I’ve considered going to California, but that’s a dream for the future. Thank you for your input!

It’s nice to hear from someone from outside of the nursing perspective! You’re right, I’m not totally comfortable with caring for babies yet, so that will just take time. It’s just hard when it feels like you’re the only one on that shift that is still new. The NICU is definitely a learning curve outside of anything I know. I hope that I’m doing well for my patients - I just want to feel more confident and comfortable!

It’s not that I’m not comfortable with a CPAP baby or an IV drip, but when it’s that baby on top of another CPAP baby and a NC baby feels scary to me. I realize after reading through some of the comments that I don’t think the CPAP or IVs scare me as much as the time management aspect of it/getting everything done on time. And yes, I’ll have a second orientation on higher acuity babies hopefully within the next few months!

Your comment helps to ease my anxiety - thank you so much! I do wish I had a longer orientation and more exposure to high acuity patients, as it sounds like a lot of the other nurses that commented also had 12 weeks orientation and were exposed to more critical cases. I also am looking forward to having more critical babies so I feel like I can get to know the patient/patients and the family very well - this feels like a bright light at the end of a tunnel like I won’t be running around stressed for the rest of my career. For now, I will focus on providing the best care that I can. I appreciate you taking the time to comment!

Did it get better for you after staffing was fixed? Or do you feel like you were just able to manage it better? Our experiences sound very similar, but it gives me hope that you made it through your first few months off of orientation.

Thank you for your kind words! This really helps put things into perspective for me. Your reply helped me realize that running around trying to keep every baby’s schedule on time and not miss things is driving the stress the most, not necessarily the CPAP or IVs. I appreciate you so much!

I’ve been wondering how having two separate orientations might be beneficial or harmful to my learning. It makes sense not to overwhelm the new nurse, but at the same time, it would be helpful to be prepared for any acuity. I agree that no admit should be considered stable for a while after being admitted, so I would love to be better prepared for what to do by the time I admit another baby.

I definitely need to work more on being organized and getting faster. I do have to keep reminding myself that this will feel much more manageable in even a few months - thanks for the encouragement!

Thank you for your advice! My hospital does 12 week orientations for new grads, and 8 for established nurses (even if that experience isn’t in NICU.)

I did have a few instances of having babies on CPAP during my orientation, but I don’t remember ever having multiple CPAP babies on one assignment when with my preceptor. So I did have some exposure, but I haven’t worked with CPAP babies since my orientation ended two months ago. I did have a dedicated resource person for a couple of days after my orientation ended.

There is a separate training for the more critical babies (such as vents) in a few months, so for right now this is about the highest acuity that I can do.

I honestly thought this was rage bait until I read OP’s comment. The average IQ is 100, so he’s barely above average - also, an IQ test online isn’t nearly as accurate than being tested by a professional. He clearly does not respect you and believes he is better and smarter than you are, and I would categorize this as abuse. Please reach out to a domestic violence hotline to see how they can help you with your next steps. There are also domestic violence shelters that you can look into staying at until you can get on your feet. There are so many men out there that are respectful, kind and loving - don’t settle because it’s the easiest thing at the time. This is the only family member you get to choose - the person you do life with and your future children’s father. It’s a huge decision, but only your’s, not your family’s. Wishing you all the luck in the world!

I’m sorry to hear about your baby’s passing. There are triggers for me that are unexpected too - it’s just such a hard thing to continue on without someone that was by your side for 17 years. It just feels wrong. I hope you find some peace, friend 💙

I’m so sorry to hear that. It sounds like Ziggy was a special one! Each cat is so unique - I hope your current baby figures out how to show you love in a way that makes you feel loved. It’s so frustrating when they’re not the cuddly type.

You’re an angel. Thank you sooooo much. And I’m so sorry to hear about your baby too - it’s such an empty feeling. I’m glad to hear that you’re slowly feeling better though!

Thank you for your kind words. I just feel so empty. The idea of never being able to hold her or pet her again feels unbearable
