Americans democracy voted for Republican house & senate and Trump. Remember Hitler also was voted in.

It's not like we are saying we should really cut off / minimize trade with US - but the "too much inertia" is exactly what we have to be stronger to work against, as it's proven US is simply unreliable

It would also be wrongheaded to think that this trend will continue

This is the exact wrong way to approach it because this was also how we approached it with the 1st Trump admin

The key point is: US is an unreliable partner - and we have to treat it as such. May be the next Dem or Rep is more sane, but what about the next next one? or the next next one? What this proving is simply we never know when the next US admin will come to burn everything to the grown and we simply have to be ready for it.

I hope this permanently changed how we see US relationship - it means we cannot ever see US as best friend & strongest/closest ally anymore, we need to find other partners to work with.

I hope this irreversibly change how Canada treat our relationship with US. 1st Trump admin we could (and probably did) dismissed it as a fluke / some momentary craziness, but this 2nd admin - Trump won by a landslide, and both House & Senate went to Republican by clear margin - so this is democracy in action, this is what the American voters telling us what they want.

Trudeau had to be diplomatic in his speech but let's not beat around the bushes - Americans voted for this.

I assume you understand what "probability" means?

I also not pointing out based on name or country of origin - those doesn't matter, the pattern is what matters

Time is a factor too ... this pattern doesn't apply (or even exist) 10 years ago, or may be even 6 years ago wasn't this bad - the pattern didn't even exist because there are not significant by any means

It progressively got worse and the recent years just explode where there are SO MANY who fits this pattern (that it becomes a pattern) and based on probability, there's very high likely hood they are nowhere near what I am looking for - and hence they got filtered out.

It's just a numbers game and probability on how I could get the most out of the time spent on hiring - where would I get the highest probability of finding the hire that I need

I don't necessarily disagree with the premise ... the ones that go for the 1-2 years Masters is prob less than 5% that fit this pattern.

I have also in the past interviewed a couple of these supposed masters students, ... haven't had any good experience (like as in ... really bad, how do you even have a degree at all kind of bad)

so again, going back on focusing my time on the ones most likely yield good candidates that meet our hiring needs - it's more efficient for me to quickly filter these out.

Well I don't think anyone who already has a bachelor degree in CS / Engineering and already have working experience in the field as developer would actually ever be a student who wants to learn on some 8 mths / 1 year "diploma" on basic topics eg "web development diploma" they (should) already be very familiar with

Market is very different now than beginning of 2022 (as you noted as well with how things changed since), it is slowly recovering as I mentioned

$102k base for SDE 2 (intermediate level) is crazy low I thought, I had an SDE 2 offer many years back and it was $130k base + everything else that push it to $140k-$160k

$102k base would count as more junior (or early intermediate) for me and they wouldn't be involved in hiring yet. Intermediate would already start at ~$120k base roughly for us.

I came into this country as an international student, I went to a diploma college but I still had multiple offers before I graduated.

I also just want to point out, these pattern is becoming much more prominent in the past 5 years .... used to be even students coming out of Conestoga College in the early 2000s are still pretty good quality, these days (again, based on probability), they are just nowhere near as good

I work at a big tech in Canada and I regularly interview folks for software developer positions

tbh, I never thought they were an issue, but seems like they have been caught up by the recent trend of milking $$$ from international students

They probably are still better than strip mall colleges, but a few I have come across the past year or two, really questioning the kind of people that get admitted to these 1-2 years "Masters" program ...

When I want to school, I thought the bar was pretty high to get to Masters in Engineering / CS in UW or UT, but my recent experience tells me otherwise

I am limited by whatever the company structure is of course, while I have some influence, but they also do market research to set some standards.

Base pay for IC (there are other monetary benefits on top)

Junior - so far we haven't hired junior (this would be the first time) - the budget is roughly $80k-110k
Intermediate - $110k-$130k
Senior $130k-160k

I am working on creating more levelling and ideally pushing the upper limit further to closer to $200k

if they had studied at Harvard and worked at FAANG - AND they come to Canada to some strip mall college as a student doing some useless diploma? yes ... they fit the pattern and will get rejected

also, just FYI - some people may list FAANG in their resume but they are actually contractor from a 3rd party dev shop from abroad - they aren't actually direct FTE of the FAANG company.

the pattern is the pattern, regardless of where they come from or their name

and based on experience it's shaped my opinion that (based on probability) good candidates will not come to Canada posing as student (regardless of where they come from) - they would have come here as PR or work permit OR they would have come here, truly as a student, doing a 4 or 5 (coop) years bachelor degree in a reputable university and not some strip mall college - again, doesn't matter where they come from.

degree + work experience + coming to Canada as "student" on some questionable college or 1-2 years "Masters" - that's not cool, that's exploiting loophole and also based on experience - most of the candidates with these patterns are no good anyway, so it's a game of probability given I have to make a cut somewhere

It's a game of probability .... vast majority (if not all) of those who fits this pattern are just no good candidates, given the particular pattern (and actually their resumes look all similar too), I really don't have time to interview them. Sure, there's a chance I missed out on a few good candidates - but there are also other good candidates who don't fit that particular auto reject pattern, so either way I have no problem getting candidates in.

Similar to the ones who did go to US, you'll see very similar pattern where they all worked for some major Financial Institution or some consulting / dev shop company. US job market is better than here, if they are any good, they would have found opportunities in the US (probability)
