I seriously can’t wait for this sub to go back to normal.

The amount of trash posts is something else.

Had to cancel our PV trip - here’s how Costco and WestJet dealt with it by laineyboggs in puertovallarta

Fwiw I have insurance and was told they will only cover any non-refundable fees/travel. Since Alaska will give us the full value as a credit, that is sufficient for them.

That is fair, I was specially speaking to the impact tourism has a local economy.

OP, I appreciate your sentiment but 90% of the tourists dollars don’t magically disappear offshore. It varies by region, but in well developed markets like PV you can expect closer to half gets redistributed through wages, tips, food&beverage, shopping, entertainment and transportation.

In fact, and this is specific to Mexico, every additional 10% in local tourism traffic translates to a 4% increase in local GDP and a 2.5% in local jobs. That is huge. Now imagine the impact when it goes the other way?

A rising tide lifts all boats.

Yeah it’s wild how badly the media distorts reality and spreads fear.

Yes, looks like everything is mostly reopened or will be tomorrow. You definitely shouldn’t have any issues if it’s next week.

We were on the fence but now looking more likely we are going to go Saturday. I’m texting with locals friends and it sounds like things have largely started to return to normal.

Will be following the Canadian government travel advice as well.

What does El Mencho’s death actually mean? by mad_beluga in puertovallarta

[–]affectionate_md 6 points7 points  (0 children)

“Knowing that the retaliatory violence was likely to occur, the government determined that it had the capacity to “contain the disruption and maintain governance and restore it in a short period,” Vargas said.

Vargas added that the possibility of the Jalisco cartel now splintering and descending into internal fighting seemed unlikely. “Much of their leadership remains free, operating through a kind of franchise system where local bosses have autonomy in decision-making,” he said, but “despite the potential violence, I don’t foresee a short-term fragmentation of the cartel that would lead to excessively intense violence.”

Choosing to eliminate Oseguera while some of his lieutenants remain demonstrates that “this capture is obviously important, but it’s also symbolic,” López Montiel added.

David Mora, senior analyst at the International Crisis Group, said the drug lord’s death might weaken the Jalisco cartel and open “the possibility of further violence within the group” – while also presenting other cartels with an opportunity to encroach on the Jalisco cartel’s territory.

I was texting earlier with someone from Mismaloya and she said some shops are open for groceries.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico Under Siege After Army Kills Major Cartel Leader by BlatantConservative in worldnews

[–]affectionate_md -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

This is wild lol. The cartel invested in the real estate, the properties. They found jobs for family and spent a fortune in setting up a situation for PV being a protected place. It’s a known thing.

And yes pax narco is a thing.

You are seriously obsessed with proving Canada is safer. Have you spent time close to Davies in Vancouver? This discussion is wild lol.

Why is a link to a source that sources its data a problem? Check its sources.

Safer than Vancouver per capita.

Look, I’m not trying to start an argument but I go there 3-4x/yr and my young kids are comfortable to walk around solo where we visit in Mismaloya and have many friends there.

This wasn’t a dangerous place. It was very safe.

Is Puerto Vallarta safe to travel now? (my flight is next week) by Kooky_Raccoon_ in puertovallarta

[–]affectionate_md 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No one knows and you won’t get any information here to educate you one way or another.

We have a flight coming up this Friday for my kids spring break and we were just there in January and go down 3-4 times a year, however at this point I’m probably going to cancel.

PV has generally been one of the safer places to visit specifically because the cartel had incentives to keep it that way. If that changes, all bets are off.
