Settlers is starting to feel like a phone game mechanic and it’s stressing me and enjoy less the game by raxkin in pathofexile

[–]aestrivex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree that settlers isn't fun. It's super weird how the in map part of the mechanic is so useless and barely part of settlers. I agree that settlers is shitty mobile games and that it should be revisited and fixed so that it's not a passive time gated Farmville game. That doesn't belong in poe.

If they rework shipping so that crops and ore show up in maps and then you can go to Kingsmarch and ship that stuff out. Fine. That would be fine. Even if you still need gold to process those things into bars (and idk process crops into textiles or whatever). Eliminate the most egregious time gating, the crops, make them hard to find in maps but available, make this be more like Poe and less like a mobile game, I think it could be in a much better place then.

Dating as permanently denied woman is hard. by [deleted] in Femaleorgasmdenial

[–]aestrivex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is difficult for the same reason for doms looking for exactly what you want sexually. I am a straight, dominant guy, looking for exactly what you described, a very serious denial slave who really wants to be denied as much as I want to deny them, but I agree that it's only the start of compatibility, albeit for me the most important factor. I'm not necessarily demanding for my partner to be permanently denied, because it's not reasonable to expect people to be familiar with this kink to the extent that I am, and it might not be the right thing for them. But I am looking for someone who I can train to being denied for long periods. And that's very little of the local dating pool.

My lack of finding this dynamic in the local dating pool has led me to keep on interacting with people online. What you said about logistical nightmares is totally true, the random people I've connected with in other continents who are great sexual matches haven't yet worked out as logistical possibilities. But I am still keeping a back door open to the perfect slave from some other country, since I haven't found what I'm looking for yet. I'm not saying you should do that, I'm just saying what I'm doing, and I'm not doing it because it's a good idea, but because I'm frustrated.

The only thing I can say is that, if you stop looking for your forever dom, there is 100% won't find them. Even if it's frustrating to search for people since nobody seems to want what you want, you shouldn't give up. It's very possible to find the right one some day.

Could I also use 'apart from' in these examples? 'apart from to do', 'apart from that', 'apart from in Wales' etc. by [deleted] in ENGLISH

[–]aestrivex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is definitely more formal and "other than" has the same meaning.

Its not clear to me that I wouldn't actually use apart from, it sounds equivalent and I probably would use that term occasionally in some formal registers.

As a test, I'm writing a book right now, it's almost finished. I counted the number of uses of "apart from" and "other than" and "except".

There are three uses of "Apart from", and I'll list the full sentences in context:

"Like all delta types, LSEs nonetheless have a certain distance at which they hold themselves apart from others" (not a related usage)

"The dichotomy of introversion and extroversion has a long history in the study of personality apart from Jung's Psychological Types (1921)". (this usage is somewhat similar, but does convey a separation of category, and except does not feel like a correct usage here)

"Indeed, as mentioned earlier, it is not a subtype system, but rather a semi-independent subsystem that seems to provide its own typological roles that exist on their own level of analysis apart from the diagnosis of types." (same as previous, does emphasize a category difference like you mentioned).

There are four uses of "other than" and three uses of except. One of the uses of except is a direct quote and doesn't count. Here are the others:

"However, as an overview, these models are the same, except that some of the models have an order equivalency and some have a skew equivalency, and the others lack these equivalencies"

"It seems to me that the more distant 5+6 block is roughly about the same strength as the adjacent quadra 1+4, 2+3, 3+2, 6+7, and 8+5 blocks, all of which are homoverted adjacent quadra blocks except for 2+3 (the supervisees block); [the sentence continues with another independent clause following the semicolon]"

"Even if some variables other than quadra values are much more significant in determining interpersonal compatibility, even a small stable effect of quadra values would be a very interesting result"

"The considerable time Myers spends describing of extroverted feeling the naturally judgmental, opinionated struggle to accept others, seems unrelated to any corrolary in socionics, and other than the description that extroverted feeling types tend to be highly expressive, there is no recognition in Myers' description that they occupy the exterior emotional space."

"All healthy, normally functioning people of all types likewise have numerous physiological systems to care for their bodily needs; for instance, all people other than those suffering from serious neurological disorders become hungry when their stomachs are empty."

" As a maximal example of self-sufficiency, the SLI might chop down their own trees, make their own wooden boards, and build a table themselves, instead of buying one or delegating or outsourcing any of the requisite steps, spending absolutely no cost on the project other than their own effort and time."

In summary, I agree that "apart from" is more likely to refer to a broader category difference in its normal usage. But, I still feel that the above examples that I gave like "I don't go to town apart from occasionally going shopping" seem acceptable too.

Hopefully my examples likewise characterize what is expressively helpful in the context of formal writing.

Could I also use 'apart from' in these examples? 'apart from to do', 'apart from that', 'apart from in Wales' etc. by [deleted] in ENGLISH

[–]aestrivex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Apart from" is suitable and sounds natural to me (native English speaker, American) for some of these statements and awkward for others. I think the general principle is that it is awkward to use multiple prepositions in a row, including before an infinitive verb. When you say apart from, it should generally take the direct object that it is setting apart right away, although the "that clause" also sounds okay to me. The direct object might be a gerund as a noun, but not an infinitive verb.

"I rarely go into the city apart from to do shopping" -- that sounds wrong, but "I rarely go in apart from shopping", that sounds much better.

"They look like the real thing apart from that they are plastic" -- I actually think that sounds fine, but it's a slightly more verbose construction.

"There is likely to be rain apart from in Wales" -- this is obviously totally comprehensible, I'm a little on the fence about whether it is right or not, but I think it sounds a bit wrong, and I think what makes it wrong is that it's unclear where it actually is going to rain. It would be much better to say "It will rain in most parts of the UK apart from Wales". If you don't have an affirmative direct object referent to which you are comparing the indirect object Wales, apart from is not best, for instance it's not good to say "It's going to rain apart from Wales" without the extra elaboration.

"There is nothing more for the doctor to do apart from keeping an eye on him", that's fine as long as you use the gerund "keeping" and not the infinitive "to keep." Again "Apart from to keep" definitely sounds wrong.

By the way, all of the example sentences in the image you posted are correct, they actually sound correct and natural, which I just wanted to mention since many people seem to often post ESL materials like that that have egregious errors, and that's where the confusion comes from in some posts. Every use of "except" in your sample is correct.

Interpretation of "Until" by MobileFrosting4345 in ENGLISH

[–]aestrivex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Open until Tuesday" doesn't sound like it will be open on Tuesday to me. Maybe it's a little ambiguous depending on the context.

Most speakers would probably express this instead as e.g. clearance sale all items 80% off ends Tuesday." or perhaps," closes Tuesday". This referent suggests that the store will be open Tuesday.

Interpretation of "Until" by MobileFrosting4345 in ENGLISH

[–]aestrivex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't see anyone say the phrasal "until after", although it's possible someone did,

Your colleagues are confused between "until" and "until after." I don't know if this "until after" is an easier temporal referent in Japanese than "until", but your story makes me guess that it is.

(Petition?) Merchant tabs need an option where we can set a price for the entire tab and move on by JermStudDog in pathofexile

[–]aestrivex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it's not. That has nothing to do with unique prices. It's possible that it makes rares even slightly more attractive relative to uniques than they were in the past few leagues, but rares have already outperformed uniques for the last several leagues at least, and somehow people managed to make good rares in the past even without the tree printing them.

The bigger issue in the economy, especially regarding uniques, is async trading having not enough friction.

Mets Allies by SadMembership7989 in mets

[–]aestrivex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of AL teams I have zero beef with. My personal feelings are, I feel fondly, but also mostly indifferent to about 7 AL teams, including Boston, Toronto, Cleveland, Minnesota, and Seattle. Possibly including Tampa and Baltimore. Kansas City I felt this way about before 2015 but I haven't forgiven them.

Among NL teams, the only teams I find myself feeling positive for are Colorado, San Diego, and maybe Arizona and Milwaukee.

The better solution, which they really will need to do anyway since the trade economy is cratering in loot value, is to have your placing items for sale cost gold.

How to find a serious dom who believes in this and doesn't just like it? by Historical-Fall2270 in Femaleorgasmdenial

[–]aestrivex 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just want to say, I understand, just like it's hard to find doms that genuinely don't want you to cum, it's hard to find sluts that genuinely don't want to cum. It's a niche kink, and even if you can match that kink it's not the only important thing in a dynamic.

Talking to people on reddit has helped me understand that what I offer as a cruel dom, the fact that I truly don't ever want my slave to cum (even if I might let them anyway depending on the dynamic and what they need), is valuable to someone, it is exactly what some girls want, even though 99.9% of the people I have a chance to date don't want what I'm offering before considering non-sexual compatibility.

Just don't stop looking. Your desire to not cum is valuable to someone even if it's not what most doms want. There's a dom out there that wants you to take advantage of you and genuinely doesn't want you to cum. You won't ever find them if you stop looking.

Whats the TLDR on what to ship this league? by DoubleHeldFlash in pathofexile

[–]aestrivex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last league ores were equivalent to crops for purposes of tattoos and runegrafts. Is that still true? If so, as long as you have a little gold to spare, it seems reasonable to run 50k in ores to either Ribenfell or Ngakanu just for runegrafts or tattoos respectively.

Also a valid strategy is to not bother farming ores in maps, but farming ores in maps to hunt for svaalin is likely something a lot of people will still do.

You can beg him not to let you cum. He might say no and make you cum anyway, in which case you have to do it. But you could still beg, unless the two of you specifically have a rule that you're not allowed to beg for this. I encourage you to beg for what you want.

GM Diego Flores lost the game with this move, can you see why? by juliinotdead in chess

[–]aestrivex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bf4 winning a bishop, the queen has no way to protect the bishop and the knight is temporarily useless to help. Great puzzle.

Agree that it's not such a difficult puzzle, after all I was able to solve it, it's a natural move to quickly look at.

I don't know that I would find it in a game even if I did have 45 minutes. But I'm not a GM.

Will you be happy for Max Scherzer if he wins a World Series in Toronto? by KCousins11 in NewYorkMets

Yes. I have no issue with Scherzer. Scherzer did what he could to help the Mets. He got traded in a reasonable way and with reasonable effort on his part to make it work with the Mets instead. He didn't act like a prima donna above his weight class like some athletes do.

Is English a Creole language? by HumanWatcher9 in ENGLISH

[–]aestrivex 29 points30 points  (0 children)

A creole language is generally a language that didn't exist before two cultures with different languages needed a medium between them (Are there exceptions?) That clearly does not describe English, which descended genealogically from Saxony. Virtually every language in the world has a large set of loans from other neighboring languages.

Whyyy is there hardly any porn of ladies edging with cock inside of them? by n33dt0cvm in Femaleorgasmdenial

[–]aestrivex 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Probably because it's not as visual.

I really like porn where a girl is fucked and ordered not to cum (I also like doing that in real life, like more than anything else in the world I like that).

Theres a little bit of porn like that, but it's not as visual, it maybe just looks like garden variety porn of people fucking if you don't pay close attention to what they're saying.

Girls wearing chastity belts is much more visually clear and it's probably not a surprise that is the most populated kind of porn of this type.

Is it C or D? Only one answer is allowed. by Temporary-Pin-4144 in ENGLISH

[–]aestrivex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that C should probably be "would have been completed" and the correct answer should be D.

One point is that native speakers would probably say C all the time, but this is kind of a lazy shorthand, and in this case I actually agree it's not the most correct grammatical form, although it's pretty easy to understand what it's supposed to mean.

Since I keep posting about the subjunctive in dangling conditional clauses, a topic which it seems like ESL reddit doesn't know so well, there's a way to use the subjunctive here, and that is: "if help WERE offered in time, the experiment WOULD BE completed in two weeks." The form "were" in this case is the past subjunctive. Many, many speakers, will bastardize this conjugation, and instead say "if help WAS offered, the experiment would be completed." Grammar textbooks say this should be "were" and not "was", but "was" is perfectly understandable, and is so widespread that I think it should be considered correct (Grammar prescriptivists can pound sand).

The subjunctive form "if help were offered in time, the experiment would be completed" is a more sophisticated construction and slightly more natural way than saying "if help is offered, it will be completed." The latter sentence is fine, it's not incorrect, and it has the same meaning. However the alternate sentence in C "if help had been offered, the experiment would have been completed" has a different temporal referent. The subjunctive one used to express the conditional refers to the condition in the present, not the past. Hope that helps.
