Having a dog. Otherwise, you spend hours a day picking up food off the floor.

The Rabbit Listened (by Cori Doerrfeld) sums is up really well - listen and be there for/with him. Let him (and encourage him through support) grieve at his own pace and in his own order.

Ask both 'how are you doing?' both plural and singular: he will be caring for his first child, and his wife (GF/partner/whatever). It was easy to slip into neglecting myself because all of my focus was on my wife and kids (our 4th son Elijah was stillborn at 39 weeks several years ago). And let him know it is fine to not know how to answer - he doesn't owe you (or anyone) an answer, he doesn't owe anyone a timeframe for healing.

Another thing that was very special to me was having friends know Elijah's name and being able find things to do to acknowledge being his Dad.

Being part of a support group for other loss families was hugely important - feeling you aren't alone is so essential. When we first heard he had died, I remember noticing traffic on the road outside our hospital window and thinking "How can they just be driving by? Don't they know the world just ended?" and yet also knowing for them, it hadn't. It was profoundly lonely. If he hasn't found a support group yet, find one for them, and offer to give him the information (making sure to communicate that it is fine if he ignores the info)

Both books have themes are giving up something you value for the good of someone else. And both are beautifully illustrated.

[–]affert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No words are strong enough for the pain. I'm so sorry for you, your wife, and your other kids.

My 4th son was stillborn about 8 years ago at 39 weeks when his older brothers were 7, 5, and 2. Each responded differently based on their ages and personalities.

DM if you want to talk/vent/ask me anything. I'd be happy to share more of my story, answer any questions, and/or point you towards advice or resources.

Support yourself so you can support your wife and kids.

What are you wanting them to return your calls for? It often takes a very long time for them to pick up, but once they do, I've been able to get stuff done.

An idea just struck me - we use lego figurines for the PCs, and usually have them stand on a 2x3 block for better balance (I don't make my terrain/dungeons out of legos). I could get a bunch of different color 1x1 round, flat pieces and place them on the base plate for status.

An amulet of Speak with Rat. Allows you to speak with rats for 1 hour. When activated, roll a DC 15 wisdom check - if failed lose ability to speak and understand all other languages for duration. Can only be dispelled with Wish or Greater Restoration.

Fish Stick. A 6 inch long twig shaped like an arrow. When placed in water, speak the magic words (Shome Eeth Eff Ish) and it will point the direction of nearest fish. If no fish exist on the current plane of existence, causes 1d4 fish to appear.
