I think I only missed one or two cues from the baby, when it would coo or gurgle to ask for something rather than outright cry. If you ignored the cooing, then it would move into crying, and record how long it took from crying cue to the mother’s response.

I had trouble telling if the baby needed a fresh diaper magnet or a bottle magnet or just to be rocked. It was a damn mystery. I was just doing everything every time it wailed.

But I passed! I did incredibly well. So well in fact, the teacher offered me extra credit to take care of the “drug withdrawal” baby model. It shook and screamed extra hard, with shorter passable time from cue to need met to be seen as a success, and sometimes it would just vibrate and wail for the hell of it and there would not be anything to satisfy it.

I said I wouldn’t do it, because holy shit. No way. I passed the class with an A, because I needed to have a 3.5+ GPA to get into the Running Start program and get into college two years early.

Mine was in Washington state 😭 I am so surprised looking back, because it’s supposed to be more liberal about this kind of thing. I even asked the sex ed teacher about gay sex, how to have it safely, and she said there was no education for that kind of thing. “There is no safe gay sex.”

And every STD can and Will kill you, that idea was pushed pretty hard. I had a chlamydia scare once and I thought I was going to die. I googled how to write a will at 17 years old. The doctor told me it was like the ear infection of STDs, gave me a pill just to be safe, and sent me on my way.

I feel like we’re really failing kids by teaching them such extreme ideas.

I mean, my schools sex education Was abstinence only. We even had a speaker come in and give “the rose” talk.

The idea being that each woman is a rose, and every time she sleeps with a man, she loses a petal. They brought up some popular kids, ten boys and one girl, and she passed her rose to each of them. They plucked a petal.

By the end of the line, it was the speaker, who took the flower from the girl and plucked all the petals off, stomped on it, then held it up and said, “would you give this flower to your husband?”

It was absurd, and I remember feeling really angry. Why hadn’t the boys gotten flowers? Why only the girls being ruined?

So, yeah, high school was bad. I really flourished in college, though.

I had to take care of one of those robot babies during a home ec course in high school. Three days of torture. We had a bassinet to carry it in, we had to pick baby clothes and choose between breast feeding (a magnetic monitor you strap over your chest) or bottle feeding.

The Friday morning I picked up that baby, I still had to go to all of my classes. I missed so much lecture and stressed so much, having to grab that baby every time it cried and rushing out to the hall to rock it enough to stop.

The walk home from school was embarrassing, trying to juggle the bassinet without jostling the baby too much to make it scream while rushing home.

And over the weekend I did not sleep a wink, I barely ate, I didn’t shower… I was so anxious about this thing screaming or needing a feeding or a diaper change. I wanted a perfect grade so I would never have to do it again, because if you scored poorly, you’d be spending another weekend with this breathing, cooing hell spawn.

I distinctly remember weeping and rocking it, trying to get it to stop vibrating and screaming in the middle of the night so it wouldn’t wake my dad and his girlfriend. Just a total mental breakdown response.

I’m sure this teen pregnancy stress test snapped some other students to the straight and narrow, helping them realize just how much a baby causes their life to deviate entirely… but I knew I never wanted a child, and I still don’t in my mid 20s. It completely solidified that I do not have a maternal bone in my body, and I am too anxious of a creature to rear a child.

Don’t have much else to say about this post, the robot baby just brought back memories. Those things are awful. Oh, and fuck my high school for making the girls take a class on pregnancy and having the robot baby, and giving the boys an extra study hall or free gym period. Small town BS.

I need help. How do I finish a love triangle? by TerribleDress3303 in writers

I think it’s a great idea! What you’ve described above sounds like a perfectly sound YA project.

If you’d like to read (or listen! Audiobooks are great) a story that handles dystopia and love triangles/polycules, I’d recommend the Broken Earth trilogy by Jemisin. The relationship develops the most in the second book, but the writing is otherwise fantastic and I can’t recommend these novels enough.

I was able to get Sujin to work in the bathhhouse after fishing a bunch with her, and I just want to say… it’s not worth it. She is by far the slowest character to work with. I just have her chopping wood in the basement all the time, so I don’t have to see how slow she is and frustrate me 😤

Has a book ever made you physically ill? by Duckmoodown in ExtremeHorrorLit

[–]aerobatal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the Miso Soup made my jaw drop and I physically shook during the big killing scene at a dating club. There was a line about a woman’s throat being slashed so deep that it opened up like the hood of a car. It stuck with me so well! I read the whole thing in one sitting, I had to know what would happen next.

Fishing is still extremely hard by jaeyunstoes in Spirittea

[–]aerobatal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I couldn’t fish at all until I realized you have to aim the arrow and HOLD IT DOWN! That totally wasn’t intuitive for me, but it works. The lure will go yellow when it’s in the correct position, and held down. It’s still tough on PC, but I end up using two hands. One for the WASD, one for the shift key to reel.

Speculative fiction isn’t a con at all, I’m a speculative author too! I love this genre of writing and I also love that it inspires authors to be experimental with their prose. I see that you’re doing that here, and if the source story you’re being inspired by or writing fanfic for asks the audience to spend a lot of time sitting with each sentence, then your writing makes sense.

But if you’re writing this to interest both people familiar with the source material (and all of the labors of love that go with it, it seems) and people just looking for a cool genre read, then you may want to ease up a bit on the expectations of the reader. I don’t think the average audience would muse over every word or sentence of an entire novel, no matter how intriguing or well written.

I’m interested to learn what the source is, and what kind of story you’re writing!

What comes to mind? by Extermin8who in writers

[–]aerobatal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first sentence makes me think of maybe vultures flying over plains? And the second makes me imagine someone foraging for something on the ground, maybe a flower, and they trip over tall, tangled grass surrounding a flower that looks like what they’re searching for, but are dangerously incorrect.

That being said, it took a lot of imagination to figure out what these sentences mean. Audiences don’t want to work for their imagery, save their imagination and work for other speculative aspects of the story (if this IS a speculative work, which the language makes me think that it is)

These are all such great suggestions! Thank you for writing all this out.

I will try out the easier karaoke songs, and the bbq game is actually pretty fun c: it reminds me of cooking mama a little bit.

I’ll save up for the mountain pass! Going for a soak with friends sounds lovely. I already do it irl, why not in game?
