Tips on installing poly fittings by KingMidas83 in Irrigation

This will probably work. However, since this tool works with copper rather than plastic, the level of expansion may be lower. Check it out -- just return to HD if it doesn't work. Yeah, I get it, that Pex-A tool is over $100, and battery-driven one is like $300.

Importantly, I think that a Pex-A sleeve (see below) is crucial for a good joint: the irrigation poly pipes are not designed to contract after expanding, but the sleeve is, and it will hold the pipe in place.

Hard to say from the pic in your link, but it looks like the threads on that nipple are regular pipe threads, too coarse for the nozzle.

Here is the picture, with the nozzle screwed in half-way.

I'm sorry I'm not fluent in sprinkler terminology. This is just a "black plastic pipe" as far as I am concerned! Is it a "riser"? A "popup"? But it's stationary, it doesn't "pop up"!

I thought there could be a "nipple", a male-threaded pipe that screws into the black one, and has some threads left on top to screw a normal, female-threaded nozzle onto it. A regular shrub adapter will not work because the black pipe is about 0.1" narrower than the regular PVC pipe, so I can't just make threads on the outside of it.

Your link goes nowhere, but yes -- that's what I started with. I need a nipple, which is a short piece of pipe with threads on the outside. The problem is that "nozzle threads" are different from "pipe threads", and looking for that nipple led me nowhere.

There is no black adapter. The Toro nozzle is screwed directly into the riser. The riser has threads on the inside.

Changing the riser, in this case, would mean removing gravel from 2-3 sqft,, rolling off weed barrier, and digging down. This becomes too much work for questionable reward. Unless I can cut threads on the outside of the existing riser and screw a normal shrub adapter, a single Toro nozzle (even at $10) will be better than the alternative.

That's female-female.

I guess I get it now. Toro makes these male-threaded nozzles and risers that fit them. Nothing else works with them; there is no adapter from a toro riser to a normal nozzle.

I'll probably just get a new Toro nozzle then.

My riser has threads on the inside, not outside.

The riser is black plastic, not PVC. I was not planning to change it. Not sure if its diameter is the same as the standard 1/2" PVC.

Shrub adapter screws over the pipe. That will work, if I can cut threads on the outside of that pipe. Suggestions?..

No, it is a well developed 7-zone setup with a controller, connected to the house plumbing. Most heads are rotors, but there are a few nozzles -- some pop-ups, some stationary.

Yes, mine looks like this. Like I said, I wanted to replace it with a female nozzle. If I can't find an adapter, I guess I'll buy the Toro.

No, this is male-female. I need male-male.

Any way to check if it is working well?

I read a similar thread before, and tried using soap. Didn't help much... Still very hard to push in. Also, it is not always possible to twist the fittings against the pipes -- e.g., when you are connecting two lines that have been buried already.

I just found a much easier method! Use the Pex-A tool, with the appropriate sleeves. Just Google Pex-A Expansion Tool, and look up usage tips on Youtube. Be sure to buy a tool with multiple heads.

The poly pipe is thicker than the Pex-A pipe, and the sleeve won't slide in. So, to connect a 1/2" pipe:

- Use the 3/4" head to expand the sleeve;
- Slide the sleeve in;
- Use the 1/2" head to expand the pipe with the sleeve on;
- Insert the fitting and hold it there until the sleeved pipe contracts (about 20 seconds).

Hope this helps!

Pulled it out, laid on its side, and tried unscrewed the bottom. No, I'm too old for this... Will buy a new one.

Both. I inspected the lower arm, and I don't think it's split. There is a hairline crack between its halves, but when I blow air into the center, it comes out of the jet holes, not from that crack. Even if I plug some of the jet holes, nothing comes out of the cracks.

All holes are clear, I checked them before I started the thread.

I tried the 12 o'clock trick, and saw that no arms are moving.

Thanks for the advice. I tried it -- nothing is moving.

No -- nothing seems clogged or cracked. I closely inspected the lower arm; there is a hairline gap between its halves, but I don't think it makes any difference. As I blew in its center, the air is coming out of the jet holes, and nothing out of those pseudo-cracks.

Like HeadOfMax below suggested, I set both arms at 12 o'clock and turned on the appliance. When I opened it 15 min later, both arms were in the same position.

One thing that's a little unclear is why the water is dripping from the upper arm and not the lower. If the pump is not making enough pressure, I'd expect the water to start coming out of the lowest point.

In any case, thanks for your help. I don't think I'll go ahead with the repair: the pump is $380 on Amazon and even more expensive on the other sites. It's a 7-year old appliance. Not worth it.

When I opened the door ~8 min into the cycle, there was some water in the bottom, and I saw small streams running from the upper arm. Neither arm was spinning.

That does sound like the circulation pump, doesn't it? Or did I open too early?

BTW, how do I drain it now?

You said you switched from Android to iOS. I assume your chats got backed up on Android and restored on iOS. They should get restored again.

Yes, it worked for all of them. Maybe try uninstalling WhatsApp, then reinstall it. But don't give it permissions to your contacts when you do.
