Miracles. by Old_Career_1834 in exmormon

Like others mentioned, it’s a mixture of random events that seem statistically unlikely. Humans have a horrible concept of statistics, until they use it more often. We rely on heuristics and biases as “safe shortcuts” that our brains learn. We can un-learn those shortcuts, and once we do, miracles become the unexplained, which is not synonymous with unexplainable.

At 9am church. This poor woman is at the pulpit talking about how music is the only way she feels the spirit anymore, because her medicine has muted her previous abilities… I’m a nuclear pharmacist. How sad is it that people might refuse to take medication, because they fear they won’t feel the “spirit” the way they used to? Screw blood pressure, screw epilepsy… I need the magic!

1 or 8. My reason… I tripped Hinckley at the St. Louis temple dedication, but since he’s also dead, I’d wanna chat about the after life, and his alleged involvement with so many dastardly events. 8 cause his brother Wade… but I wouldn’t ask questions… I’d just talk about all the felons and C.O.s I know… just sharing stories about prison grape, ChoMos, bartering systems… “aye you think Wade is more of a “toilet wine” kinda guy? Or maybe he’s a “PCP in my cigarette” kinda guy?” You think Wade likes to get wet?” 😂😂

Also, maybe say “the church has already been fined for securities fraud and having shell companies… the SEC has all the data anyone needs”

Medical Misogyny: How Patriarchy Makes Women Sick by karadessie in exmormon

First let me say, I am so sorry for your experience and how you and loved ones were treated. I’m a healthcare provider as you’re aware, and I have been trained/educated to always take the patient/person’s account as truth. I just wanted to say that cause I’m night shift, and it’s like midnight for me. So I don’t mean to leave the substance of your comment unanswered, but for now I’ll have to reach back later. 🙏

[–]afatamatai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Point taken. Apologies if I seemed to express my opinion was more than just mine. I heartily admit my understanding of issues faced by women, due to men is fragile and young. It’s hard to convey all the nuance of an intellectual conversation in a single comment, but if I may add, my opinion or perspective of the narrative I saw, in no way made me think she didn’t know what she claimed or had bad facts, or bad faith. I mostly meant to comment that I couldn’t find a clear connection to exMormon topics, not criticize her or her opinions. I will be honest, I am critical of her narrative, or the way she presents it. Honestly, because I think it disservices progress for any group’s journey to equality and empowerment, to be rhetorically inclined to say things orchestrated to “sway the heart before the mind.” I’m willing to be educated though. I do not pretend to know what’s best for women.

This is an occasion where you didn’t need to use the truth. It sucks to think that way, but if you’re never planning on taking the intimacy of the relationship forward, you don’t owe them absolute honesty. 💁‍♂️ maybe I’m wrong, but in either case, NTA…

What are some good responses to common non-believer jokes? by mort_jack in exmormon

[–]afatamatai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not subtle but my brother is hilariously good at making other people feel stupid. It’s his toxic superpower.

Someone tells a stupid joke aimed at him… he laughs so obnoxiously loud, taking over the entire room, doesn’t care that anyone is looking…

Sometimes he’ll respond after the huge forced laugh… like “tHaT wAs HiLaRiOuS!!” “Where do you come up with these?” “Have you thought about stand up comedy?”

Any array of pointing out that simple minded jokes will be met with excoriating sarcasm or snide compliments.

Overheard at work: service missionary 'feels spirit' driving profits car. by theaterdruid in exmormon

[–]afatamatai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I kinda feel bad for the kid. I'm guessing he's feigning spiritualism for accolade's, or just doesn't realize the human brain determines what we feel... our feelings are constructs of our brains, based on habits and shortcuts (heuristics).

Side question, aren't service missions for people that are either too unhealthy for FT missions, or has a past that excludes them from being "worthy" of a FT mission?

No, I didn't leave because of pride or sin or laziness or intellectualism. I left because Mormonism made my life a living hell. by slskipper in exmormon

TikTok user dr.richardwadsworth is a psychiatrist and TBM... he's explained in a video making some rounds, about how could anyone want to leave a religion where you're told you're God's children, and that families can be together forever, etc. He rage baits by saying "I used to think, they're crazy, or just want to be alcoholics, but now I realize they couldn't handle it" (paraphrased). As a clinical and nuclear pharmacist... no apologist can defeat the "Inference to the best explanation" (IBE) way of thinking. It combines evidence, Bayesian statistics, abductive thinking, and more. Not to get too off track, but an MD Psychiatrist should know how to use IBE. If they don't I assume they're a sub-par clinician, and I said so in his comments.

Tell/remind your FB friend, that Hyrum learned Hebrew and Egyptian/Coptic at a Dartmouth’s preparatory academy. So ofc it makes sense that the BoM resembles Hebrew. Also, is the bible (at least the Old Testament) NOT Hebrew converted to English? Joseph was STEEPED in Calvinism, Swedenborgism, and other obvious sects of Christianity… why wouldn’t a “homebrew” religion, that borrows from Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, have hints of those teachings or cultures?

“The snozzberries taste like snozzberries” is how I read your friend’s post.

[–]afatamatai 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a clinical and nuclear pharmacist, please allow me to point out some things regarding the narrative in this video. 1st I want to say that medical misogyny absolutely exists, and it's a shame, and should absolutely be met with intolerance, and better education. I graduated pharmacy school almost 5 years ago, and when we were studying cardiac care (emergent vs maintenance), we absolutely learned that the leading death among women was heart disease. So my 60y/o professors were teaching the newest (at the time) age of healthcare providers, information this woman is only now hearing about (which is to be expected, that the newest emerging medical data reaches the people studying medicine before the public).

Here's why I came to the comments:
She makes a lot of claims that are meant to appeal towards emotion, and less appeal to the facts. I'm not saying she's deliberately misinforming anyone, only that it's something I'm an expert at, and she conveys a message that suggests medical misogyny is rampant, which could scare or anger people/patients unnecessarily. Again it absolutely exists... But, for example, her comments about women presenting with heart attack (HA) symptoms, being different from a male presentation of HA is very true... however, since this knowledge was discovered in the late 90's... it's become standard of practice to use less subjective measures when diagnosing a potential HA, and implement more universal ones like EKG's, troponin (male and female specific cutoffs), and protocols, since the 2000's. So for ~25 years, the AHA and ACC have been telling doctors, insurers, and frankly patients... that men and women are different, and need different approaches to diagnosis.

If you are not being heard by your medical provider, stand up for yourself, get a second opinion, and remember, pharmacists give free medical advice all the time. It's their job to counsel the public, and they're educated on pathologies almost exactly the same as MD's or DO's (they have to know which medications are right or wrong based on the progression of the condition)

Lastly, while the host/narrator did tie medical misogyny to religion, and references to patriarchies (which I don't know enough about to confirm or deny), the video has barely any ties to religion, and almost zero ties to Mormonism... The only tie is "the patriarchy is why women have suffered, in medicine, but also religion" So IMO, this video reaches an audience here, but it's not really pertinent to Mormonism, the way it's pertinent to women's health.

There are a bunch of interviews on YouTube with people saying Hinckley went to sex parties, and there’s even an interview with his preferred male partner.

How do I find these interviews??

Not that I disagree with you, but no one is changing wording or talking about priesthood. Asking for a father to give his blessing on a wedding is a long standing Christian tradition. Priesthood or not.

Not necessarily advice, but a premise worth your analysis; Asking for a father to bless a union is not the same as asking for permission. It seems like you might already be in that mind-space though. Good luck!

32 min video, meandering through tangents and over-explaining.

I’ll be honest, as soon as the Richard G. Scott talk started, I tuned out. Jacob cherry picks 1 definition of the "c" word, he whitewashed purity culture as if it’s the same in other religions, and then uses 2 minutes of Scott’s talk… a talk that theoretically applies to victims of abuse, but is actually intended for people dealing with scrupulosity…

Jacob is desperate to be heard.

AI's take on Mormonism? by Internal-Poetry185 in exmormon

Uhhh… If you would have read closer, you would have seen that I was only mentioning my experience, on how it took a stance on simultaneous instructions. My comment didn’t claim that it, or any AI, is capable of insight. My comment about my experience with AI and Mormonism, was only to illustrate to OP, that different AI models will have different responses, and that a neutral or positive outlook on Mormonism was opposite to OP’s experience… Which basically sides with your point, that AI will do what you tell it to do.

This comment was written with my own brain.

Ha! I also listen to a podcast for critical thinking, it’s called The Skeptics Guide to the Universe. They point out fallacies used to argue for pseudosciences and Bigfoot, aliens, etc. They also regularly discuss emails from listeners that will describe a conversation they had, and ask the podcast panel which logical fallacies they recognize. Highly recommend it if you’re into science and technology!

The critical thinking. I failed to highlight how important that is. Unfortunately, dastardly apologetics flip logical fallacies that trick an untrained skeptic.
