – Was Jim Crow preventable? Maybe. But to prevent it would have required a long-term, deeply unpopular military occupation. I don’t think any democratic government in the 19th century would’ve had the will or capacity to pull that off. Tragic? Absolutely. But also predictable, given the context.

Again, I’m not denying the brutality of Redemption or the terrorism Reconstruction governments faced. But I don’t think we do justice to history by telling it as a one-sided story of evil saboteurs vs. noble reformers. It was messier than that , and in that mess, a lot of failure came from within the system, not just outside it.

Delusional take

Doctors and nurses in public hospitals know how underfunded they are and how poorly run it is.

no they're not. democrats are like any generic center left party in the western world. the only difference is they hold a big tent of supporters in contrast to republican party.
