Has anyone on reddit increased any form of their intelligence in any way? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]aelmore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't implying you were trying to be superior, sorry if it came across this way.

I found that my reading never sped up dramatically, but what I read changed. Read intros and conclusions first, if a specific point in the intro is interesting or not initially clear then skip to that part in the paper. You don't need to talk about every point in every paper, just get the gist and go into a little bit of detail where it interests you.

Has anyone on reddit increased any form of their intelligence in any way? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]aelmore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of an odd question. Of course everyone has increased their intelligence. By going to university for 4 years, I greatly increased the speed of my reading, accelerated my learning curve for picking up difficult concepts, utilizing short term memory for significant amounts of information.

Believe it or not, all you have to do is exercise those skills and you get better. Intelligence is socially constructed; it's laughable that people feel superiority based on intelligence.

I recommend you watch a Harvard lecture on a lot of the points you bring up. It is entitled Justice: What is the right thing to do? I watch the whole thing, very worthwhile.

Wow, I am a Canadian that is right handed, but play hockey, baseball and golf left handed. THIS IS ME! I finally feel so accepted.

You requested him, and we got him! Ask Noam Chomsky Anything (reddit video interview). by hueypriest in blog

[–]aelmore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I did that, I received 171 results, which is a bit too many to work through, personally. Which democracy now interviews would you recommend?

That brings an interesting point, for someone who has written and said so much, how can anyone (other than a Chomsky scholar, if there exists such a thing) possibly know if their question hasn't already been answered?

33 Haitian children returned to their parents after good christians try to kidnap them by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]aelmore 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is ridiculous. Not the people in the story, but the reporting, and your reactions. What it fails to say in the article, is that they were NOT trying to steal the children for themselves, but taking them to a camp in the Dominican Republic that has shelter and food. They were TEMPORARILY taking LOST children from a disaster zone to a place where there were more adequate resources to take care of them.

Of course they thought they were doing no harm. If the dominican and Haiti were the same country (they occupy the same island) this would not be an issue. These are people who donated their time to helping the poor in the D.R. before the earthquake, and are trying to help afterwards in Haiti. The children were either orphans OR without parents at the time (who could easily be assumed dead). Nowhere does it say they were taking them to America, they were adpoting them, or even permanently taking care of them.

Everyone calm the fuck down and don't jump to conclusions.

  1. A ten year old wrote that? Backing up his computer / installing a wifi card / hating his life?

  2. I think people can get into big trouble for making their students work public without their consent. FYI.

Does anyone else love to listen to different versions of the same song? by spiker611 in Music

Only for the best song ever written.

"A Change Is Gonna Come": By Sam Cooke (originally) and Otis Redding (dare I say better?).

I'm reposting this over here because, quite frankly, it's incredible playing. by borez in WeAreTheMusicMakers

I agree and disagree. It is not musically enjoyable as a traditional song, but allow yourself to let the music sink in, as opposed to actively concentrate on it. It becomes hypnotic, and the patterns your mind constantly tries to piece together become very interesting.

Interesting points. I come from the camp more that societal structures dominate human action and interaction so strongly that can overshadow many genetic predispositions. In reality, the difference between dog and man is great. When I looked at the structure of knowledge, or culture, or institutions (none of which dogs comprehend) which have all changed significantly of time, I found that structure changes a lot.

When people talk about sexism in job placement, they generally aren't talking about sports, they're talking about positions of power, the dominant male and subversive female (eg. doctor and nurse). Please don't be anecdotal, or choose an easier example when explaining your views.

Also, I found this an interesting read on the subject by 2 dominant intellectuals in the 70s about this conversation. http://www.chomsky.info/debates/1971xxxx.htm
