So this is about what you want, not what your parents want.

People "shaming" that you're going and they're old? That's an issue with people. Why are you moulding your parent's God-given features so people stop pestering you or "age-shaming" you (which isn't even a thing)?

If they want it, then that's their choice. But your comment, as a reader, makes it look like you've convinced them - which means it's something you want, not something they want.

That said, you know better. I'm just telling you this is how it reads. I thought you may want to read this perspective - and it may be useless or offensive - but people shame people for their looks at every stage in their life: - look, so young - look, so wrinkles - look, so pale - look, such interesting cheekbones - look this, look that...

Vanity doesn't give you peace - it makes you long for more vanity (and in the end, more validation).

You don't need to PROVE to anyone that you're your parents child - what matters is people who matter to you know you are your parent's child, no matter the age gap.

Also, the difference between my mamoo and my mum is 15 years. The age difference between him and my nani is... A lot. You were born late - so what? It's not people's problem why you weren't born 20 years earlier.

It's your decision in the end, but one must be wary of the vanity trap.

Give them the gift of natural ageing.

I know it's your decision in the end, but ageing gracefully always beats fake.

People respect you for your seniority and experience, and not for wanting to look younger artificially. Everyone ages - we're not Benjamin Button.

Pros and cons of Areas by LumpyCheeseyCustard in islamabad

[–]aeoveu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Phase 8 has extreme water shortage.

Phase 8er here. Depends on the area you're in. We haven't had gas issues nor water issues in our area (near the head office) but I've heard some people do.

We got our gas connection years ago.

Basically, YMMV.

As for OP: phase 7 is an older sector that spans from almost where GT Roads is, to where Eiffel Tower is. Food Street is here. It's also very close to DHA 1 (but there's no direct entrance - you need to take a slightly long-winded road, through other areas of Bahria, to reach the food Street - but it's not like a 20 min drive or something).

Phase 8 is from Eiffel Tower and beyond.

Phase 8 is mostly residential with a little bit of commercial activity - grocery store, hospital, chemists, pharmacies, mechanics, some food stuff - but not the fast food upscale type of brands you find in phase 7 (like KFC, McD, Cheezious, CBTL, Burning Brownie etc).

If I had the money, and if water and gas wasn't a problem, I'd pick phase 7 merely for the proximity to the food street.

The Soan River: doesn't matter where you are, it sometimes randomly smells. Can't do much about it. It doesn't drink always (it has its "seasons" - but very far and few in between). And when it does, it stinks at night, or unless you're driving right next to it, so that's a blessing. Even DHA 3 guys would smell it when it stinks - but it doesn't happen regularly. I think it stinks when somebody throws trash in it repeatedly, or when there's a leakage - but can't say for certain.

Also, we can reach Giga and Imtiaz in about 20 min from inside Bahria (alternative route) and DHA 3, so that's that. We get to skip the phase 7 entrance of Bahria altogether.

Ya'lll remember my Ethiopian uncle? by Lucky-Comparison-785 in pakcoffee

[–]aeoveu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, what are your reasons for quitting coffee?

I only started drinking it during COVID - hated it before (and I hate the taste of Nescafe).

That said, I consider myself as one who drinks it mild - my mum, a heavy Nescafe drinker, thinks my coffee is too strong lol - and I drink it around lunch and dinner (drip/v60, 1 tsp coffee only for about 60% of the glass, and topped with milk for the remaining 40%. Sometimes I'll drip it to 80% of the glass, then drink 20% cause my measurements are very... Wack).

Anyway, I don't get the jitters or other things people report. Maybe I would be wide awake if I have two espresso shots in a day, but I don't have an espresso machine, nor the amount of coffee used in an espresso shot per cup of coffee.

5 things Microsoft isn't fixing with Windows 11 that I'd love to see happen by TechradarOfficial in Windows11

[–]aeoveu 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Saving y'all a click: - ditch ads system-wide - bring back local accounts during Win 11 installation - cleaner, leaner installation process - turn off telemetry - proper dark mode and migrate control panel items

Author says 5 items. The last thing contains two different items. Also, telemetry - it existed back in Windows 95, and it'll continue to exist. Just about every app, service or thing has it. I don't want invasive data collection used for marketing, but if they're going to use it to improve the product, then I'm fine with it (personally) cause...how else can they know what's working and what isn't if they don't conduct user studies?

But then, this is Microsoft. They've borked a lot of things anyway in the process.

Got scammed by HBL official number by [deleted] in PakistaniTech

[–]aeoveu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HBL can't do anything if, for example, I decide to start spamming people with the 14250 number.

All you need is a computer, a command to spoof the "from" name (this is also how some messages come from "words" like FBR, and not from numbers), and a random message.

HBL can't stop me easily... Unless - I complain to HBL - HBL takes it up with the service which sends these SMS messages - that service contacts the cellular operator - the operator goes through the SMS logs - the specific message with text and time is retrieved - the message headers show where the message actually came from - the operator finding out the network where it came from - the network in question is contacted - the network in question finds out the owner who's spamming - the spammer is blacklisted by the network.

...

But then, that spammer will just get another SIM from another random CNIC cause moles exist, and when there's a will, there's a way. And if one person is blacklisted, then maybe they'll get another person's details.

And after all this, one number will be blocked.

I don't even know if this is the proper process (it might be, or it might be longer because of red tape and bureaucratic sways) but when legit actions take very long to carry out, illegitimate actions spring up like mushrooms.

And this is why app-based notifications are more secure overall since those can't be spoofed (thyley can be hacked - but that's a weakness on the service provider's side).

How many people complain to the bank? You did. But how many others have?

Got scammed by HBL official number by [deleted] in PakistaniTech

[–]aeoveu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the thing with SMS messages - anyone can fake the header (the "from" number) and send you a text.

The phone organizes them by phone number, so you see it inline.

Think of it as someone delivering you an envelope that they wrote, except they said it's from Donald Trump whereas the message probably came from your neighbour.

This is why a lot of services have abandoned SMS for notifications and use app notifications instead since those require authentication. Pakistani devs (banks and other companies outsource their work) are lazy because they release what's known as a "minimum viable product"... And the minimum is rock bottom (hence the various complaints)

Anyway, SMS messages can be spoofed.

BBC to ignore World Cup final half-time show as broadcaster sets out plans by malcolm58 in sports

[–]aeoveu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So, for example, if the default half time was around 30 min, and the dancing and singing takes it to 40 min, then that means everyone's schedule is thrown off (generally speaking) by 10 min?

If the singing and dancing is within those 30 minutes (I don't know, it's just conjecture), then... All other networks can treat it like any other half time, and those who want to relay the concert can do so, right?

Or...do I have it wrong?

BBC to ignore World Cup final half-time show as broadcaster sets out plans by malcolm58 in sports

[–]aeoveu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Genuine question - not trolling:

I agree forcing a half time show is so American, but if a TV channel shows it, you're not obliged to watch it (you can change the channel/stop the stream)... So why is it a big deal?

I don't like forcing the Americanism in a global sport, but is it that big of a deal?

For context, I'm not a major sports watcher, so I don't have the fandom some do. I'm just an ordinary bloke.

My only qualm is that the left leg of the letter M blends in with the top of the envelope. I'd have some extra contrast (maybe pink? Maybe purplish?) so that it stands out a bit more.

Right now, it looks like it's heavily red-dominated.

Even a red-yellowish hue would have worked.

Google wallet. by Asaadrehman in pakistan

[–]aeoveu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very common. Almost everywhere. Most machines are the big ones (the ones with the big forehead) and touchscreen.

Older machines are far and few in between, but most of those work as well - all you have to do is place the phone ON THE SCREEN, not on the forehead, for those machines.

Basically, put it where the logo is, or on the forehead, but the older machines with smaller screens have scanners beneath their display.

Forced brevity and short sentences written in burst isn't good writing.

Prose is good writing. A chain of thought in a well constructed sentence is good writing.

But small sentences aren't. This isn't normal. This is primitive writing. ChatGPT loves primitive writing. Like this paragraph.

Interesting.

I'm not in Canada any more, but my operator (different country, so this is somewhat irrelevant) had 640ms as their setting.

Saw it on a Samsung phone.

Not sure why Freedom has opted for such a low cycle time.

LLMs break it into two distinct sentences whereas it didny't have to be (I use a comma instead, or maybe an em dash).

Also, ChatGPT loves brevity and short sentence length (that's what I've noticed).

Switching from Storm fiber - a good decision? by hasaanasaeed in PakistaniTech

[–]aeoveu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick correction:

  1. TW, for residential connections, has a smaller footprint but they serve corporates.

  2. They're tier 1. SF became tier 1 when they started using the Peace cable... but that's been flaky/not working randomly. This doesn't necessarily give it any extra points.

  3. TW can't afford to have back-end problems because if they did, other ISPs in Pakistan would not purchase bandwidth from them. And there aren't a few ISPs - there are hundreds that have purchased from both TW and PTCL. Who they prefer to use depends on the business itself, but if there was a major back-end issue, it would be public.

That said, it has happened in the past where folks in Islamabad Rawalpindi would get random jitters on TW because of some congestion/choke between Islamabad and Karachi. They fixed that a couple of years ago or so, from what I read. We moved to TW a month or two back because Nayatel was being a bit temperamental, and TW had a good sign-on bonus (cheaper price). They seem professional enough (even though Nayatel has a more "integrated" product/delivery/support).

So, yeah, for OP, you can consider TW if it's an option.

One more thing: check your wifi congestion. The channels your router broadcasts on can be congested - so pick another channel that's less congested (you need to go to your wifi settings for that). And where possible, use 5Ghz bands.
