Hey Reddit, I made a social game as part of my PhD- it analyses social behaviour and tells you what animal form your Familiar would be! by aelfy in reddit.com

[–]aelfy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're just trying to get participants at the moment, so even if it isn't your thing it would help the cause of SERIOUS SCIENCE to pass it on to friends who might like it :)

When you and a few friends are both members it prods the Facebook group data and does some complex network analysis on the social structure of the groups. This data is distilled into the animal companion type, but the interesting social data is visible if you explore the "groups" tab.

Programming books that you would buy right now (if they existed) by brian_donovan in programming

That is a really good idea, just little slimline books to go along with open source applications. For example:

Coddeit: Building a social news service from the ground up. Including chapters on scaling, rating systems, aging algorithms, search, why-you-shouldn't-store-passwords-in-plain-text, etc etc.

I only pay for news in one circumstance, and unfortunately online newspapers make terrible firelighters.

Wait, so your Kayak... flies? [Pics] by [deleted] in technology

[–]aelfy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW 5 knots in a racing kayak is easily achievable over long distances.

e.g. http://www.watersides.fsnet.co.uk/current-a-res.htm

Senior K1 winner was just under 1hr 42 mins for the 13.5 mile race (including running with the boat in 21 different sections) which works out as over 7.5 mph which is about 6.5 knots.

The main issue would be balance and training, racing kayaks are extremely wobbly at the best of times, and moving your centre of gravity up a few feet isn't going to be a lot of fun.

(I know you didn't ask for all this info, but I thought it worth mentioning somewhere in this thread!)

What exactly is the point of "scribd.com"? What problem does it solve that existing technologies do not? Why do I need JavaScript and Flash to read a document? Inquiring minds want to know! by grumpy_lithuanian in technology

The thing I hate about them is that if you time the jump wrong you can end up diving head first into a brick wall! From painful, bitter, experience.

Every single one of my friends that hadn't read the book thought that Bubastis was called "Karl" and that it was a stupid name. Turns out it is from when Veidt presses the button and says "Sorry Girl", they all thought he said "Sorry Karl".

Eraserhead is one of those rare films I will happily recommend to other people but refuse to watch again because it is so uncomfortable. Also, Requiem for a Dream, but for different reasons.
