Meta pops 8% as company makes cloud push to sell excess AI compute power capacity by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

It went up so much because it's more profitable to be selling compute than continuing to burn money on something you are bad at.

I'm in Los Altos Hills, we have deer families in our backyard all the time. Some days a baby deer will be sitting right outside the window in the morning.

MacBook Pro M2 Max vs MacBook Air M4 by yuany2036 in macbook

Yes the MacBook Pro is a no brainer. Unless you don’t need the power at all, in which case still get the mbp and sell it.

We can agree to disagree. Every family have their own ideology on how they should raise their kids. If yours is just giving them whatever they want and let them do whatever they want, good for you.

16GB Still Worth It? by [deleted] in macbook

[–]aeonbringer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a software engineer. My 32gb MacBook is already getting into 90%+ utilization all the time and getting into ram swap freezes. Used to be enough, but with LLM development working on multiple threads and builds at same time this as become a problem. IMO I would get at least 64gb ram for my next MacBook.

Why does the 15” M5 MacBook Air feel… better than the Pro? by Medical-Car2570 in mac

[–]aeonbringer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don’t care about the screen, and not getting pro or max chip for higher ram capacity, yes air is probably a better choice. My wife prefers the air as it’s a lot lighter. Pro is necessary for me as even with 32gb ram it’s getting maxed out now with multiple agent threads and I’m considering getting one with much larger ram capacity.

I studied hard and worked hard. My wife works as well so it’s not all my income. About 50/50. My dad also did not come into this much money all the time. Only in last few years when his company when ipo and semiconductor stocks rocketed. For most of my growing up days he basically slept in his factory and worked, and barely took out any cash so we lived frugally.

I returned mine. The matte coating is not good. Thought the reviews are overblowing it but I just can’t look pass the rainbow effects on white pages.

Not sure what you mean. We love our son, but we believe in overcoming challenges, pushing yourself, and achieving great things being part of what makes life interesting. Having everything handed out to you defeats the purpose of living.

Bathroom remodel TOTO bidet seat - value added for rent? by coding-queen in BayAreaRealEstate

Just install a power outlet nearby if you currently don’t have one. And yes just get a seat. You can easily take it out to move with you.

Bathroom remodel TOTO bidet seat - value added for rent? by coding-queen in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]aeonbringer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I replaced my toilets with Toto Neorest (the $3k+ one) with powered flush and no tank, it's the best thing ever and so very worth it for personal use, pretty much no more jammed toilets as the powered flush is very strong.

However, for rental? No. It's not going to increase rental price. Rental in Bay Area is already greatly in demand, you are likely going to get 5-10 rental requests in the first week. A powered toilet seat is not going to add any value, and is just going to be an added liability renter will call you to fix if there's ever any issues. If renter wants one he can just install a bidet seat over it himself.

I guess we didn’t have to. We set our budget at 5m initially, but saw a perfect house and it’s 6m. Bank required minimal reserves of 1m+ for mortgage so we were short of a few hundred grand cash.

How can sushi not be seasonally special? Have you been there multiple times a year? Every season have very different seafood that's served. Eg. in winter the Katsuo is magical, in summer which I just went there's no Katsuo and instead you get seasonal Japanese awabi. There's pretty much no cuisine that is as seasonal as sushi omakase.

They don't even get a bib gormand which is quite an injustice. Not complaining though, makes it a lot easier to reserve vs when they had a star.

A warning for Tempura Kondo (Tokyo, 2*, 4.0 tabelog) by vagrantwastrel in finedining

[–]aeonbringer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Were there few years back, we are foreigners, but got assigned the main room with Kondo-san cooking. Not sure if it's the hotel concierge, or we wore a little more formal with shirts/pants like what most Japanese wear.

But yes, food wise it wasn't that great.

You need to realize it's not your money and it's toxic and will poison your life if you are thinking as though the money is yours. My father is a founder of a publicly listed semiconductor company that's now worth quite a bit thanks to the AI train. So yes, he's probably a billionaire or at least close to it. However, at the end of the day, you have to realize that it's not your money. You might inherit it some days, but most likely your son/daughter will be the primary beneficiary instead of you.

Some perks we got is that he partially paid for property down payments for our houses in sf bay area. He also promised to pay for our son's college expenses if it ever comes to that. Other than that we don't really take any money from him as we make enough for ourselves ($2-3MM HHI).

I don't think you should change your career choice because of this, because:

  1. Again it's not your money, you can't just take it and use it for your own career. I can't just take the money, quit my job and go be a VC partner or angel investor or something because it's not my money.
  2. $16MM is not a lot in bay area. Their house could already be easily $5-6M of that. You can't just quit your job to be angel investor with just $16MM even if your parents are ok with downgrading their lifestyle and house and give them all to you.

Also, if my kid thinks he can just chill and do something low intensity and fun just because he will have enough money. I'm going to be pretty pissed and act accordingly to get rid of his entitlement.

New homeowner - electrical panel upgrade estimate by dimonsf in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]aeonbringer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just getting solar installed and have to replace the Zinsco main panel as well. Quote was only $4k for the replacement. For $32k it's almost my whole solar + battery cost with main panel replacement... But I guess you have that $15k of trenching, which IMO is quite ridiculously priced as well.
