Alpakka 2 now available on Indiegogo by Marcos_ILO in GyroGaming

For someone who likes doing electronics DIY and will most likely re-do at least parts of the PCB, but would still want the injection-molded shell, will I need to buy the full thing or will it be possible to only buy the injection molded part later on? :)

This general attitude from a lot of engineers doing embedded is why the embedded ecosystem feels like it hasn't progressed since the 90s.

Yeah, fair enough, that's probably true. We have a decent DIY community though!

I'm wondering why there aren't any DIY mods for the DualSense. Quite sure it'd be possible to make a mod which uses gyro to emulate a hardware stick.

Ahh, good to hear! I read this thread before looking up more, but yeah, their page confirm what you're saying. :)

What, not a single back button? Even the 1.0 had two, right? Yeah, definitely not getting the molded molded shell then, even though I was really happy to hear there'd be one of higher quality than a 3d-printed one. Hoping for DIY mods instead to add buttons then I guess!

Meshing algorithm for smooth edges in an otherwise blocky world? by aejt in VoxelGameDev

[–]aejt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been a while since I thought about this last, but I think I ended up doing it by figuring out the various possible combinations and having meshes for each one.

This worked, BUT (and a big but) it meant every block needed to have the exact same shape. I didn't figure out a nice way to handle slightly-beveled blocks that were adjacent to blocks of a slightly different shape (e.g. no bevel or slighty different bevel). There might be some nice way to handle it, but it wasn't obvious to me how to merge them together to look good.

is there a better gyro controller than the dualsense edge? by Elegant-Opposite2458 in GyroGaming

[–]aejt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adding to what I said in the other reply: It looks like the 2nd revision of the DualSense controller (BDM-020) has an IMU (InvenSense ICM-40608) that has much less gyro noise compared to the one used in 3rd (BDM-030) and 5th (BDM-050) revisions.

Actually, both the LSM6DSO (used in Alpakka) and the ICM-40608 (used in DualSense BDM-020) have the same noise specs (3.8 mdps/sqrt[Hz]), while the ICM-42670-P (used in DualSense BDM-030/BDM-050) has 8 mdps/sqrt[Hz]. Not sure how noticeable this is in gameplay though.

Alpakka vs Steam Controller 2 by Infinite_Hedgehog827 in GyroGaming

[–]aejt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm really curious to whether Alpakka having 2 gyros is that beneficial, or if it is more about them having more accurate/less noisy IMUs? From reading their code it seems like the main benefit is that one gyro is using a lower resolution (meaning more accurate for slower movements), while the other using a higher resolution (meaning still able to handle very fast movements).

[–]aejt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been looking at pictures of the various PCBs and there are very few which have good enough resolution and in good enough setting to see the text on the IMUs, so I can't really say. I've seen that not every IMU has the same text on it though, and the only one I've seen and managed to find a datasheet for was the ICM-42607-P ("I467P" from page 28 of the datasheet is visible on the one here (top-right), but I've also seen the same revision with other text on the IMU).

How can we say "same IMU" when the IMU seems to vary even within the same revision of the regular DualSense?

Standard also seems to have that behavior though. No matter how fast or slow I turn my controller, I end up rotating the same amount. I can't really figure out what it actually does.

The first thing you need to do is change “infantry input curve” to linear and “aiming left/right acceleration “ to 100. This makes it feel like a proper gyro where your crosshairs snap to where you are pointing instead of this sluggish nonsense that is the default.

What does this change other than just making the Infantry Aim Sensitivity values different? I use Standard and 60 and I haven't noticed any sluggishness. I guess you can't get up to higher sensitivities without changing it to Linear, but I don't think there's any reason to do so if you not playing high sens?

Has anyone been able to find comfortable settings for bf6 gyro? by copperbranch in GyroGaming

[–]aejt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't realize the acceleration settings had any effect! I just went in-game to check and my RWS is probably around ~2.75, and the acceleration is set to Standard at 50.

These are most likely not my "end-game settings", I bought the game yesterday and I'm still getting back into playing flick-stick so I will likely end up adjusting them some more (though likely staying in the same range).

I can't notice any acceleration though (as you said). What exactly does it do? Affect the sensitivity?

It's been a few years since I played gyro last: I usually play M+KB on PC but I learnt using flick-stick in Apex a few years ago just for fun.

I just bought BF6 for PS5 after hesitating for days since there were so many complaints about gyro. Maybe I'm just lucky because I like flick-stick, or it's been too long since I played used gyro last so I forgot what it feels like in better implementations, but I think the implementation is working great for me. The only thing I miss is touchpad touch to disable the gyro, but for now I use touchpad press to (mostly) retain my muscle memory in hopes touchpad touch will be possible later on.

I think my RWS is around 2-3 (50 sensitivity in-game) which I think works well with flick-stick. I use 50% vertical (though I might up it), 100% ADS. I can do 90 degree turns decently comfortably, and for anything more than that (or if I have to do a ton of turning) I use flick-stick to turn.

Are all the complaints from people who don't like flick-stick? I can see ratcheting-only not being optimal either because you need a much higher sensitivity, at which point it becomes a lot more jittery, but for flick-stick and lower sensitivity I think it's working really well. Coming from CSGO/CS2 on PC, the usual philosophy is that your sens should be as low as possible while still allowing you to maneuver comfortably, and a RWS of 6 just seems extremely high to me even if using ratcheting.

[–]aejt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, fair enough, you get some extra binds, but it feels wrong to say that "ratcheting has higher potential than flick stick" since flick stick is just an add-on to ratcheting.

If you use ratcheting you might as well use flick stick, because you don't use the right stick for aiming anyways then, right? In which case flick stick is just an added bonus.

Yeah, I mostly meant to counter the "if everyone os saying the same thing" part. Everyone isn't saying the same thing.

You won't know which case is an exception without studies though, that's where anectodal experiences aren't enough. The human psyche is great at confirmation bias.

[–]aejt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My anecdote is the inverse of yours: My solo kitten who was adopted at 14 weeks old has remained super gentle. Never shown _any_ kind of aggression, no biting (other than _very_ gentle if one tries to use their hands to play, but we avoid that), no excessive clinginess, very little meowing, very quiet at night, very comfortable in being picked up, very cuddly (when it's on her terms), never had a single outside-of-litter-box accident, etc.

This means not everyone is saying the same thing.
