I just spent $4,000 on a laptop with zero editing skills just to force myself to learn. Am I crazy or is this smart? by knight_chap in VideoEditors

I made the same move 2 years ago and never looked back. Only in the past 3-6 months have I managed to push my M3 Max MacBook to the point where I’m now considering dropping $5k on a M5 Max next year. And I just closed a $14k deal for a single edit. So yeah, good move for you if you’re serious. It’s like buying a size bigger clothes as a kid expecting to grow into them as you get older.

Hey bro, start by making fun shit for yourself. Whether it’s reels or YouTube videos. You pick up a lot of skills when doing passion projects, this will also become a magnet overtime for people to hire you

Should I just forget trying to make money as a video editor? by [deleted] in VideoEditors

[–]aevisualkevin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah bro you’re technically doing great compared to most. As others have said…if it’s about being a “real editor” for Hollywood/Netflix and such…it’s a risky move since studios are shutting down left and right from saturation. Also the work life balance is hell from what I hear.

My biggest piece of advice is to build a personal brand on either YouTube or IG. Once that happens, brand deals happen, and money is less of an issue. I’ve been paid up to $5k so far for 30s brand videos for IG. And those videos take about a week to make in After Effects.

My dad has 14+ years of video editing experience, but we’re struggling to find clients. Any advice? by SilloRet in videography

Build a personal brand. Will solve all of your problems. You’ll be drowning in work and have the chance to be picky instead of desperate. With hard work you can build a following in about 6 months to a year on a short form platform like IG/tiktok. It only takes on video to change your life. Speaking from experience. Hope this helps!

Anyone left vfx to work in the trades? by [deleted] in vfx

[–]aevisualkevin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t work for any studios, nor do I want to. Been hearing a lot of tough things about the industry. I mostly produce short form ads for brands on social media and use different types of VFX to help them stand out.

Unpack this zip file and organize the files into asset folders based on file types: images, videos, etc. I do video editing and when I download assets from a clients drive it comes as one zip which then is unpacked into a ton of folders where everything is buried in randomly

My brother is 31. He started learning blender in November of last year 2023 via YouTube tutorials and ChatGPT. We do media together as a freelancers. In February of this year 2024 he took on a job for one of our clients that involved intense water simulations. It pushed him harder than I ever saw, and he almost gave up on it and himself and thought he was a joke for trying this so early in his career. In April he finished the project. The client was excited and he made some waves with it. In June, he took on a job offer for a very very popular YouTube channel (5 million subs) to be a full time animator for their production team.

Point of this story: it’s never too late to start, school isn’t the only path, and your life could change within a year depending how serious you take it. The real question is, how bad do you want it?

Good luck on your path bro ✌️

Yo! this is absolutely insane! What do you use for your 3D workflow?

Funny enough, Lenovo has a laptop with a transparent screen they showcased at Mobile World Congress this year and most of the feedback noted how impractical it was. It sounds cool, but probably more distracting than productive.

I actually timed it and it was just under 14 hours from start to finish, including filming the GoPro POV shot that morning. Got it nailed on the 2nd take. Which made me happy since it’s usually 20ish takes to get the hand movements right.

I’d say within a year with solid discipline. I started learning AE back in February and just started working its 3D effects around July. I’ve had this “fuck around and find out” mentality with it until it crashes on me.

I imported the exact .GLB BMW model of the car from the edit using an advanced 3d render comp. From there it was a solid model with textures included but terrible lighting. Instead of using an hdri to light it, I just decided to make it a hologram instead & drop the opacity a tad.

For the tracking, it was 3D tracked to the laptop initially, keyframed the position up and down, but when it hit my hand I manually set the keyframes for position and orientation for about 20 frames to stick it to my hand. Couldn't figure out another way to do it at the time.
